If you’re looking at the original Google Pixel XL in 2024—whether as a cheap used flagship or just for nostalgia—you need to know exactly what Google got right and where it played things too safe.
The Pixel XL wasn’t a Nexus-style dev toy. It was Google’s first attempt at a mass-market, full-price flagship. The result is a phone that nails camera and software support, but falls short of the hardware flex you’d expect for the money.
Design: Premium Build, Anonymous Look
The Pixel XL’s hardware is classic 2016 flagship on paper: a 5.5-inch body, aircraft‑grade aluminum, and tight tolerances courtesy of HTC’s manufacturing. In the hand, it feels solid and well put together, with sturdy metal and fewer seams than the cheap “metal” mid-rangers that were everywhere at the time.
Dimensions are 154.7 x 75.7 x 8.5 mm and 168g, making it shorter, narrower, and lighter than the iPhone 7 Plus, despite matching it on screen size and beating it on battery capacity (3,450mAh vs 2,900mAh). The camera is completely flush with the back, avoiding the now-standard camera bump.
The problem is the look. From the front, the phone is borderline generic: big top and bottom bezels, no front fingerprint reader, no stereo speakers, and nothing visually distinctive. Around the back, you get that polarizing glass window, which both protrudes slightly and coexists with multiple obvious antenna lines. For a device that ditched wireless charging and any real hardware tricks, the glass section feels more like an oddity than a functional design choice.
You also get some ergonomic quirks. The textured power key sits above the volume rocker—reversed from what most Android users are used to—so expect a week or so of pressing volume up when you meant to wake the phone. At least the texture makes the power button easy to identify by feel, and a double-press from sleep launches the camera quickly.
No dual-SIM, no microSD, and a single nanoSIM tray round out the physical compromises. On the 32GB model, you start with only about 29.7GB of usable storage and roughly 7GB eaten by the system, so the 128GB variant was the only sensible choice for heavy 4K shooters or media hoarders.
Display and VR: Built for Daydream, Not Color Nerds
Google was very deliberate about the display: 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED at 534ppi, chosen as much for Daydream VR as for everyday use. High pixel density matters in VR; here, QHD is the right call compared to 1080p flagships of the era.
Brightness tops out around 430 nits—nothing crazy on paper—but sunlight legibility is among the best tested, even without the boosted auto-brightness tricks some AMOLED panels use. Under harsh light, it holds its own against bigger-name rivals.
Out of the box, though, color accuracy is mediocre. The default profile behaves like a permanent “Vivid” mode: average deltaE around 5.4, max around 13. The Nexus 5X and HTC 10 both did significantly better in sRGB, and the iPhone 7 Plus was in another league entirely. There are no visible display modes in settings beyond a night-time blue light filter.
Hidden in Developer options is an sRGB toggle that drops average deltaE to about 2.6 and max to 4.7, putting it ahead of the HTC 10’s calibrated mode and closer—though still not equal—to Apple’s numbers. So the panel is capable; Google just buried the accurate option where typical buyers wouldn’t find it.
For VR, the panel uses a low-persistence mode, exposed via a “low motion blur” option for Daydream. It pushes the high frame rates VR needs and cuts down ghosting, but it’s disabled for regular phone use because of the power and performance hit. Outside VR, you’re using a reasonably bright, sharp AMOLED with strong outdoor visibility but color tuning that needs manual fixing.
Performance and Connectivity: Snapdragon 821 Without the Punch
On paper, the Pixel XL rides into battle with a Snapdragon 821 and 4GB of RAM. In reality, it uses the slower 821AB variant: the CPU big cores top out at 2.15GHz and the GPU at 624MHz—the same clocks as a standard Snapdragon 820.
The full-fat 821 runs up to 2.34GHz/2.19GHz on CPU and 653MHz on GPU, so phones like the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus pull roughly 20% better single-core scores. In practice, Pixel XL performance looks a lot like every well-optimized Snapdragon 820 flagship: fast enough, but not leading. OnePlus 3, Galaxy S7 edge, and Moto Z all score better in several benchmarks, and Apple’s A10 in the iPhone 7 Plus “wins by a wide margin” in CPU tests.
GPU performance is similarly 820-ish. It’s fine for demanding games at 1080p, but at native QHD some titles will need to dial back graphics to keep frame rates high—again, not ideal for a phone that Google pitched as Daydream VR‑ready.
