Samsung has shipped millions of Galaxy S22 units worldwide, yet this is one of the quietest flagship upgrades the company has done in years.
That’s not automatically a bad thing.
The base Galaxy S22 is the smallest, cheapest member of the S22 trio, and on paper it barely moves the needle over the S21. But between the new 50MP main camera, 4nm chipsets, better display tech and Samsung’s long-term software promise, there’s more going on here than the “boring” label suggests.
I’ve gone through the specs, Samsung’s own messaging, and extensive testing data on the vanilla S22. Here’s where this compact flagship still inspires confidence—and where you should keep your expectations in check.
Design and Build: Compact, Premium, Slippery
The obvious headline is size. At 146 x 70.6 x 7.6mm and 167g (168g for the mmWave model), the S22 is genuinely compact by 2020s standards. Compared to the S21’s 151.7 x 71.2 x 7.9mm and 170g, this is a noticeable shrink in the hand, not just on a spec sheet.
Samsung dumps the S21’s plastic back and goes full “glass sandwich” again: Gorilla Glass Victus+ on both front and back, with an enlarged “Armor Aluminum” frame tying it together. Build quality is excellent and the chassis has essentially no flex. You still get IP68 protection, so this is the classic premium Samsung tank—just smaller.
The new design is flatter overall but still not iPhone-flat. The frame gently slopes instead of having sharp edges, which looks good but hurts grip. The S22 is slippery, and the matte-ish finish on the frame is a grease magnet, which makes it even worse in day-to-day use. The flat back panel, also Victus+, stays cleaner and feels more secure, but if you’re clumsy, budget for a case.
Camera housing is simplified versus the S21’s wrap-around metal. The island now just ends where the frame begins, making the phone less visually distinctive but also less busy. Color options are classic Samsung: Phantom Black and Phantom White, plus Green and Pink Gold as standard shades, and four Samsung.com exclusives (Graphite, Cream, Sky Blue, Violet) with different accent combos.
This is a premium, dense, well-balanced compact phone. Just don’t expect it to be grippy.
Display: Still an OLED Leader, Just Not the Brightest S22
The S22’s 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X stays at 1080p+ and 120Hz, and Samsung is still the OLED boss. But panel tech subtly splits the lineup: the S22+ and S22 Ultra get higher peak brightness and newer OLED materials (commonly referred to as M12), while the S22 likely sticks with an M11 substrate.
In real terms, the S22 hits around 982 nits peak in auto brightness—well above the S21 and roughly in iPhone 13 Pro territory. That’s not in the same league as the 1,750-nit S22+ and Ultra, but it’s still one of the brightest compact phones tested to date. With the new “Extra brightness” toggle enabled on manual brightness, the S22 can reach about 757 nits; turn it off and it tops out around 465 nits indoors.
Refresh rate is where Samsung’s marketing got messy. Only the S22 Ultra uses LTPO 2.0; the S22 and S22+ are LTPS. Officially they support 48–120Hz, but the panel’s driver can accept data updates equivalent to as low as 10Hz. In practice, the S22’s display drops as low as 24Hz on a static screen while the UI rendering itself can go all the way down to 1fps to save power.
The behavior is smart overall: 120Hz while you’re interacting, 60Hz for most moving on-screen content, 24Hz for static screens, and matching frame rates for video playback (24/30/60Hz depending on content, HDR included). High-refresh gaming works up to 120fps, and Samsung’s GPU Watch overlay plus the Perf Z plugin can verify real frame rates.
Color-wise, Samsung is in its comfort zone. Vivid mode targets DCI-P3 and comes close, though it’s a bit cool by default; one notch warmer on the slider lands you in very accurate territory. Natural mode nails sRGB. You get HDR10/HDR10+/HLG support and Widevine L1, so services like Netflix happily serve 1080p HDR.
Vision Booster, Samsung’s new tone-mapping feature, tweaks contrast and colors in bright light using ambient sensor data. It helps outdoor visibility a bit compared to the S21, but this is a “nice bonus” feature, not some magic sunlight eraser.
Bottom line: even with slightly older panel tech than its siblings, the S22’s screen is bright, color-accurate, and intelligently managed. You’re not being short-changed in any meaningful way unless you live under direct sun.
