The Google Pixel 6 Pro is the best Pixel Google’s ever made — and it still doesn’t fully catch the Android flagships it wants to replace.
Design: Jewel-Toned Glass With Practical Trade-Offs
Google rebuilt the Pixel 6 Pro from scratch, and it shows. The dual-tone glass back, framed by a polished recycled aluminum rail and that full-width camera bar, looks more like a designer gadget than any previous Pixel. Gorilla Glass Victus on both sides and IP68 rating put it in the same durability class as premium Samsung and Apple phones.
Size-wise, this is a large device: 163.9 x 75.9 x 8.9mm and 210g, essentially S21 Ultra territory. The curved 6.71-inch front glass helps it sit better in the hand, but this is not a one-handed phone. The glossy finish picks up fingerprints fast, especially on darker colors, and Google’s own translucent cases don’t help much — they’re loose enough that dust sneaks in, which can mark the frame over time.
The hardware layout is standard flagship Android: USB-C, stereo speakers (one bottom, one earpiece), and an in-display optical fingerprint scanner. The playful accented power key that used to be a Pixel signature is gone, replaced by a more generic metal button set. It’s a clean, premium design, but not especially friendly to people who hate smudges or bulk.
Display: First 120Hz Pixel, Finally Up to Flagship Speed
The Pixel 6 Pro’s 6.71-inch LTPO AMOLED is the most ambitious display Google has shipped. You get QHD+ resolution (1440 x 3120, 512ppi), 19.5:9 aspect ratio, HDR10 support, and a 120Hz refresh rate that can drop to 10Hz to save power.
Brightness is where Google closes past gaps, but doesn’t quite beat the big players. Manual brightness tops out around 497 nits; with Adaptive Brightness, it peaks at about 860 nits. That’s a major upgrade over older Pixels, but short of the 1000+ nit peaks we’ve seen from current Apple, Samsung, and vivo flagships. In practice, sunlight legibility is good, not class-leading.
Color tuning is straightforward. Three presets cover most needs: Adaptive (DCI-P3, average deltaE ~2.5), Natural (sRGB, average deltaE ~1.5), and Boosted (slightly more saturated sRGB with deltaE ~1.9). There’s no granular color temperature slider and no option to switch between FHD and QHD resolution; Google decided to keep the choices simple, which power users may find limiting.
The move to curved edges will split opinions. It looks high-end and lets Google add some software padding to improve typing comfort, but anyone who prefers flat panels or hates edge glare may not be thrilled.
Tensor and Performance: Smart Silicon, Uneven Power
Tensor is Google’s first custom chipset for Pixel, co-designed with and manufactured by Samsung. Compared to the Snapdragon 765G in the Pixel 5, Google claims 80% faster CPU and 370% faster GPU performance. The CPU cluster uses an unusual 2+2+4 layout: two Cortex-X1 cores at 2.8GHz, two Cortex-A76 at 2.25GHz, and four Cortex-A55 at 1.8GHz, paired with a 20-core Mali-G78 MP20 GPU.
On benchmarks, Tensor is competitive but not dominant. Single-core Geekbench 5 scores sit between Snapdragon 870 and Snapdragon 888. Multi-core performance lands closer to Snapdragon 778G and Dimensity 1200 devices, lagging behind Snapdragon 865/870/888 phones. In AnTuTu 9, it ranks just below Snapdragon 888 but ahead of Snapdragon 870 and 778G.
Graphics are a different story. The 20-core Mali-G78 keeps up with Snapdragon 888 in offscreen tests and even pulls ahead of both Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100 Galaxy S21 Ultra variants in onscreen runs at the same resolution. In 3DMark, Pixel 6 Pro scores among the top Android devices.
The catch is thermals. Under sustained load — think 20 minutes of Genshin Impact — the phone gets very warm. CPU temps can hit ~65°C, with the battery around ~43°C. The system then throttles performance gradually. The ramp-down is controlled enough that you don’t get constant stutters, but this is not the phone you buy if your main use case is hours of high-end gaming.
For day-to-day use, Tensor’s real pitch is machine learning. The dedicated TPU and “Context Hub” offload things like language processing, HDR video (HDRnet), and always-on features to specialized blocks, theoretically improving efficiency in those tasks even if raw CPU benchmarks aren’t chart-topping.
