OnePlus 9 Review: A $729 ‘Flagship’ That Plays It Too Safe

If you’re eyeing the OnePlus 9 as your next “value flagship”, you need to lower your expectations before you pull the trigger.

On paper, this is classic OnePlus: Snapdragon 888, 120Hz AMOLED, Hasselblad-branded cameras, Warp Charge 65T, and OxygenOS 11. In reality, the non-Pro OnePlus 9 feels like a carefully restricted sidekick to the 9 Pro, not a flagship that can stand on its own at $729.

Design: Familiar, Plastic, and Clearly Second-Class

To say the OnePlus 9 design is familiar is underselling it. This is basically a OnePlus 8T with a reshuffled camera island and a new logo on the back.

The front is identical to the 8T: a 6.55-inch flat display with a corner hole-punch. If you liked that look, you’ll be fine here. Flat glass is still the practical choice, and the punch-hole is as polarizing as ever.

The real downgrade is the frame. The 8T used aluminum; the OnePlus 9 switches to fiber-reinforced plastic. It’s convincing to the eye and decent in the hand, and you avoid ugly antenna lines, but this is a $729 phone being sold against metal-and-glass competitors. If you expect “flagship materials” at this price, this move is hard to defend.

Front and back are still Gorilla Glass 5, not the newer formulations. There’s some basic water protection (gasket around the SIM tray), but no IP68 rating like the OnePlus 9 Pro. In 202x flagship territory, “probably fine” against water is not competitive.

The back comes in Winter Mist, Arctic Sky, and Astral Black, with a mix of matte and glossy finishes. The new camera module is cleaner and less busy than the 8T’s, and the Hasselblad logo reflects nicely in the light. It looks fine. It just doesn’t feel like much progress.

Display: Great 120Hz Panel, Wasted Potential for Gaming

OnePlus reused the 6.55-inch 2400×1800 8-bit AMOLED from the 8T, and to be fair, it’s still a very good screen. You get 120Hz variable refresh and HDR playback, with excellent color accuracy: average deltaE 2000 around 1.7 in both sRGB and Display-P3, and close to full coverage of both.

You can switch between sRGB “Natural” and more saturated P3 “Vivid” modes. Android’s color management lets the phone auto-switch to P3 in supported apps, so Natural is arguably the best default.

The 120Hz implementation is half-smart. It runs at 120Hz while you interact, then drops to 60Hz (brightness >50%) or 90Hz (below 50%) when idle. Certain apps (Camera, Google Maps, fullscreen video, most games) are locked to 60Hz. This is not LTPO, so it can’t do the 1Hz tricks the 9 Pro claims.

Where OnePlus really drops the ball is gaming. Only a small, whitelisted handful of titles (Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, Pokémon Go, etc.) can run at up to 90Hz. Nothing goes above 90Hz, and even those games get bumped down to 60Hz as soon as you stop touching the screen, which looks jarring in motion-heavy scenes.

There are other annoyances: Vibrant Color Effect Pro appears to do nothing on the OnePlus 9, and the new AI “Ultra-high video resolution” sharpening for supported apps (like Instagram) can look artificial. HDR performance is solid, but the 8-bit panel means true 10-bit HDR content isn’t fully realized. Blacks in HDR show a gray glow in a dark room.

The under-display optical fingerprint reader works quickly with a consistent finger, but it’s placed unusually low on the screen, just above the navigation bar. It’s usable, but the placement feels off.

Performance and Battery: Snapdragon 888 Muscle, Average Endurance

Under the hood, the OnePlus 9 runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 with an integrated X60 5G modem. CPU cores are the standard 1× Cortex-X1 (2.84GHz), 3× Cortex-A78-based Gold (2.42GHz), and 4× Cortex-A55-based Silver (1.8GHz) under the Kryo 680 branding. The Adreno 660 GPU promises a sizable jump over Adreno 650, with support for OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.1, and variable rate shading.

On benchmarks, the OnePlus 9 sits just behind the 9 Pro but ahead of most other Snapdragon 888 phones, trading blows with the Asus ROG Phone 5 and staying ahead of other 888 devices from Xiaomi and Oppo. Graphics performance is excellent, and the 1080p-class resolution helps it post strong on-screen numbers.

LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage keep things snappy. There’s nothing to complain about in real-world use: heavy games, editing apps, multitasking — it all just flies.

Thermals are managed with the “Cool Play” system: thicker graphite sheets, larger copper foil, and a bigger vapor chamber. Under prolonged load (3DMark Wild Life Stress Test), the phone showed about 55.9% stability at 120Hz, with noticeable throttling after several loops but no uncomfortable hot spots.

