Google Pixel Review: Google’s First ‘G Phone’ Aims High, Lands Mid-Pack

Pixel: From Nexus Underdog to Mainstream Contender

Google didn’t just launch a new phone with the Pixel; it tried to retire the entire Nexus idea. Instead of affordable, developer-friendly hardware, we got a premium, HTC-built flagship priced exactly like the iPhone 7: $650 in the US, plus $120 if you want the XL, and another $100 if you need 128GB instead of 32GB.

On paper, this is Google finally taking hardware seriously, pushing its own vision of Android and bundling in exclusive perks like Google Assistant and unlimited full‑resolution photo and video backups. In reality, the Pixel feels like a cautious first-gen product that leans heavily on software polish and camera tricks while quietly cutting corners that other 2016 flagships treated as standard.

Nexus fans expected the spiritual successor to the 5X and 6P. What they got instead was a more expensive phone that trades the old “developer reference device” identity for something much more conventional—and not always in a good way.

Design and Hardware: Nice Build, Safe Decisions

The Pixel is a 5-inch metal phone built by HTC, and it shows. The chassis feels closer to an HTC 10 cousin than a bold new design language. You get an “aerospace aluminum” body with a softer, less aggressive profile than HTC’s “military-grade” metal on the 10, and a distinctive glass panel on the back that houses the camera, flash, microphones, sensors, and the Pixel Imprint fingerprint reader.

In hand, it’s lighter than you’d expect and genuinely solid. The beveled edges and curved back are comfortable with no sharp spots, and the textured power button above the volume keys is easy to distinguish by feel. But the front is a different story: big top and bottom bezels around a 5-inch display, a single bottom-firing speaker, and an overall silhouette that’s extremely easy to confuse with an iPhone from across the room.

A 3.5mm headphone jack sits up top, USB‑C is on the bottom flanked by mirrored grilles (one speaker, one mic), and a single nanoSIM tray lives on the left side. There’s no dual‑SIM option—Google’s targeting the US first, where carriers still pretend two SIMs don’t exist. There’s also no microSD slot, so you’re locked into 32GB or 128GB with cloud storage doing the heavy lifting.

Water resistance? You get IP53. That’s “don’t stand in the rain too long,” not Galaxy S7‑grade IP68. For a phone priced like a full-fat flagship, that’s a miss.

Display, Battery, and Connectivity: Good Enough, Not Leader Class

The 5‑inch Pixel uses a Samsung-made 1080p AMOLED panel at 441ppi—basically Nexus 5 density in a 2016 body. At this size, QHD would be overkill for most people, so Full HD isn’t the problem. The bigger issue is that it’s not class-leading anywhere: it tops out around 445 nits of brightness while Galaxy and iPhone 7 panels push roughly 600 nits, and there’s no auto “sunlight boost” overdrive.

Color reproduction is pleasing but tuned more for pop than accuracy out of the box, with an average deltaE of 4.9 and a max of 11.6. Serious color work means diving into Developer Options and manually enabling sRGB mode, which tightens things up dramatically (average 2.2, max 4.5). Night Light is here with an aggressive amber tint and zero intensity control—helpful, but blunt.

Battery is a 2,770mAh non-removable cell. Historically, Nexus phones were battery underachievers, and the Pixel only half breaks that trend. Using USB Power Delivery (5V/3A, up to 15W), the included USB‑C charger brings the phone from 0 to 53% in 30 minutes. Endurance roughly matches the iPhone 7 (around a 61h-style score), but falls well short of Exynos Galaxy S7 territory (around 80h with a larger 3,000mAh pack and QHD display).

Google’s own ballpark claims—13 hours web, 13 hours video, 26 hours talk—don’t match independent numbers: closer to ~7:40 web, ~11:27 video, and ~20:43 talk. It’s stable and consistent, but nowhere near the battery monster some were hoping for after Nexus-era frustrations.

On the radio side, at least, the Pixel is properly modern. There’s a Snapdragon X12 modem with LTE Cat. 11 support (600/75Mbps, dropping to Cat. 9 on some carriers), Wi‑Fi a/b/g/n/ac with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS/GLONASS, NFC, and analog audio over USB‑C alongside the 3.5mm jack. VoLTE, Wi‑Fi calling, and Ultra HD Voice are supported when carriers cooperate, and Qualcomm’s Fluence Pro uses up to three mics for noise cancellation.