Battery, Charging, and Speakers: Big Cell, Middling Results
On paper, the 5,003mAh battery plus LTPO panel and Tensor efficiency pitch should scream all-day confidence. In testing, the Pixel 6 Pro lands on the okay side of average. Its overall endurance rating is 84 hours, with roughly 26:21h talk time, 12:32h web browsing, and 15:35h video playback.
The weak point is standby drain. For a 5,000mAh-class phone, idle performance is underwhelming. The likely suspect is modem inefficiency in the Samsung-sourced 5G stack built into Tensor, though that’s speculative and could be partially improved with firmware.
Wired charging is capped at 30W, but there’s no charger in the box. Google sells a separate 30W adapter, and any PPS-compatible 30W+ brick should hit similar speeds. Wireless charging goes up to 23W — but only on the new Pixel Stand revision, which wasn’t initially available. Standard Qi works, plus reverse wireless charging.
Speakers follow the usual flagship pattern: bottom-firing unit plus earpiece. Volume is solid and distortion-free at max, good for podcasts and YouTube. For music, mids and treble can sound a bit thin. It’s serviceable, not a portable speaker replacement.
Android 12 and Tensor Features: Voice and Translate First
Pixel 6 Pro ships with Android 12 and Google’s latest design language, but its main software differentiators lean on Tensor’s local AI. Assistant Voice Typing upgrades Gboard’s dictation from a fallback feature into something you can realistically use all day.
Voice typing now runs entirely on-device, so you get near-instant transcription without needing a data connection. You can start by hitting the mic button or saying “Hey Google, type,” and the system automatically handles punctuation in supported languages. You can correct words by tapping them and re-speaking, say commands like “Clear,” “Send,” “Clear all,” or “Stop,” and even insert some emojis by name.
Live Translate is the other Tensor showcase. It works in two main modes: translating messages in supported chat apps and transcribing/translation of spoken content in a handful of languages. You have to manually download language packs in system settings, and support is limited to a set of major languages and a small list of messaging apps.
Functionally, it does what it claims, but it isn’t smooth. Translated subtitles morph as the sentence is processed, which can be disorienting to read. Some apps, like Netflix, block it entirely due to content restrictions. It’s a glimpse of where on-device translation is going, not a polished replacement for dedicated translation workflows yet.
Other software tweaks are more subtle: an in-display fingerprint scanner with typical optical behavior, keyboard padding near the curved edges to reduce accidental touches, and the usual Pixel extras like Now Playing and powerful camera integration inside Google Lens.
Cameras: New Sensors, Familiar Google Processing
Pixel 6 Pro is the first Pixel to truly overhaul its camera hardware. The main sensor is a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN1 (1/1.31″, 1.2µm pixels, f/1.85, OIS, dual-pixel AF), binned down to 12.5MP output with effectively 2.4µm pixels. Google says it captures 2.5x more light than the old 12.2MP unit.
The telephoto is a 48MP 1/2″ sensor (0.8µm, f/3.5, OIS, PDAF) behind a periscope lens with 4x optical zoom, extending to 20x with Super Res Zoom. The ultrawide is 12MP (1.25µm, f/2.2), but lacks autofocus, so there’s no macro mode. The front camera is 11.1MP with a wider 20mm equivalent field of view and 4K/30fps video support.
Daylight shots from the main camera show excellent detail, strong dynamic range, and the signature Pixel contrasty look. However, the new sensor plus Google’s HDR+ tuning can push processing too far. Images often look over-sharpened, with shadows lifted more than necessary. Whites don’t always stay white, blacks don’t always stay black, and the overall scene can feel flatter than reality.
Compared to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Pixel 6 Pro images may have more immediate “pop” but can be less accurate, with more noise at the frame edges where HDR+ is working overtime. The older Pixel 5 sometimes looks more consistent, even if it can’t match the 6 Pro’s raw resolving power.
The 4x periscope performs well, especially in daylight. Its images are slightly less processed than the main camera’s, with more natural textures and very good dynamic range. At 10x, Super Res Zoom delivers surprisingly usable shots, even against the S21 Ultra’s dedicated 10x lens. Samsung tends to produce darker, more realistic shadows; Google goes for vibrancy and clarity.