Storage is UFS 2.0 with excellent read speeds and just okay writes. The phone feels fluid and responsive, and Nougat’s software optimization certainly helps, but anyone expecting a meaningful performance edge from the “821” branding doesn’t get it here.
On the connectivity side, the Pixel XL is more complete. The Snapdragon X12 modem supports LTE Cat. 11 (up to 600/75Mbps, with some carriers limited to Cat. 9 450/50Mbps). You also get Wi‑Fi a/b/g/n/ac with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC (for Android Pay via Pixel Imprint), and GPS with GLONASS.
Voice quality leans on Ultra HD Voice over VoLTE and Wi‑Fi where carriers support it, and Qualcomm Fluence Pro uses two or three microphones (depending on loudspeaker use) for noise cancellation. For a single-SIM phone targeting the US and Western Europe, the radio stack is modern and well-spec’d.
USB Type‑C runs at USB 3.0 speeds for data, but there’s no TV-out mode. You do get a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top edge, and wired audio quality into an external amp is described as excellent with very high volume. Plugging in headphones causes some degradation in stereo separation and a volume drop to just above average, but nothing disastrous.
Battery and Charging: Good Enough, Not Galaxy-Level
The Pixel XL’s 3,450mAh battery is solid for a 5.5-inch device, especially when you compare it to the thinner but smaller‑cell iPhone 7 Plus (2,900mAh). Google leans on Nougat’s improved Doze implementation and claims 32 hours of talk time and 14 hours of Wi‑Fi browsing.
In standardized testing, the phone lands at a 78-hour endurance rating. That beats the iPhone 7 Plus, but falls well short of the Galaxy S7 edge’s 98 hours (or 67 hours if you enable Always On Display). Talk time claims hold up: it hits and slightly exceeds the advertised 32 hours.
The weak spot is Wi‑Fi browsing: instead of the promised 14 hours, testing shows around 9.5 hours, which trails both the iPhone 7 Plus and Galaxy S7 edge by a noticeable margin. Video playback fares better, getting closer to the official 14-hour number, but still not matching the S7 edge’s 20-hour result.
Charging is handled through USB Power Delivery at up to 18W using the bundled adapter. Google’s marketing line—7 hours of “mixed use” from 15 minutes—translates in testing to about 46% charge in 30 minutes from empty. It’s fast, if not class-leading compared to proprietary fast-charge systems.
The retail box is unusually generous with cables: an 18W PD “Quick Switch” charger, USB‑C to USB‑C (USB 2.0) for charging, USB‑A to USB‑C (USB 3.0) for connecting to PCs, and a small USB‑C to USB‑A adapter that also powers Google’s Quick Switch data migration from iOS or older Android phones.
Software: Early Nougat, Long Support, Opinionated Choices
The Pixel XL launched with Android 7.1 Nougat—newer than the LG V20’s 7.0—and a clear support roadmap: two years of OS updates (to October 2018) and at least three years of security patches or 18 months after it leaves the Google Store, whichever is longer. That was better than any Android OEM at launch, though still short of Apple’s four-year-plus cadence.
On top of AOSP, Google layered what is essentially a Google-branded skin: Pixel Launcher, Google apps replacing most stock AOSP tools, and tight integration with Google Assistant and services.
The Pixel Launcher revives the bottom-swipe app drawer and adds a persistent leftmost Google Now pane. A small “G” pill acts as a search handle, and long‑press app shortcuts mimic 3D Touch-style quick actions for supported apps (mostly Google’s at launch). The weather widget is pinned on the homescreen and can’t be moved or removed.
Android 7.1 brings proper split‑screen multitasking. Long‑pressing the Recents key splits the screen, but you can only pick the second app from already-running tasks, not your full app list. Portrait mode lets you freely resize the split; landscape is locked to 50/50. There’s also Quick Switch (double-tap Recents) to jump between the last two apps, and a pinning feature that locks a single app on screen until you unlock the phone—useful when handing it to someone else.
The fingerprint reader on the back, slightly recessed, is reasonably fast—faster than the iPhone 7’s, but slower than some Android rivals—and you can swipe down on it to pull down the notification shade. The notification area itself finally gets rearrangeable quick toggles, expandable with a second pull, and apps can now define their own tiles.
Notifications support inline replies for chat apps and extra contextual actions like share or archive. There’s also native call blocking and spam warnings on suspected spam calls, plus system-level call screening APIs that third-party apps can tap into.
