Google Pixel 8 Review: Small, Smart, and Still Compromised

Google just promised 7 years of OS and security updates for the Pixel 8 — more than any other phone maker, including Apple. That’s huge. The question is whether the hardware can actually go the distance.

Design: Finally a Truly Compact Pixel Flagship

The headline change this year is size. The Pixel 8 drops to a 6.2-inch display, continuing Google’s slow shrink from 6.4″ (Pixel 6) to 6.3″ (Pixel 7) and now this genuinely compact footprint. It’s about 5 mm shorter and 3 mm narrower than the Pixel 7, with slimmer bezels and rounder corners that make it noticeably easier to handle.

You still get the familiar camera bar on the back, slightly larger lens glass, and a bit more protrusion. The back is glossy Gorilla Glass Victus, and the front is Victus as well — not the newer Victus 2 that the Pixel 8 Pro gets. The aluminum frame is matte and a bit slippery, but the smaller footprint makes up for it in grip.

Ergonomically, Google basically nails it: IP68, premium materials, and a genuinely one-handable flagship in 2023. The only real design gripe is the materials downgrade versus the 8 Pro and the missing Victus 2, which feels like segmentation for the sake of it.

Display: Google Finally Joins the 120Hz Club

Google is late, but at least it showed up. The Pixel 8 jumps to a 6.2″ 120Hz OLED (non-LTPO) with HDR10+ support and up to a claimed 2,000 nits peak in HDR. In testing, it hits around 1,001 nits manually and up to 1,446 nits in auto high-brightness mode — a massive upgrade over previous vanilla Pixels.

Color accuracy is genuinely excellent. Even in the default mode the panel is very accurate; switch to the Natural preset and you’re down to an average dE2000 of 1.1, which is pro-grade territory. This is a phone you can trust for color-critical work more than most Android flagships.

The downside is the lack of LTPO. Refresh rate logic is basic: it runs at 120Hz whenever you’re interacting and drops to 60Hz when idle. Apps, menus, Chrome, and even YouTube’s UI all run at 120Hz while you’re touching the screen, then fall back to 60Hz during static video playback. It feels smooth, but it’s not as power-efficient or flexible as true LTPO behavior.

Tensor G3: Smarter, Yes. Faster or Cooler? Not Really.

Under the hood, the Pixel 8 moves to Google’s Tensor G3 on Samsung’s 4nm process, with a nona-core CPU: 1x Cortex-X3 at 3.0 GHz, 4x Cortex-A715 at 2.45 GHz, and 4x Cortex-A510 at 2.45 GHz, plus an Immortalis-G715s MC10 GPU. There’s also the Titan M2 security chip and an upgraded NPU to power all the AI tricks.

On paper, it’s a clear step up from Tensor G2. In reality, it mostly just beats last year’s Pixels. In CPU and GPU benchmarks, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro only consistently outrun the Pixel 7 series, while losing by a noticeable margin to phones running Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and above. Gaming is fine for non-enthusiasts, but this is not a performance flagship.

Thermals are the bigger concern. In a 60-minute stress test, the CPU starts throttling within minutes, holds around 80% of peak performance for only about 15 minutes, then drops toward 60–70% and never properly recovers. That’s worse sustained behavior than previous Pixels, which already had a reputation for heat.

Storage and memory are conservative for a 2023 flagship: 8GB RAM with either 128GB or 256GB, and no microSD. Realistically, a phone promising 7 years of updates should not be starting at 128GB, but here we are.

Battery and Charging: Bigger Cell, Worse Endurance

Battery capacity rises to 4,575 mAh, paired with 27W wired and 18W wireless charging. Wired charging is finally respectable by Pixel standards: 56% in 30 minutes and a full charge in about 1 hour 16 minutes, roughly 24 minutes faster than the Pixel 7. Against rivals, it’s slower than Xiaomi’s flagships but faster than an iPhone 15 and on par with a Galaxy S23.

Wireless charging actually gets worse: 18W vs 20W on the Pixel 7. That’s a strange regression on a phone Google expects you to keep for most of a decade. There’s no charger in the box, just a USB-C cable and USB-C–to–USB-A adapter.

