Everyone’s talking about the OnePlus 9 Pro’s Hasselblad camera as if it finally makes OnePlus a camera leader — the reality is far more complicated.
Design: Premium, Comfortable… and Forgettable
The OnePlus 9 Pro sticks closely to the 8 Pro’s design language, but dials in some welcome usability tweaks. The chassis is slightly shorter and narrower (163.2 x 73.6 x 8.7mm, 197g), which makes the phone marginally easier to handle even though it’s still a big, heavy slab by any sane standard.
The display’s aggressive waterfall curve has been toned down. It’s still curved, but less dramatically, which reduces edge glare, vignetting, and some accidental touches compared to the 8 Pro. Palm rejection is improved but not solved — you can still trigger the screen just by holding the device at the edges, especially in the camera app.
Button placement has been refined. The alert slider and power key sit on the right, with the volume rocker shifted lower on the left, avoiding the pinky-rubbing issue from the 8 Pro in landscape. The bottom side keeps the dual-slot speaker grille, USB-C port, and dual-nanoSIM tray; there’s no expandable storage. On the top, the decorative ridge from the 8 Pro is gone, replaced by a simple curve and a noise-canceling mic.
The camera housing is where the visual difference is most obvious. OnePlus has dropped its distinctive center-line pill for a more generic rectangular island in the top-left corner, with Hasselblad branding. Because the bump is now off-center, the phone rocks on a table. Build quality is solid, IP68 water and dust resistance is here, and both sides use Gorilla Glass 5 rather than a newer, tougher glass.
Finishes include Morning Mist (glossy and extremely fingerprint-prone), Pine Green (matte), and Stellar Black (matte with a sandstone-like texture). Morning Mist looks elegant and has a liquid-metal vibe, but lacks the visual punch of older OnePlus colors like Nebula Blue or Ultramarine Blue. The overall impression: premium and well-built, but generic next to more distinctive rivals.
Display: Excellent 120Hz LTPO Panel with Frustrating Limits
On paper, the 9 Pro’s display is flagship-grade across the board. You get a 6.7-inch 3216 x 1440 10-bit LTPO AMOLED with a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz. HDR support spans HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG.
Brightness is strong. Using a small 15% test window, the panel peaks at 1,150 nits, slightly under the advertised 1,300 nits but still in proper flagship territory. With GSMArena’s standard 75% pattern, the screen hits 871 nits with Adaptive brightness and 523 nits manually, making sunlight legibility a non-issue.
Color tuning is flexible. The default Vivid mode is punchy, with an average deltaE around 3.1 and a max deviation of 5.8. sRGB mode is highly accurate with an average deltaE of 0.7 and max 1.7, which is under the threshold of human perception. Natural, AMOLED Wide Gamut, sRGB, and Display P3 profiles offer different baselines with sliders for warmth and tint. Natural mode plus Android’s color management lets the phone switch to P3 where apps support it.
The LTPO backplane allows refresh rate scaling supposedly from 1Hz up to 120Hz. In theory, it drops to content-native rates (24Hz for 24fps video, 1Hz for static images) and ramps up when you touch the display. In practice, there’s a catch: OnePlus doesn’t let users lock to 120Hz, and the test tools used here couldn’t confirm the claimed 1Hz floor. That uncertainty shows up later in battery results.
For gamers, the situation is worse. Only a small whitelist of titles — Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, Pokémon Go, and a few others — can go beyond 60Hz, and even those top out at 90Hz. Many games are stuck at 60Hz, and the system can drop from 90Hz to 60Hz when you stop interacting, even though the scene is still animating. The result is inconsistent smoothness.
Hyper Touch boosts touch sampling to 360Hz in supported games (PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile, League of Legends: Wild Rift, Brawl Stars), but the reviewer noticed no practical improvement when running CoD Mobile. With games still rendering at 60fps, faster sampling doesn’t translate into obvious responsiveness gains.
There are also extra processing modes: an AI-based Ultra-high video resolution option (at test time Instagram-only) adds edge enhancement that can look artificially crisp, and Vibrant Color Effect Pro, which formerly oversaturated supported video, now appears non-functional on the 9 Pro. Motion graphics smoothing (frame interpolation) is present but introduces the usual soap-opera effect and artifacts, and is best left off.