Performance and Software: Fast, Clean… and Weirdly Familiar

Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, but not the faster variant you might expect. Google’s using a downclocked version that essentially matches Snapdragon 820 speeds, just with better power and thermal behavior. CPU benchmarks line the Pixel up with other 820 devices like the HTC 10, OnePlus 3, and Snapdragon Galaxy S7; Exynos 8890 is about 27% ahead in multi-core tests, and Apple’s A10 Fusion in the iPhone 7 is on another planet in both single‑ and multi‑core.

GPU workloads actually favor the Pixel because it’s driving a 1080p panel. In demanding 3D tests, it edges out 820/QHD phones and even hangs close to the higher-clocked 821 in Xiaomi’s Mi 5s. Real-world gaming is what you’d expect: high frame rates, minimal drops, and quick cool-downs. Under load, the Pixel gets warm after a level of Plants vs Zombies 2 or a race in Asphalt 8, but cools quickly—unlike some 820 phones that love to stay toasty.

You get 4GB of RAM and UFS 2.0 storage with strong read speeds and decent writes. That’s enough to keep multitasking smooth and app loads quick, but not enough to pull clear ahead of the pack.

Software is where Google tries hardest to justify the Pixel price. It ships with Android 7.1 and the Pixel UI—a cleaner, slightly more streamlined take on stock Android. The Pixel Launcher drops the app drawer button in favor of a swipe-up gesture, adds long-press app shortcuts (a basic “3D Touch”-style menu), and swaps the permanent search bar for a small “G” tab that pulls out Google search and Now.

Nougat brings split-screen multitasking, quick app switching with a double-tap on the recents key, inline quick replies, and reconfigurable Quick Settings tiles (finally). smooth updates use dual system partitions so OTAs install in the background and just require a reboot—no more “optimizing apps” purgatory. Around 7GB of storage is eaten by the system and that A/B setup.

The Pixel Imprint fingerprint reader on the back is fast and reliable, and it supports a simple but excellent gesture: swipe down on the sensor to pull down the notification shade, once you enable it. Why that’s disabled by default is anyone’s guess.

Google Assistant makes its phone debut here, but it isn’t the clean break from Google Now that it should be. You can talk to it, get contextual info, query nearby restaurants, convert currency, handle offline voice actions like toggling radios and sending SMS, and generally get a more conversational, Siri‑style experience. But some tasks still fall back to the older Google Now/Search stack: Assistant literally tells you “I can’t do that yet” for things like tracking packages or controlling certain smart home gear, even though other Google products can.

In short: the software experience is clean, modern, and polished—and also incomplete in places where it really shouldn’t be for a flagship “G Phone.”

Camera and Media: HDR+ Carries Hard

Here’s where the Pixel actually earns some of its hype. On paper, the rear camera isn’t special: a 12.3MP Sony IMX377 sensor (1/2.3″, 1.55µm pixels) with an f/2.0 lens and phase‑detect plus laser autofocus, basically the same hardware as the Nexus 5X/6P. There’s no optical image stabilization, which is a bold omission in a year when rivals were centering their marketing around it.

The difference is HDR+. Google keeps a rolling buffer of nine underexposed frames every time the camera is open. When you hit the shutter, those get stacked into one image with dramatically reduced noise, better dynamic range, and richer color, particularly in high-contrast scenes and low light. Processing happens in the background, so shot-to-shot time doesn’t really suffer.

In Auto HDR+ mode, the Pixel churns out consistently sharp images with warm, punchy colors and excellent detail. Shadow noise is cleaned up aggressively, highlights are protected, and dynamic range is right up near the top of the 2016 pack. Manually forcing HDR+ ON pushes things even further for extreme contrast, at the cost of longer exposure times and a higher risk of blur if you’re not steady.