Battery life is where the story gets weird. Overall endurance drops from 96 hours on the Pixel 7 to 83 hours on the Pixel 8, despite the larger battery and newer process. Screen-on metrics (web browsing and video) are solid and comparable to the Galaxy S23, but standby/screen-off tests are notably worse, dragging the total score down.

If you’re a heavy screen-on user, you’ll probably be fine — the active-use results are decent for a small flagship. But anyone expecting a big efficiency win from Tensor G3 is going to be disappointed.

Cameras: Stellar Output, Artificial Limitations

Hardware-wise, the main camera is familiar: a 50MP 1/1.31″ sensor with 1.2µm pixels, outputting 12.5MP binned shots, with OIS and an effectively brighter f/1.68 lens (up from f/1.85). There’s still no telephoto; the main sensor shoulders zoom duty up to 2x.

The ultrawide finally gets a meaningful upgrade. It moves to a 12MP unit with autofocus, a 126° field of view, and f/2.2 aperture — effectively the Pixel 7 Pro’s ultrawide. AF unlocks proper macro-style close-ups and better general sharpness, and it’s a clear improvement over the Pixel 7 as well as the ultrawides on the iPhone 15 and Galaxy S23.

The selfie camera is a 10.5MP, 1/3.1″ sensor with 1.22µm pixels and a 20mm-equivalent f/2.2 lens. The hardware matches the 8 Pro, but Google arbitrarily disables autofocus here, reserving AF for the Pro model.

In daylight, the main camera is excellent. Detail is high, noise is basically non-existent, and Google’s typical processing exposes for highlights, giving punchy contrast and slightly darker shadows. White balance leans a bit cool with a magenta tilt — classic Pixel — and saturation is pleasing without going cartoonish.

The 2x digital zoom looks surprisingly good most of the time, although fine textures like foliage can get fizzy at 1:1. It’s still one of the better 2x crops from a non-telephoto sensor. The ultrawide produces detailed, tonally consistent shots that actually beat the iPhone 15 and Galaxy S23 ultrawides in many daylight scenarios.

Low light is where the Pixel 8 flexes. With Night mode, the main camera balances highlight protection and shadow visibility extremely well, with accurate white balance across mixed light sources. Detail is generally strong, though some surfaces (like asphalt) can get over-smoothed when the algorithm mistakes texture for noise.

At 2x in the dark, Night mode again helps with dynamic range and shadow detail. Without Night mode, results quickly become dim and gloomy. The ultrawide at night is the weak link: exposures and colors look decent with Night mode, but pixel-level detail is soft, and turning Night mode off just makes things worse.

Portrait mode at 1.5x and 2x relies on the main camera. Subject detail is fine at 2x in good light, but edge detection is more inconsistent than competitors. Selfies are good at the wider FoV (0.7x), with solid detail at arm’s length, though backlit and dim scenes can soften things up. The tighter 1x crop is noticeably softer but usable.

Video tops out at 4K60 on all cameras, including the selfie. You get 24/30/60fps options and 10-bit HDR up to 4K30, with h.264 or h.265 codecs and stabilization available in all modes. Main-camera footage in daylight is very good: sharp detail, wide dynamic range, accurate white balance, and natural colors.

At 2x, video sharpness drops and the upscaling becomes obvious; if you care about quality, you might as well shoot 1080p or stick to 1x. The ultrawide’s video is fine from a distance but lacks detail close-up and falls apart in low light with softness and reduced saturation. The main camera holds up nicely at night, though you’ll see some ghosting from bright point sources.

Stabilization is strong for walking shots or static framing, but more aggressive movement may still favor an iPhone. Overall, this is a very capable camera system that’s held back more by segmentation than by hardware limits.

Software and AI: Brilliant Features, Patchy Availability

The Pixel 8 ships with Android 14 and Google’s usual Pixel flavor of “pure” Android plus exclusive tricks. Visually, it’s close to Android 13: same lock screen, launcher, notification shade, quick toggles, recents, and app drawer. One useful tweak is a background-app list in the notification shade to help catch battery hogs.