HDR performance is a strong point. The 9 Pro outperforms the 8 Pro with brighter highlights and better shadow detail while fully covering Display-P3 and leveraging its 10-bit panel. The one quirk: in HDR, blacks never get completely black and instead appear as dark gray in a pitch-black viewing environment. SDR content doesn’t exhibit this.
Performance, OxygenOS 11, and Thermals
Under the hood, the OnePlus 9 Pro runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 with the integrated X60 5G modem, paired with LPDDR5 RAM (up to 6,400 Mbps) and UFS 3.1 storage. There’s no microSD slot on any configuration.
The CPU cluster is standard 888: one 2.84GHz Cortex-X1-based Kryo 680 Prime, three 2.42GHz Cortex-A78-based Kryo 680 Golds, and four 1.8GHz Cortex-A55-based Kryo 680 Silvers. Graphics come from the Adreno 660 GPU with a claimed 35% uplift over Adreno 650 and support for OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan 1.1.
Synthetic benchmarks place the 9 Pro right where you’d expect. It trades blows with the Asus ROG Phone 5, Exynos 2100 Galaxy S21 Ultra, Xiaomi Mi 11, Oppo Find X3 Pro, and Huawei Mate 40 Pro. Single-core CPU scores across recent Android flagships are very close; Apple’s A14 Bionic still leads, but that’s outside this ecosystem.
GPU tests show excellent performance, only slightly behind the actively cooled ROG Phone 5 and otherwise in line with other Snapdragon 888 phones. On-screen tests favor devices with lower-resolution (Full HD+) panels, as usual.
Long-run stability is mixed. In the 3DMark Wild Life stress test with QHD+ and Smart 120Hz enabled, the 9 Pro achieved 55.6% stability. Frame rates drop after a handful of loops and collapse more noticeably by loop 19. During extended PUBG sessions with maxed graphics, the phone becomes noticeably warm. OnePlus’ “Cool Play” thermal setup — thicker graphite, larger copper foil, a bigger vapor chamber — does distribute heat across the frame so there isn’t one hot spot, but it does not keep the phone truly cool.
On the software side, the phone ships with OxygenOS 11. The UI is now optimized for one-handed use on large screens, pushing controls and tabs lower. Core apps and settings are redesign-focused rather than stock Android clones.
Key features include:
- Turbo Boost 3.0, which combines RAM compression and a small pool of Virtual RAM (using storage as overflow) to keep up to 25% more apps resident.
- A choice between Roboto and OnePlus Sans during setup.
- A customizable OnePlus Shelf accessed via a pull-down gesture on the home screen, separate from the standard notification shade.
- Extensive theming options (accent color, icon shape, ambient display clock styles including the usage-based Insight clock).
The in-display fingerprint reader has been moved significantly lower. It’s still usable, but muscle memory from earlier OnePlus phones may need retraining. Despite the focus on one-handed design, OxygenOS 11 still lacks a proper one-handed mode.
Overall, OxygenOS 11 on the 9 Pro is described as clean and fast, no longer near-AOSP, but not bloated either. Navigation and animations feel consistent with the hardware’s horsepower.
Battery, Warp Charge 65T, and 50W Wireless
Battery capacity matches the 8T and 8 Pro at 4,500mAh, implemented as dual 2,250mAh cells. OnePlus continues to lean heavily on fast charging rather than raw endurance.
Wired charging uses Warp Charge 65T, an evolution of the 65W system launched on the 8T. By lowering internal resistance and keeping higher wattage flowing for longer, the 9 Pro cuts full charge time to 31 minutes, slightly better than the 8T’s 39 minutes and just shy of the claimed 29 minutes. It achieves this by charging both cells in parallel.
Wireless charging gets a larger upgrade. The optional Warp Charge 50 Wireless dock delivers up to 50W, promising a full charge in 43 minutes. In a 30-minute test, the phone reached 70%. The dock now uses a removable USB-C cable and relies on the bundled Warp Charge 65T brick for power, fixing the hard-wired cable problem from the earlier Warp Charge 30 Wireless base. Dual charging coils let you place the phone upright or horizontally.
