Pixel 8 Pro Review: Brilliant Camera, Flawed Flagship Strategy

I’ve been daily-driving the Pixel 8 Pro long enough to forget my SIM PIN twice, and one thing is obvious: this is the most confident Pixel Google has ever shipped, and also the most conflicted. It nails photography, nails the display, pushes software support further than anyone else, then stumbles on battery life and performance like it’s still learning how to be a flagship.

This is a phone built around Google’s priorities, not yours. Whether that’s a good deal depends on how much you care about cameras and software smarts versus raw speed and endurance.

Design: Familiar Visor, Flat Screen, Subtle Tweaks

If you’ve seen a Pixel 6 Pro or 7 Pro, you’ve basically seen the 8 Pro. Same visor, same glass-and-aluminum sandwich, same IP68 rating. The differences are in the details.

Google finally ditched the curved front glass for an almost entirely flat display. It still has slightly rounded edges for a smooth transition into the aluminum frame, but the era of exaggerated Pixel curves is over. Practically, that means better screen protector compatibility and fewer accidental edge touches.

The 8 Pro keeps Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both sides, adds slightly rounder corners, and a camera bar that sticks out a bit more than the 7 Pro. All three rear cameras now sit under a single glass window alongside the LED flash and the new temperature sensor.

You get the usual Obsidian plus Porcelain and Bay. Bay is the standout: a light but punchy blue that doesn’t look like anything else in the Android flagship crowd. The frosted back hides fingerprints but is slippery, while the glossy metal rails are surprisingly grippy, helped by the thicker frame allowed by that flat screen.

Button layout is still peak-Pixel weirdness: power above volume on the right side. If you’re coming from literally any other brand, your muscle memory will hate it for a week, then give up.

Display: “Super Actua” Lives Up to the Name

Google is calling this a Super Actua display, which sounds like something a marketing intern wrote at 4:58pm, but the panel itself is serious hardware.

You get a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED at 1344 x 2992 (489ppi), adaptive 1–120Hz, and HDR10/HDR10+ support. No Dolby Vision, but given how many Android flagships skip it, that’s not surprising.

In testing, the 8 Pro hit 1600 nits in adaptive mode—not the 2400 nits Google quotes, but still brighter than anything else they measured outside the iPhone 15 Pro (Max), and ahead of other Android flagships. Even more impressive: 954 nits in manual mode, around 100 nits higher than the Galaxy S23 Ultra and current Pro iPhones. On a sunny day, this thing is borderline overkill.

Color handling stays Pixel-simple: two modes, Adaptive and Natural, no sliders or white balance wheels. Adaptive pushes saturation and targets DCI-P3 with decent but not best-in-class accuracy; Natural is tuned excellently for sRGB and looks more restrained. There’s no real color cast or major shift in either mode, so the lack of temperature slider isn’t a big loss.

Refresh behavior is equally minimal in settings: one “Smooth display” toggle. On means 1–120Hz, off means capped at 60Hz, but still adaptive down to 1Hz. The phone happily drops to 1Hz on static content at normal brightness and sticks to 60Hz for video. Games that support high frame rates can use 120Hz.

HDR streaming works as expected: HDR10/HDR10+ from YouTube and Netflix (Full HD from Netflix). When HDR plays in a window, only that window gets the brightness boost, which is exactly how it should be. Photos can now show brighter highlights from supported images using extra luminance metadata—basically bringing an iPhone-style HDR photo viewing trick to Pixels.

Tensor G3: Better Than Before, Still Behind Everyone

Tensor G3 is supposed to be the brains behind Google’s AI-first hardware story. On paper, it’s a nona-core 4nm SoC (Samsung process) with a 1+4+4 CPU layout: one Cortex-X3 at 3.0GHz, four Cortex-A715 at 2.45GHz, and four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores also at 2.45GHz. Graphics are handled by an Immortalis-G715s MC10 GPU, with a dedicated NPU and a Titan M2 security chip onboard.

In practice, it’s an upgrade from Tensor G2 in every measurable way. CPU and GPU benchmarks are higher across the board, and the GPU jump is particularly noticeable. Day-to-day, the phone feels fast and fluid, and Android 14’s UI stays smooth.