Customization steps up: the lock screen now supports multiple clock styles and customizable corner shortcuts. Generative AI wallpapers let you pick from 12 base styles and then mix prompts and colors into unique backdrops.

On the language side, Android 14 lets you mix regional settings — for example, keeping US as your region while using European measurement and date formats. You can also assign per-app languages. Under the hood, Google tweaks app background management, foreground services, downloads, and broadcast behavior to squeeze efficiency, but the improvements are subtle in real-world use.

Privacy continues to tighten. Apps targeting Android 5.1 or older simply won’t run anymore. When you share photos, you can now grant access to only selected images instead of your whole gallery. If an app changes its privacy policy, Android 14 will prompt you to re-confirm permissions.

Media gets some nerd-friendly upgrades too: lossless audio over wired headphones and 10-bit HDR image handling so JPGs can preserve more sensor data where supported.

The upgraded NPU powers Live Translate across most apps for written text, though interpreter mode (live spoken translation) supports far fewer languages and is more demanding. You can translate incoming messages automatically and even get AI help writing replies in different styles.

Call Screening returns with Tensor G3 doing more of the heavy lifting. Assistant can pick up calls, understand context, suggest quick replies, and transcribe IVR menus from businesses so you can tap options instead of listening to them. It can also suggest better times to call if lines are busy.

The Recorder app gets smarter transcription with speaker labels, filler-word removal, and full-text search across recordings. That’s gold for journalists and heavy note-takers. System-wide text and image selection from the recent apps view lets you grab content even from images, and Chrome can tap Google’s models to summarize long articles into bullet points — where available.

Google Photos gets Magic Editor under the Edit menu, going beyond simple object eraser. You can move non-human subjects around, change the sky, and generate multiple variations, plus remove background noise from videos. Photos also stores luminance metadata to enable HDR-style playback in the Photos app, similar to what iPhones have done with HDR display rendering.

Two big caveats: many of these “Pixel-only” features are region- and language-locked, and that fragmentation still hasn’t gone away. Also, while the OS feels smooth and haptics are improved — along with a faster, more accurate fingerprint reader — you’re still depending on cloud processing for some AI features.

Price, Competition, and Verdict

The Pixel 8 starts at $700 in the US and around €800 in the EU, roughly €150 more than the Pixel 7 at launch. In the US, it undercuts the iPhone 15 and Galaxy S23 on MSRP, but both of those are easy to find on sale.

Against the iPhone 15, Google wins on a 120Hz refresh rate, a larger main sensor, faster charging, a better ultrawide with autofocus, and a longer support window — 7 years of OS and security updates versus Apple’s roughly 5-year cycle. Apple hits back with stronger battery life, a far more powerful chipset, better video quality, and a slightly brighter display with Dolby Vision support.

Up against the Galaxy S23, the Pixel 8 offers superior camera quality overall and faster, longer software support, while Samsung counters with a 3x telephoto, stronger battery life, tougher Victus 2 glass, and a more powerful chipset. Samsung’s software features also tend to be universally available instead of region-locked.

Other compact options like the Xiaomi 13 and Asus Zenfone 10 lean on Snapdragon horsepower, longer battery life, and faster charging. The Xiaomi 13 adds a proper 3.2x telephoto and Dolby Vision display support, while the Zenfone 10 offers a grippy back and 144Hz panel, but both struggle to match the Pixel 8’s camera consistency and software support promise.

The Pixel 8 ends up being a very easy phone to recommend — with clear asterisks. You get a compact flagship with a great 120Hz OLED, one of the best stills cameras in its class, a big leap in wired charging (for Pixel), strong stereo sound, and arguably the smartest Android software package, backed by an industry-leading 7-year support promise.

You also get sub-flagship performance versus Snapdragon rivals, aggressive throttling under sustained load, weaker total endurance than last year despite a bigger battery, a downgraded wireless charging spec, and a frustrating list of arbitrarily gated camera and software features on the non-Pro model and in many regions.

If you value camera quality, size, and long-term support more than raw performance or battery longevity, the Pixel 8 is one of the most compelling compact Android phones right now. Just go in knowing you’re paying a 2023 flagship price for a phone that’s brilliant in some areas and half-baked in others.