Some Nougat features from the LG V20 are missing, like the easy app re‑installation option via Play Store. Themes are also absent despite Android itself supporting them since Marshmallow. Data Saver is likewise called out as missing in this build. The overall feel is fluid but oddly locked down—closer to an opinionated OEM skin than the old, open Nexus approach.
On the app side, Google strips out most AOSP apps and replaces them with Google Photos, Play Music, Allo, Duo, and so on. Photos is the default gallery and gets a big Pixel‑only perk: free full‑resolution cloud backup of photos and videos. Paired with “Free up space” and system-level Smart Storage (which can auto-delete older backed-up files after, say, 90 days), this mitigates the lack of microSD—especially on the cramped 32GB SKU.
Google Photos itself is heavily AI‑driven: powerful search by object, scene, or person; automatic creations like collages, panoramas, animations, and Rediscover This Day throwbacks; and easy sharing via links, including collaborative albums. As a video player, though, it’s barebones—no subtitles or advanced controls.
Play Music acts as both a local player and streaming service. The free tier gives you activity and mood-based “radio” mixes and podcasts, with caching controls for mobile data. The paid tier opens up on‑demand access to roughly 35 million tracks, offline downloads, and removes skip and ad limits. A 5‑band EQ with presets, plus bass boost and surround options when headphones are plugged in, rounds out audio features.
Messaging is split: Messenger handles SMS/MMS, Allo is the default IM app, and Duo is for simple one‑to‑one video calling. Hangouts is de‑emphasized, and Allo can’t do SMS, so you lose the unified inbox trick Hangouts used to offer. Allo and Duo each require separate setup tied to your phone number, which feels unnecessary.
The real software star is Google Assistant. It replaces the old Now voice interface with context‑aware, conversational-ish responses. You can ask for news briefings, sports scores, calendar summaries, local recommendations, translations, and basic control tasks like alarms and reminders. It’s smarter and more capable than Siri and other contemporaries in many areas, but still inconsistent with follow‑up questions and context chaining.
In chats via Allo, Assistant can be summoned as a contact to answer questions or surface info directly into your conversations. That’s a clever way to normalize talking to a bot without forcing voice interaction.
Camera: HDR+ Makes the Pixel XL Stand Out
If there’s one unambiguous strength of the Pixel XL, it’s the camera. On paper, the rear shooter looks recycled from the Nexus 6P/5X: a 12.3MP Sony IMX377 sensor, 1/2.3-inch size, 1.55µm pixels, 26mm equivalent lens at f/2.0, phase detection plus laser AF, and no optical image stabilization.
The magic is in HDR+. The phone constantly buffers nine underexposed frames while the camera app is open. When you tap the shutter, it stacks those frames to cut noise by roughly a factor of three, preserve highlight detail that a single exposure would blow out, and then tone‑maps the shadows back up while keeping color more realistic.
HDR+ Auto is enabled by default, and even if you turn it off, it reverts to Auto when you reopen the app. That’s intentional: for most shooting, HDR+ Auto is where you want to be. It slightly warms colors—likely a deliberate tuning choice—but delivers excellent detail, low noise, and very strong dynamic range. In extreme high-contrast scenes, manually forcing HDR+ On (rather than Auto) pulls even more detail out of shadows without weird color shifts.
In daylight, images are detailed and clean, with more restrained saturation than an LG V20 but still “consumer friendly.” The HDR+ pipeline keeps skies from blowing out between tree branches and makes elements like benches or foliage look more believable compared to non‑HDR shots.
Low light is where the approach really pays off. HDR+ Auto dramatically reduces visible noise without smearing fine detail, a balance many rivals struggle with. You can see clear differences between HDR+ off and Auto even at screen-view magnification.
The big hardware flaw is lens flare. Bright light sources in or near the frame can trigger large flare rings more often than on competing phones. It’s usually avoidable by reframing slightly, but it’s a real drawback. Google acknowledged it and aimed for a software mitigation, though that’s still a second-best fix for a physical optics issue.
The camera app UI itself is simple: quick toggles for flash, white balance, grids, HDR+, and timer; modes like Photo Sphere, panorama, and Lens Blur live in a side menu. Resolution and frame rate settings for video are oddly split: resolution is buried in the hamburger menu, while 30/60fps toggles float in the viewfinder for 1080p and 720p. Slomo lives in a separate mode with its own frame-rate selector (120fps or 240fps), and you’re expected to memorize that 120fps means 1080p and 240fps means 720p. It’s messy.