Battery is a dual-cell 4,500mAh setup, same capacity as the 8T, paired with Warp Charge 65T. The charger fills the phone in 29 minutes, about 10 minutes faster than the previous 65W implementation on the OnePlus 8.

Endurance is fine but not great. Talk time passed 28 hours, web browsing over 13 hours, and video playback over 15 hours, for an overall 87h rating. The issue is standby drain: Snapdragon 888 pulls more than the older 865, which is why the 8T actually did better overall with the same capacity. Other 888 phones like Xiaomi Mi 11 and Oppo Find X3 Pro show similar behavior.

Wireless charging support is fragmented. The OnePlus 9 supports 15W wireless and 5W reverse wireless — but only in North American and European variants. No Warp Charge 50 Wireless, and no wireless at all in some regions.

Stereo speakers (bottom-firing plus earpiece) earn a “Very Good” loudness rating and behave intelligently in portrait vs. landscape. Audio output is in line with the 9 Pro. No headphones in the box, and no USB-C audio adapter either.

OxygenOS 11: Still Fast, But Less Special

OxygenOS 11 on the OnePlus 9 is tuned for large displays with UI elements pulled lower for easier one-handed reach. Built-in apps and settings follow this layout, and the skin remains fast and relatively clean compared to many competitors.

Turbo Boost 3.0 uses RAM compression and “Virtual RAM” (storage mapped as temporary RAM) to keep roughly 25% more apps in memory. In practice, it just helps with aggressive multitasking without obvious slowdown.

You can pick between Roboto and OnePlus Sans during setup, adjust icon shapes, grid size (default 5×5), and customize ambient display styles, including the “Insight” clock that visualizes how often you unlock your phone.

The OnePlus Shelf lives in a secondary pull-down from the home screen with customizable widgets, while the Google Feed occupies the leftmost page. Quick Settings and notifications are laid out in a familiar way with six toggles up top and a brightness slider.

OxygenOS 11 is no longer the almost-stock Android skin it used to be, but it’s still fast, smooth, and not weighed down by gimmicks. There’s no true one-handed mode yet, though that’s expected from a future Android version. Settings organization is imperfect, but that’s hardly unique in 202x Android.

Cameras: Hasselblad Branding, B+ Results, and Some Bizarre Choices

The rear triple-camera setup looks serious: a 48MP Sony IMX689 main (23mm, f/1.8), a 50MP Sony IMX766 ultra-wide (14mm, f/2.2 freeform lens) that doubles as macro, and a 2MP monochrome sensor. But there’s one glaring omission: no OIS. All stabilization is digital.

OnePlus is pushing its new Hasselblad partnership with “Natural Color Calibration” and a Hasselblad-themed camera UI — orange shutter button, matching sound — and an updated Pro mode that’s actually more usable thanks to a straightforward horizontal slider for ISO, shutter, and other parameters.

The problems: the rest of the camera app still has long-standing issues. Exposure control in Auto mode uses a tiny, finicky slider with a microscopic lock icon. The zoom dial is frustrating to set precisely. The settings screen doesn’t rotate in landscape, making quick tweaks awkward. Pro mode is limited to the main camera only, and there’s no Pro mode for video.

Daylight performance from the main camera is good but inconsistent. Detail is decent at 12MP, but OnePlus has cranked sharpening to compensate for the wider field of view versus the 8 Pro, and textures can look artificial up close. Surprisingly, there’s noticeable noise even in bright light at low ISO, similar to the 9 Pro. RAW files don’t show this, suggesting poor or overzealous processing.

Colors are mostly neutral, though greens tend to be oversaturated under bright light. Dynamic range is skewed towards contrasty images: highlights are controlled, but shadows are often too dark. Pro mode helps a lot here — even JPEGs from Pro have better DR, less sharpening, and less coarse noise, and 12-bit-equivalent RAW gives you very malleable files.

The 50MP ultra-wide is legitimately strong hardware. Detail is impressive for an ultra-wide, and the freeform lens largely eliminates edge distortion. Unfortunately, it inherits the same issues as the main camera: heavy sharpening, visible noise, and crushed shadows for a punchy look. There’s no Pro mode access for this lens, so you’re stuck with OnePlus’s tuning.

There’s no dedicated telephoto; zoom is entirely digital up to 10x. The default 2x toggle just blows up the 12MP output rather than cropping the sensor smartly, leading to soft, unimpressive images. The lack of OIS becomes obvious the more you zoom.