Reverse wireless charging (up to 5W) is supported for topping up other Qi devices.
Battery endurance is where the 9 Pro underwhelms. Despite the LTPO display, Snapdragon 888, and OnePlus’ claims, the measured overall endurance rating slipped compared to the 8 Pro. Talk time hit 33:57h and web browsing endurance was solid at 13:12h, but video playback sagged to 13:34. Combined with the 888’s poor standby results, the total endurance ended up behind the 8 Pro and even some rival 888 phones.
In GSMArena’s comparisons, the 9 Pro landed behind the Xiaomi Mi 11 (89h) but ahead of the Oppo Find X3 Pro (81h). Given the pitch around LTPO efficiency and dynamic refresh, the middling real-world battery life raises questions about how aggressively the panel really scales down.
Cameras: Hasselblad Branding vs Actual Output
The rear camera setup consists of four sensors:
- Main: 48MP Sony IMX789, 23mm-equivalent f/1.8 7P lens with OIS, dual native ISO, 12-bit RAW, and DOL-HDR.
- Ultra-wide: 50MP Sony IMX766, 14mm-equivalent f/2.2 7P freeform lens.
- Telephoto: 8MP, f/2.4 OIS, 3.3x optical zoom over the main.
- Monochrome: 2MP assist-only sensor for black-and-white shots.
The front camera is unchanged from the 7 Pro era: 16MP Sony IMX471, f/2.4, fixed focus, 1080p60 video.
Camera App and Hasselblad Integration
OnePlus’ Hasselblad partnership is focused on color calibration and UI tweaks rather than hardware. The most visible change is the orange shutter button and a new shutter sound matching Hasselblad cameras. Pro mode gets a reworked interface: linear sliders for ISO, white balance, shutter, exposure compensation, and focus replace the old rotary wheel, making manual control more precise.
However, several long-standing UI problems remain. Exposure compensation in Auto mode still uses a tiny, fiddly slider. The zoom control is imprecise and slow to adjust. The camera settings menu doesn’t rotate into landscape, forcing awkward hand gymnastics. A new animated transition when switching lenses looks choppy, especially going from ultra-wide to telephoto.
There are also bugs. In OxygenOS 11.2.1.1, enabling 60fps or 120fps could leave the viewfinder stuck at 30fps even though recordings were at the selected frame rate. Pro mode is still limited to the main rear sensor; you can’t manually control the ultra-wide or telephoto, and there’s no Pro video mode or 24fps recording.
Daylight Still Images: Strong Hardware, Middling Processing
The main IMX789 is technically a big leap over the 8 Pro’s IMX689 in raw capability. In RAW files, it offers better dynamic range and cleaner shadows when pushed in post by up to +3 EV. But the out-of-camera JPEGs are where most users live, and that’s where problems show up.
In daylight, the main camera’s 12MP binned output has good but not class-leading detail. Fine textures can look smeared, and low-frequency surfaces sometimes appear soft. Compared directly, the 9 Pro’s detail is a bit lower than the 8 Pro’s, likely due to the slightly wider field of view packing more scene into the same resolution. OnePlus appears to compensate with sharper edge enhancement, which cannot truly restore detail and instead adds halos.
A 48MP mode doesn’t fix this. Full-res shots, when downscaled to 12MP, are nearly identical to standard images, just with slightly different noise and sharpening characteristics.
Noise is surprisingly visible even at base ISO in bright conditions. It’s mostly hidden on-phone, but cropping or editing reveals it. The 8 Pro, despite similar or higher detail, produced cleaner JPEGs. The more aggressive sharpening on the 9 Pro accentuates noise further.
Color and tone are not the “natural” step forward the Hasselblad logo suggests. Skies and foliage often look over-saturated, with boosted contrast and a cooler white balance outdoors. Reds can shift toward magenta indoors. The 8 Pro frequently delivers more balanced white balance and less overcooked contrast.