The ultrawide benefits from better light capture and improved dynamic range over the Pixel 5, but in some scenes the difference is subtle. Noise suppression is stronger, and colors are richer, but the lack of autofocus limits flexibility.
Portraits use the main camera at 1x and 2x crops that roughly mimic 50mm and 70mm perspectives. Subject separation is generally excellent, especially around hair and glasses, but 2x portraits can look less convincing due to the combination of digital zoom and artificial blur. Depth rendering still doesn’t quite match the more natural falloff Google achieved on the Pixel 4 XL’s dedicated telephoto setup.
The front camera’s wider field of view is welcome, and detail is significantly improved over the Pixel 5, especially when using the full 0.7x width instead of the default cropped 1x. Dynamic range is solid, but harsh lighting reveals over-processing in highlights and hair. White clothing is a recurring challenge for the color pipeline, showing different tints across similar scenes.
Low Light and Video: Strong, With Some Quirks
The larger main sensor plus Night Sight and HDR+ combine for very strong low-light performance. Even without Night Sight, the main camera produces usable, well-exposed shots with controlled noise. With Night Sight enabled, detail jumps dramatically, and scenes can look brighter than reality — impressive, but not always natural.
All three rear cameras support Night Sight, but behavior is inconsistent. The 4x periscope doesn’t always activate in very low light, instead falling back to a crop from the main sensor, yielding fuzzy results. The ultrawide can capture decent Night Sight shots, but given how good the main camera is, there’s little reason to reach for it unless you absolutely need the wider field.
Color and white balance between the main and ultrawide can drift in low light, sometimes producing slightly different interpretations of the same scene.
Video is where Tensor’s HDRnet comes in. The Pixel 6 Pro can shoot up to 4K/60fps with HDRnet tone mapping applied per frame at up to 498 million pixels per second. 4K footage from the main camera is sharp, low-noise, and has excellent dynamic range. Still frames pulled from 4K clips are often good enough to share as photos.
4K/30 from the 4x periscope is similarly strong, though, strangely, Full HD modes don’t appear to use the tele hardware and instead crop from the main sensor at 4x. 2x video crops are noticeably softer, and 4K/60 is limited to the main camera only.
Stabilization is a Pixel strong suit and continues here. Standard modes deliver smooth walking footage without jelly effect, and Active mode (1080p/30) is available for more aggressive movement. Cinematic Pan uses 60fps capture, then slows playback for smoother-looking motion.
Selfie video tops out at 4K/30 with optional “speech enhancement” that aggressively suppresses background noise. It does make vocals sound thinner, but speech intelligibility improves significantly in loud environments. 1080/60 selfie footage looks noticeably worse, with more sharpening and reduced dynamic range.
Pricing, Competition, and Who Should Buy It
The Pixel 6 Pro starts at $899 and is only sold in a limited list of markets including the US, Canada, several European countries, Japan, Taiwan, the UK, and Ireland. Availability has been tight, with backorders stretching into later months.
Inside Google’s own lineup, the $599 Pixel 6 is the obvious alternative: smaller 6.4-inch flat 90Hz display, 8GB RAM instead of 12GB, no periscope zoom, and a slightly smaller 4614mAh battery. Older Pixels like the Pixel 5 and 5a still offer excellent cameras and better battery life for less, but lack the new hardware and Tensor features.
On the iOS side, the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro compete directly, with the 13 Pro Max’s display most closely matching the 6 Pro’s size. Apple still has the edge in camera consistency and battery life at the high end. From Samsung, the Galaxy S21 Ultra sits just above the Pixel 6 Pro in price (often discounted) with brighter display, more versatile telephoto setup, and stronger sustained performance, plus S Pen support on some models.
Other Android flagships like Oppo’s Find X3 Pro and Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra bring Snapdragon 888 power, high-refresh AMOLEDs, advanced camera systems, and significantly faster wired charging than the Pixel 6 Pro’s 30W.
Google promises three years of OS updates and five years of security patches, narrowing the support gap with Apple and outpacing many Android OEMs. For owners of older Pixels waiting for a true flagship, the 6 Pro finally fits that bill. For recent Pixel 5/5a users, the gains come with trade-offs in battery and thermal behavior, so waiting for a second-generation Tensor may be the smarter play.