Macro is actually well-implemented using the ultra-wide sensor. You don’t get super-close focusing like some dedicated 2MP macros, but the image quality is much better, and you avoid the usual low-res gimmickry.

The 2MP monochrome camera is exactly that: spec sheet padding. It doesn’t shoot standalone images; it just assists the main camera in monochrome mode. The results don’t look meaningfully better than simply desaturating a color photo or using a built-in filter.

Low-light performance on the main camera is impressive, especially with Nightscape. Even without Nightscape you can get solid shots with good detail and exposure, already ahead of the 8T and close to the 8 Pro. With Nightscape, the OnePlus 9 nearly matches the 9 Pro, with strong detail and color. The ultra-wide also benefits massively from Nightscape, producing genuinely usable night shots, leagues ahead of older OnePlus ultra-wides.

Portrait mode only works on the main camera, and the default behavior is a digitally zoomed 2x view. This reduces distortion but softens detail. You can switch back to the native focal length for a wider, more distorted look. There’s no slider to control background blur intensity, so bokeh can feel overdone and subject separation failures stand out.

The 16MP front camera (Sony IMX471, f/2.4, fixed-focus) is the same unit OnePlus has been recycling since the OnePlus 7 Pro. It’s fine in daylight: good detail, decent color, and adequate dynamic range. In low light, there’s no Nightscape, and the lack of autofocus plus limited 1080p60 video recording makes it feel very dated, especially compared to devices with wider or dual front cameras.

Video capture is technically ambitious: 1080p and 4K at 30/60fps, plus 8K 30fps on both main and ultra-wide. There’s EIS at 30/60fps (with a big crop), 1080p 240fps and 720p 480fps slow-motion, Super Stable mode (heavy crop from the ultra-wide), Nightscape video, Portrait video, and a 3-HDR mode that combines three exposures per frame at 1080p30 and 4K30.

8K from the main camera is underwhelming for the bitrate (around 150Mbps H.264) and the Quad Bayer sensor structure. It’s sharper than 4K but nowhere near what you’d expect from 33MP. 8K from the ultra-wide looks worse than 4K and seems to be upscaled, with blurry detail and interlacing-like artifacts.

4K 30/60 from both lenses is much better: good detail, strong dynamic range, and competent stabilization, albeit with a 1.5× effective crop that complicates framing. 3-HDR is genuinely useful outdoors, giving more natural exposure and better shadow detail.

There’s still no true HDR10/PQ 10-bit recording, no video Pro mode, and the Nightscape and Portrait video modes are unimpressive — more checkbox features than serious tools.

Overall, the camera system earns a solid B+. It’s clearly better than the 8T across the board and much closer to the 8 Pro in low light, but it doesn’t convincingly beat the 8 Pro’s overall image quality. And the Hasselblad branding doesn’t magically fix OnePlus’s fundamental processing issues.

Price and Positioning: The Real Problem

The OnePlus 9 starts at $729. That pushes it into direct competition with phones that simply give you more.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 starts at $699 and often sells for less. Yes, it has a plastic back, but it delivers a complete flagship package otherwise, and Samsung routinely sweetens the deal with promos or accessories.

If you want something larger, the Galaxy S21+ can be found around $799 or even $749 in some deals. It brings a more complete feature set, IP68, and a more cohesive flagship experience.

The Asus ROG Phone 5 lives in the same price neighborhood and is aggressively specced as a gaming phone with very few compromises elsewhere. If you actually care about high-refresh gaming, Asus is doing more for you than OnePlus.

On the cross-platform side, the iPhone 12 is a tough rival in this bracket: strong cameras, high-end performance, long software support, big app and game ecosystem, and high resale value. The 60Hz display and lack of charger in the box are obvious drawbacks, but as a complete package, it’s very competitive.

Against that backdrop, the OnePlus 9 shows its compromises clearly: plastic frame, no IP rating, no telephoto, downgraded main sensor versus 8 Pro, no OIS, inconsistent wireless charging availability, and a camera that still doesn’t quite punch at the top tier.

The bigger issue is philosophical. OnePlus expects you to accept repeated price hikes while simultaneously shaving away features and shoving the real upgrades into the Pro line. From being the hero of the lineup, the non-Pro model now feels like a deliberately handicapped upsell tool.

If the OnePlus 9 is heavily discounted in your region, it’s a decent buy: fast, pleasant to use, and better than the 8T where it counts. At full $729 retail, it’s hard not to see it as a missed opportunity.