Low light is where HDR+ really flexes. Turn it off, and you get noisy, muddy shots that look like any other mid‑high‑end phone. Turn it on, and scenes brighten, noise drops hard, and color holds together surprisingly well. It’s not flawless—sometimes HDR+ introduces odd tints (greenish casts in some conditions) or brings back noise when it stretches too far—but overall, this is easily one of the best low‑light shooters of its generation.

The flip side: lens flare. The Pixel’s optics are noticeably prone to catching flare when bright lights are in or just outside the frame. Google has acknowledged the issue and plans to mitigate it algorithmically in HDR+ Auto, but relying on post-processing to “cancel out” a hardware quirk is a band‑aid, not a fix.

Panoramas are decent but don’t benefit from HDR+. Resolution tops out around 2,500px tall, stitching is generally well hidden, and exposure blending is solid. The front 8MP f/2.4 camera—borrowed from the Nexus 6P—delivers some of the best selfies of its time, especially with HDR+ Auto: sharp detail, accurate skin tones, and better-than-usual dynamic range.

Video is flexible: 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 30/60fps, and slow motion at 120fps (1080p) or 240fps (720p). 4K clips sit around 42Mbps, below Galaxy S7 and LG G5 bitrates, but still look very good: clean detail and natural colors without nasty over-sharpening. 1080p @ 30fps uses about 21.6Mbps and looks similarly strong; 60fps trades some detail for smoothness.

The letdown: all video is recorded with mono audio, despite multiple mics. For a premium 2016 flagship, that’s just lazy.

On the audio side, the bottom speaker is loud, with a wider bass range than many rivals and minimal distortion even at max volume. Lab tests rate it “Very Good” in loudness, beating some stereo setups like iPhone 7 Plus, Xperia XZ, and even HTC’s own 10. But you can still muffle it easily with your palm in landscape.

Wired audio output into an external amp is excellent: clean signal, high volume, and reference-grade measurements. Plugging in headphones drops loudness to just above average and introduces some stereo crosstalk and tiny distortion—nothing tragic, but no longer best‑in‑class.

Services, Extras, and the Value Problem

Google Photos is the default gallery and a big selling point here. On the Pixel, full‑resolution photo and video backups are free and unlimited; on other phones, that kind of storage hits your Drive quota. Combined with the “Free up space” option (which deletes local copies once they’re backed up) and Smart Storage for clearing older files after 90 days, the 32GB model becomes at least somewhat livable.

Photos’ AI search is legitimately powerful. You can pull up images by keyword (“beach”, “selfies”), by person, and let the Assistant auto‑generate collages, panoramas, GIFs, and recap videos—plus nostalgic “Rediscover this day” flashbacks. Sharing via links and collaborative albums work across platforms.

For music, Google Play Music handles both local files and streaming. The Pixel comes with a 3‑month trial of Play Music plus YouTube Red, which buys you ad‑free YouTube and full streaming access on top of radio-style playlists for free users. There’s a basic 5‑band EQ, presets, and extra options (bass boost and surround) when you plug in headphones.

Messaging is split: Google Messenger covers SMS/MMS with modern features like inline media, stickers, and GIF insertion via Google Keyboard; Allo is pre‑installed as the instant messaging app and Assistant host, while Duo handles 1:1 video calls based on phone numbers rather than Google accounts. There’s also ViLTE support where the network and recipient device allow it.

The real frustration isn’t any single omission, though. It’s the value equation. The Pixel doesn’t have the brightest screen, the fastest silicon, the biggest battery, the strongest water resistance, or the most futureproof I/O. It’s single‑SIM only, lacks stereo recording, ships without headphones, and is locked down tighter on Verizon models where you can’t unlock the bootloader.

Meanwhile, you’re paying iPhone money. In 2016, the Galaxy S7 gave you QHD, a larger 3,000mAh cell, wireless charging, IP68 water resistance, microSD, and a competitive camera. HTC’s own 10 offered OIS on both cameras, expandable storage, and a QHD display. Apple’s iPhone 7 added stereo speakers, a brighter wide-color display, and far longer software support cycles.

What the Pixel really proves is that Google can finally ship a truly polished Android experience with none of the Nexus‑era bugs, wakelocks, and memory leaks. But as a product for paying customers—not developers—it feels like Google jumped straight to iPhone pricing before it earned iPhone‑class hardware.