Dynamic range is average. Where the 8 Pro leaned toward overexposure, the 9 Pro tends to underexpose, losing shadow detail. UltraShot HDR can still veer into aggressively tone-mapped territory, especially indoors, lacking the subtlety of Apple’s or Google’s processing.
If you’re willing to shoot RAW and process your own images — or at least stick to Pro mode JPEGs with lighter sharpening and more natural contrast — the underlying sensor is excellent. The disconnect is in OnePlus’ (and Hasselblad’s) default tuning.
Ultra-wide, Telephoto, Macro, and the Monochrome Gimmick
The new 50MP IMX766 ultra-wide is one of the more impressive ultra-wide implementations tested. 12.5MP binned shots offer strong detail, and color is reasonably consistent with the main camera, including similar saturation and tonal behavior.
The freeform lens design is the highlight: instead of relying on software distortion correction and cropping, it optically straightens lines before they hit the sensor. The result is a very wide field of view with straight edges and minimal warping, making architecture and interiors look more natural than on typical ultra-wides.
The 8MP 3.3x telephoto does decent work in good light. Detail is satisfactory at native 3.3x, and the reach is fine for most casual zoom use. Chromatic fringing can appear, and autofocus isn’t as quick or confident as the main camera. If the subject is too close, the phone may silently switch to a digital crop from the main sensor, hurting quality.
Macro shooting is handled intelligently by the ultra-wide. When you approach within about six inches, the camera encourages a macro switch. While its minimum focus distance isn’t as extreme as some dedicated 2–5MP macro sensors, overall image quality is vastly better thanks to the larger, higher-quality sensor. For close-ups that don’t demand extreme magnification, it’s a clear win.
The 2MP monochrome camera is hard to justify. It doesn’t capture standalone images; it merely assists the main camera for a single monochrome mode. The same app already applies two other monochrome filters entirely in software. Black-and-white shots from the assisted mode look like any regular software conversion. There’s no obvious benefit, making this feel like a spec-sheet filler.
Low Light and Nightscape
Low light is where the 9 Pro finally feels competitive. The combination of the new main sensor and updated processing delivers very good results before you even touch Nightscape.
In default mode, the main camera captures a solid amount of detail with controlled noise and decent color, even at high ISO values. In many dim scenes, you can shoot handheld without Nightscape and get usable images.
Nightscape then pushes things further: brighter exposure, wider dynamic range, richer color, and noticeably cleaner noise. Autofocus generally behaves well, though very dark, distant subjects can cause hunting beyond the laser AF’s range. The main drawback is stylistic — some Nightscape shots look too bright, effectively turning night into day. Users who prefer a more faithful dark mood may want to manually lower exposure.
The ultra-wide is also impressive in low light, a notable departure from the noisy, soft ultra-wides on many phones. Nightscape improves it significantly as well, producing bright, detailed wide-angle night shots.
Portrait mode on the rear main camera applies a fixed-strength background blur, often achieving pleasing separation but sometimes going too hard, creating a cutout effect. It can be tripped up by hair, glasses, and small gaps.
The front 16MP camera still performs well in daylight, with solid detail, color, and dynamic range, but falls behind in low light due to the lack of Nightscape. There’s no autofocus and video tops out at 1080p60. The field of view is fine for single-person framing but narrower than some competitors — and even OnePlus’ own Nord with its ultra-wide selfie camera and 4K capture.
Video: Flexible but Not Class-Leading
Video options are extensive on paper. The main wide camera supports:
- 1080p at 30/60fps.
- 4K at 30/60/120fps.
- 8K at 30fps.
The ultra-wide can also shoot 1080p30/60, 4K30/60, and even 8K30. The telephoto is limited to 1080p30 natively; any other zoom modes in higher resolutions are crops from the main sensor. EIS works at 30/60fps in both 1080p and 4K, but not in 4K120, and cannot be disabled where present. Slow motion is available at 1080p240 and 720p480. Super Stable, Portrait video, and Nightscape video are all locked to 1080p.
8K30 from the main camera doesn’t fully justify its resolution. At 33MP per frame and around 150Mbps (H.264), the bitrate isn’t high enough to preserve matching detail, and Quad Bayer sensor quirks compound the issue. There is some gain over 4K, but nowhere near a clean 4x.