But once you stop looking at it in isolation, the gap shows. Tensor G3 is outperformed by last year’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in most tests, and current rival flagships pull even further away. Google keeps saying Pixels aren’t about benchmarks, which is fine; gaming-heavy users will disagree.

Worse, sustained performance is where it really falls apart. Previous Pixels already struggled with throttling, and the 8 Pro somehow does even worse in long, sustained loads. The larger chassis barely helps cooling under stress. If your use pattern is browsing, social, light media, and camera use, you’ll never see the problem. If you push CPU/GPU continuously, this is not the Android flagship to buy.

All variants come with 12GB of RAM, which is appropriate. Storage starts at 128GB, which is frankly embarrassing for a thousand-dollar “Pro” device in 2023, even if 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB options exist. Google isn’t alone here—iPhone 15 Pro also starts at 128GB—but that doesn’t make it a good idea.

Battery, Charging, and Audio: Still Playing Catch-Up

Battery capacity creeps from 5000mAh to 5050mAh—literally a 1% bump over last year. Capacity parity with the Android pack doesn’t translate to endurance parity.

In testing, the Pixel 8 Pro posted 16:25h of Wi‑Fi web browsing and 19:33h of offline video. That’s better than the Pixel 7 Pro, but still behind the Galaxy S23 Ultra and significantly behind the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Standby and voice call numbers drag the overall endurance rating down to 90h. In real life, this is a solid full-day phone for most people, but not a two-day device, and it’s clearly behind its direct rivals.

Charging is no longer glacial, just slow. With Google’s 30W charger, a full charge takes 1:23h—almost half an hour quicker than the 7 Pro, but still beaten by the Galaxy S23 Ultra and only roughly comparable to an iPhone 15 Pro Max, which isn’t exactly a speed demon either. The 30-minute mark is improved vs last gen but still not competitive in the flagship space.

Wireless charging hits up to 23W on a Pixel Stand and up to 12W on standard Qi EPP pads. Oddly, there’s still no Wireless Power Consortium certification listed for the 8 series.

Speakers use the usual flagship stereo hybrid: bottom-firing main driver plus earpiece as the second channel. Loudness tests rate it as merely “Good,” below the Pixel 8, Pixel 7 Pro, and most competitors. The tuning, however, is strong—balanced tonality, some low-end thump, clear mids, and clean treble. An iPhone 15 Pro Max still has the edge, but audio quality is a plus, even if volume isn’t.

Android 14 and AI: Brilliant, Fragmented, and Region-Locked

If you’re buying a Pixel, you’re buying Google’s version of Android. The Pixel 8 Pro ships with Android 14 and a pile of exclusive features enabled by the NPU and Tensor G3.

Visually, Android 14 sticks very close to Android 13: same home screen, lock screen, quick toggles, recents, and app drawer. One small but useful change: the notification shade now shows active background apps, which is great for catching stealthy battery hogs.

Customization gets better. The lock screen finally offers different clock styles and configurable corner shortcuts. You can generate AI wallpapers by combining 12 base styles with text prompts and color choices. It’s not life-changing, but it’s fun and very on-brand for Google.

Android 14 also adds per-region language and formatting tweaks: you can, for example, use US as your region but still run the metric system and different date formats. Per-app language selection is supported too.

Under the hood, there are tweaks to background app management, foreground services, downloads, and broadcast handling aimed at efficiency, but don’t expect miracle battery gains. On the privacy side, apps targeting Android 5.1 or older no longer run, image permissions can be limited to selected photos instead of your entire gallery, and Android will prompt you again if an app quietly changes its privacy policy.

Audio nerds get system-level lossless audio over wired headphones and 10-bit HDR handling for images, preserving more dynamic range in supported apps.

Then there’s the AI stack. Live Translate can handle system-wide written translation in most apps and some live interpreter scenarios, though spoken language support is still limited. Interpreter mode can translate live conversations between two people and store transcripts for later translation.

Messaging benefits from auto-detect translation for incoming texts and style suggestions for outgoing replies. Call Screening gets smarter: Assistant can answer for you, understand context, suggest quick replies, and even navigate voice menus by transcribing options so you can tap instead of listening. It can also suggest calling at a different time if the business is busy.

The Recorder app now does real-time transcription with speaker labels, even with the phone in your pocket, and lets you search transcripts afterward. It automatically strips filler like “um” and “uh,” making notes more usable.