Panoramas are about 2,500px tall—so not full sensor height—but stitch cleanly and look competitive in real-world detail. The front camera is an 8MP f/2.4 unit carried over from the 6P. On paper it sounds basic; in reality it produces some of the best selfies of its time: sharp, accurate skin tones, and strong dynamic range. HDR+ again helps in both daylight and low light, preserving detail and controlling noise.
Video: Excellent Detail, Odd Choices
Video options cover 4K at 30fps; 1080p at 30, 60, or 120fps; and 720p at 30, 60, or 240fps. The UI for selecting these modes is inconsistent, but the output quality is strong where it counts.
4K clips are encoded at around 42Mbps—lower than the 48Mbps seen on the LG G5 and Galaxy S7, and below the iPhone 7’s ~46Mbps. Despite that, 2160p footage looks excellent: high detail, natural textures, accurate colors, and no aggressive over‑processing, with only a small amount of noise in complex areas like trees.
1080p video gets an unusually high 21.6Mbps bit rate versus the common ~17Mbps baseline. Visually, 1080p/30 footage mirrors the 4K profile with less fine detail. 1080p/60 trades a bit of detail for smoother motion, which is a standard compromise.
The big downside: all video modes record mono audio. For a flagship pitched as a premium device, dropping stereo capture is a strange and limiting choice.
Audio, Calls, and Everyday Use
Despite HTC’s involvement, the Pixel XL has only a single bottom-firing speaker, sitting behind one of the two symmetrical grilles flanking the USB‑C port. The other houses the primary microphone.
That single speaker is legitimately loud, scoring an “Excellent” rating in objective tests and outperforming several stereo-equipped competitors including iPhone 7 Plus, LG V20, Xperia XZ, and even HTC’s own 10. Volume is high and the audio stays clean at max output, making it a solid speakerphone and media device despite the mono layout.
On the telephony side, calling performance is bolstered by Wi‑Fi calling, VoLTE, and ViLTE (where supported), plus Google’s smart dialer tricks: you can search for business categories like “pizza” directly in the phone app and dial local results without saving contacts. Built-in spam detection and blocklists integrate with third-party apps that use your phone number as an ID.
Duo covers dead-simple, one‑to‑one video calling, trading complexity for accessibility, while Messenger offers a modern SMS/MMS experience with threaded conversations, embedded media, and stickers. Google Keyboard rounds the input story out with gesture typing, one‑handed mode, height controls, a Dvorak layout option, tons of themes, GIF search, and solid autocorrect.
Positioning and Competition: Nexus Spirit, Flagship Pricing
From launch, Google framed the Pixel XL as a full‑price flagship, not a subsidized developer special. That means it’s judged against top-tier Androids and iPhones of its era—and against cheaper, aggressively spec’d Chinese phones where available.
Camera and software support were its clearest wins. HDR+ makes the rear and front cameras extremely competitive, especially in low light. Guaranteed quick OS updates and multi‑year security support undercut every Android OEM at the time.
But Google didn’t deliver the “best everything” device it priced for. It didn’t have the largest battery or best endurance; the brightest or most color-accurate display; the fastest SoC; the loudest or richest speaker setup; or the strongest durability and water resistance.
The Galaxy S7 edge brought a brighter dual-curved AMOLED screen with better color accuracy, Always On Display, IP68 water resistance, microSD expansion, and an excellent Dual Pixel camera with blazing AF. It also shipped many of the multitasking features Nougat was just formalizing.
Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus added a dual-camera system with high-quality zoom and portrait-style bokeh, a wide-color-gamut display, waterproofing, stereo speakers, and a significantly faster in-house chipset—while matching or undercutting the Pixel XL’s price in many markets and offering far longer OS support (the iPhone 5, four years old at that point, still received iOS 10).
On the Android side, LG’s V20 targeted power users with a rugged metal chassis, a secondary always-on display, multiple rear cameras, quad DACs, and a richer implementation of Nougat’s features. Moto’s Z Force (and Z) pushed modularity and near-stock Android with a bigger battery and OIS on the main camera. In the US, budget-friendly flagships like the ZTE Axon 7, BlackBerry DTEK60, and LeEco Le Pro3 undercut the Pixel XL heavily while offering similar or better hardware on several fronts, including stereo speakers, higher-res cameras (often with OIS), and in LeEco’s case a fully clocked Snapdragon 821.