8K30 from the ultra-wide is worse — likely upscaled from a lower base resolution, with soft detail and artifacts resembling interlacing, leaving it inferior even to its own 4K output.
4K30/60 from the main and ultra-wide is far better balanced. Detail, dynamic range, and general image quality are good, and EIS produces smooth footage in most conditions. The trade-off is a heavy crop: about 1.5x from the full sensor width, which can make framing in tight spaces harder.
4K120 is interesting: it records unstabilized footage with the widest field of view on the main camera, wider than even photo mode due to the lack of any crop. It’s essentially unusable handheld in real time but is meant for post-production slow motion. OnePlus saves the full 120fps stream so you can decide how to slow it in editing — 4x for 30fps or 5x for 24fps, for example. The phone itself actually plays back at 60Hz, so you can’t watch native 120fps video on-device despite the 120Hz panel.
Color management in these files can be awkward in professional workflows because OnePlus tags them in BT.601, which some editors (e.g., DaVinci Resolve in this test) don’t handle well without manual conversion, causing color shifts when transcoding to BT.709.
Nightscape video and Portrait video modes exist but are described as underwhelming and not particularly useful.
Critically, there’s no true HDR video capture (no 10-bit HDR10 or similar), and no Pro video mode to control exposure, white balance, or frame rate beyond basic toggles.
Overall, the 9 Pro is a capable, flexible video phone, but not a standout.
Price, Competition, and OnePlus’ Identity Crisis
The OnePlus 9 Pro starts at $969, firmly planted in the high-end flagship segment it once undercut. That price puts it against some very strong alternatives.
- Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra: Nominally $1,199, but often discounted — at one point down to around $900, undercutting the 9 Pro’s launch price. The S21 Ultra is described as one of the most accomplished phones tested, with superior build, display, cameras, and battery life, plus one of the most versatile zoom systems on the market.
- Xiaomi Mi 11: Not available everywhere, but in regions where it sells, it undercuts the 9 Pro while packing a kitchen-sink flagship spec sheet. MIUI is polarizing, but hardware and feature parity are strong.
- Oppo Find X3 Pro: A sibling-company flagship at about $1,099. It offers striking industrial design, excellent cameras and display, and similar blazing fast charging tech (essentially the same as OnePlus). If you’re already comfortable spending near 9 Pro money, stretching to the Find X3 Pro is an option.
- Asus ROG Phone 5: A gaming-centric device that doubles as a surprisingly well-rounded daily driver, with strong build, a quality display, standout speakers, big battery with fast charging, and relatively clean software. Its cameras aren’t best-in-class but much improved, and it’s the cheapest of this group.
- Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max: Historically priced far above OnePlus, now close enough to compare. It delivers premium industrial design, top-tier display calibration with Dolby Vision, consistently strong cameras, leading performance, strong battery life, long software support, and higher resale value. Downsides include a 60Hz display and no charger in the box.
Where does that leave the OnePlus 9 Pro? It’s a well-built, fast, feature-complete Android flagship: 120Hz QHD+ LTPO AMOLED, Snapdragon 888, IP68, fast wired and wireless charging, and a flexible multi-camera system with particularly good low-light and ultra-wide performance.
But year-over-year, it looks and feels like a modest evolution of the 8 Pro and even the 7 Pro, not a leap. The Hasselblad collaboration currently manifests as color tuning that’s often more polarizing than accurate, a bright orange shutter, and some UI tweaks, not a clearly superior camera experience. Battery life is only average. Gaming support for high refresh is restricted. And the front camera hardware is several generations old.
As pricing creeps into the same band as Samsung, Oppo, Xiaomi, Asus, and even Apple, the expectations rise. The 9 Pro dresses like a top-tier flagship but doesn’t convincingly outperform them in the areas it heavily marketed — especially the camera.
Whether that matters to you depends on priorities. If you’re already in the OnePlus ecosystem and value OxygenOS, fast charging, and a strong but not class-leading camera, the 9 Pro is a familiar, capable upgrade. If you’re platform-agnostic and shopping purely on camera and battery merit at this price tier, competing options may simply be stronger.