Across the system, a “Select” button in the recents menu lets you copy text or images from whatever app is on screen. Assistant can summarize articles in Chrome into bullet points, though that feature wasn’t available in all regions during testing.

Google Photos gains Magic Editor under the Edit menu. Beyond the usual object eraser and background blur, you can remove non-human objects, move them, change the sky, and generate multiple variations. There’s also video background noise removal that works surprisingly well in some cases.

The catch: region and language support is all over the place. A lot of the best features simply aren’t available in many countries. If the Pixel 8 Pro doesn’t officially sell in your region, assume the experience will be incomplete.

Camera Hardware and Pro Controls: Finally Acting Like a “Pro”

The Pixel 8 Pro keeps the same basic triple-lens layout as last year but improves the optics and ultrawide hardware.

Main camera is a 50MP 1/1.31″ sensor with 1.2µm pixels, binning to 12.5MP. The big change is the lens: now around f/1.68 (roughly f/1.7), brighter than last year’s f/1.85 (roughly f/1.9), with an 82-degree FoV (about 25mm equivalent) and OIS. Autofocus uses Octa-PD plus a multi-point laser system.

The ultrawide sees the biggest hardware jump: a new 48MP 1/2.0″ sensor with 0.8µm pixels, up from 12MP 1/2.55″ on the 7 Pro. It covers 126 degrees at f/2.2 and supports autofocus. This is a serious ultrawide upgrade, not a checkbox.

The telephoto keeps a 48MP 1/2.55″ sensor with 0.7µm pixels but changes lens specs: from 120mm equivalent f/3.5 to 113mm f/2.8, still with OIS. That shorter focal length plus brighter aperture improves low-light reach and sharpness.

Front-facing, you get a 10.5MP sensor (1/3.1″, 1.22µm) at f/2.2, 20mm equivalent, with autofocus—something the smaller Pixel 8 doesn’t get.

On the software side, the camera app now splits photo and video into separate main modes with dedicated sub-modes, and settings slide up from the bottom instead of down from the top. Both phones support RAW, but only the Pro lets you pick between 12MP and 50MP capture and force specific lenses, preventing automatic switching.

There’s also a Pro-style control set on the 8 Pro only: manual focus with focus peaking, shutter speed and ISO sliders, plus the existing RAW support. This finally gives Pixel users the control level photographers have wanted for years. But restricting these software features to the Pro model is classic Google gatekeeping.

Both Pixel 8 models can shoot in Display P3 color space after you enable it, and the camera records luminance metadata to create a pseudo-HDR effect when viewed in Google Photos on supported displays.

Image and Video Quality: Still the Android Camera to Beat

Daytime from the main camera is exactly what you expect from a Pixel—and slightly better. 12.5MP shots are sharp without overcooked detail, with low noise and consistent auto white balance. Google still prefers exposing for highlights with higher contrast, so shadows can run a touch darker than some competitors, but there’s a subtle shift towards brighter overall exposure this year.

Colors lean slightly cool with a bit of magenta, but saturation feels well-judged—neither flat nor cartoon. 50MP mode on the main camera can deliver extra detail in the right conditions without major penalties, which isn’t always the case on other brands.

2x shots, cropped from the main sensor, look good at normal viewing sizes, though pixel peeping shows some softness in complex scenes like foliage. The phone even offers 50MP at 2x, but those files look obviously upscaled and aren’t worth the storage hit.

The 5x telephoto is a real upgrade over the 7 Pro. Images are sharper with better micro-contrast and detail, while maintaining the same solid dynamic range and color tuning as the main camera. Again, full-res modes exist but don’t bring meaningful real-world gains.

The new ultrawide is excellent. Detail is a big step up, softness is minimal even near the corners, and colors/dynamic range match the main camera closely. It doubles as a great close-up and macro shooter, where it comfortably beats the smaller Pixel 8.

Low light is still a Pixel stronghold. With Night mode (auto or forced), the main camera balances highlights and shadow lift without going into fake daylight territory. White balance in mixed lighting is handled impressively well. Detail is high, though some fine textures get mistaken for noise and smoothed out.

Without Night mode, darker scenes can look underexposed; in decent light, the difference is smaller, but there’s almost no reason to disable it.

At 2x, Night mode again helps with detail and tonal range. The 5x telephoto surprisingly holds its own in the dark—focus hunting can be an issue in complex scenes with lots of depth, and bright points can show the usual telephoto streaking, but overall results are very usable for a long zoom at night.

The ultrawide also benefits heavily from Night mode, producing brighter shadows, better-preserved highlights, and more saturated colors. It’s noticeably better than the Pixel 8’s ultrawide in low light.

Portrait mode uses the main camera at 1.5x and 2x, with no 5x portrait option. 2x is the sweet spot: good detail on faces and generally solid separation, though edge detection around clothes and hair still isn’t flawless. 1.5x is softer and not worth using unless you absolutely need the wider framing.

Selfies at both 0.7x (native FoV) and 1x (cropped) are detailed with largely accurate skin tones, only faltering slightly in heavy backlight due to noise reduction. The autofocus doesn’t offer a huge benefit at arm’s length but helps with natural background blur.

Video tops out at 4K60 on all cameras, front and back, with h.264 or h.265 and optional 10-bit HDR up to 4K30. Stabilization is available in all modes.

Main camera video is excellent: detailed at all frame rates, with strong dynamic range, clean color, and reliable exposure. 2x video is clearly an upscale, but still usable at 4K, and better if you step down to 1080p.

5x telephoto video is a highlight—sharp at 24/30/60fps with good color and dynamic range. Ultrawide 4K is detailed and stable, but white balance can skew too warm and yellow in video, unlike stills.

Low-light video from the main camera remains strong, with good detail and color, and manageable ghosting around point light sources. The telephoto struggles more: focus hunting and optical artifacts are visible but still comparable to what most phones do at that focal length in the dark. Ultrawide night video tracks closely to an iPhone 15 Pro in detail, but loses out in dynamic range.

Stabilization overall is very good. Walking shake is well-controlled on main and ultrawide, and telephoto holds surprisingly steady. The main annoyance is an abrupt shift when you start panning on the main camera—something the ultrawide and tele don’t exhibit.

Seven Years of Support, a Thermometer, and the Competition Problem

Beyond the obvious specs, the Pixel 8 Pro has two big talking points: the 7-year update promise and the built-in thermometer.

Google says the Pixel 8 Pro (and 8) will get 7 years of major OS and security updates, plus spare parts availability for that same duration. That beats everyone, including Apple’s usual 5-year window. It’s a huge win for sustainability and long-term ownership—if Google actually follows through with timely, stable updates over that whole period.

The thermometer lives in the camera visor and measures object temperatures within about 5cm, after you manually select what you’re scanning in the app. Right now it’s only certified for objects, not people, though the app UI strongly hints at a future “person temperature” mode once regulators are satisfied. As it stands, it’s a novelty: occasionally useful, mostly a party trick.

On the whole software experience, the Pixel 8 Pro runs buttery smooth with excellent haptics and a noticeably faster, more accurate fingerprint reader than previous Pixels. The real downside is that many of the cleverest features are heavily region-locked.

Price is where things get messy. The Pixel 8 Pro now runs €1,100/$1,000. That drops it straight into Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro territory.

The S23 Ultra matches or beats it on battery life, offers the S Pen, and delivers a versatile camera system that many people already love. The iPhone 15 Pro (and especially the Pro Max) brings stronger video performance and significantly better endurance, offset by a higher price in some markets but not all.

Step away from the big three and the value picture gets even worse for Google. OnePlus 11 undercuts it by around €300/$300 while only really losing in long zoom and Google-exclusive software tricks. Xiaomi 13 Pro trades the Pixel’s style of computational photography for a 1-inch main sensor and unique telephoto behavior at roughly the same money. Sony’s Xperia 1 V offers near-“stock” Android with serious manual camera tools, a microSD slot, and a headphone jack.

Google has fixed a lot of the 7 Pro’s pain points—selfie reliability, ultrawide quality, and unacceptable charging speeds—but didn’t solve the two biggest: battery life that trails the competition and SoC performance that feels a generation behind in sustained loads.

On the flip side, the camera system is comfortably one of the best in the industry, the Super Actua display is among the brightest and most accurate you can buy, and seven years of support is a major step forward for Android as a platform.

If you’re a camera-first user who cares about Google’s software extras and plans to keep a phone for years, the Pixel 8 Pro finally feels like a complete, grown-up Pixel—just an expensive and slightly short-winded one.