Performance and Connectivity: Exynos vs Snapdragon, With Caveats
The S22 ships with two main chipset flavors: Exynos 2200 in Europe and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in most other regions, plus a separate Snapdragon mmWave variant for the US. All use 4nm processes and an Armv9 CPU layout (1x Cortex-X2, 3x Cortex-A710, 4x Cortex-A510) with slightly different clocks.
On the Exynos 2200 side, the big story is GPU: the Xclipse 920 using AMD’s RDNA2 architecture, with support for features like ray tracing and variable rate shading. In theory this is a big step, but in practice you need game developers—or drivers—to actually use that hardware. So far the hardware is promising, while the ecosystem is basically in “wait and see” mode.
CPU performance is very much flagship-class. Benchmarks with the latest firmware (after Samsung’s throttling controversy fix) show strong burst performance, often beating earlier-tested S22+ and Ultra units. Multiplayer games and heavy apps aren’t going to choke this phone.
The Xclipse 920 GPU, though, is still a bit inconsistent. GPU scores are high overall, but they don’t decisively beat last year’s Exynos 2100 + Mali-G78 setup, and behavior can be shaky under some synthetic loads. In stress tests, the S22 ramps down gradually rather than nose-diving, which is the right way to manage thermals—but you do lose a solid chunk of peak GPU power over prolonged use.
Thermally, the compact body doesn’t help, yet the phone avoids “ouch” levels of heat. The surface gets toasty under extended load but not uncomfortable. More importantly, frame rate drops are more gradual than jarring, which matters more than headline benchmark numbers.
Connectivity is fully flagship-grade: dual SIM + eSIM (though no triple standby), SA/NSA/Sub‑6 5G on all variants, mmWave on the specific US model, Wi‑Fi 6e, Bluetooth 5.2 with LE, NFC, dual-band GPS (L1+L5), and the usual sensor suite including barometer. What you don’t get: Ultra Wideband (UWB) on the base S22, legacy MST, ANT+, 3.5mm jack, or a microSD slot.
Samsung advertises USB 3.2 speeds on the Type‑C port, but real-world transfers in testing never approached the 5Gbps of a 3.2 Gen 1 link, even with fast drives and cables. You do get video output over USB‑C plus DeX, which is still the most mature desktop-style Android environment.
If you have the choice between Exynos and Snapdragon, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is still the safer, more consistent bet. But realistically, most buyers are locked to whatever their region gets, and Exynos 2200 is plenty fast with room for software tuning.
Battery and Charging: Smaller Cell, Smarter Management, Average Results
Here’s where the compromises show. Samsung shrank the S22’s battery from 4,000mAh (S21) to 3,700mAh, betting that 4nm silicon and smarter display behavior would compensate. They didn’t.
In a standardized mixed-use test, the S22 lands at an 85‑hour endurance rating. That’s fine for a compact flagship, but it’s a step back from the S21. Screen-on numbers for web and video are acceptable and even improved in some web scenarios, but standby—especially 3G standby on Exynos—is weak.
There’s also some weirdness around automatic refresh rate during video playback. With adaptive refresh enabled, the S22 correctly drops to 24Hz for 24fps content, yet this can consume more power than simply running the same test at 60Hz. That points to either app compatibility quirks or system-level tuning issues. In other words, there’s still optimization headroom.
Charging remains capped at 25W via USB Power Delivery with PPS, while the S22+ and Ultra advertise 45W. In reality, all three S22 models hover around “a bit over an hour” from 0–100%, regardless of which Samsung charger (25W or 45W) you use. Expect about 60% in 30 minutes and a full top-up shortly after the one-hour mark.
No charger in the box, obviously. You get a short USB‑C cable, SIM pin, and paperwork inside a slim recycled paper box printed with soy ink. The environmental angle is more sincere than most, but it also conveniently cuts costs.
If you’re coming from something like an S10e or an older compact phone, the S22’s endurance is acceptable and charge times are predictable. But anyone hoping for a battery upgrade over the S21 is going to be disappointed.
Cameras: New 50MP Main, Familiar Ultra‑Wide, Smarter Telephoto
The base S22 shares its camera hardware with the S22+: a new 50MP main, a new 10MP 3x telephoto, and a carried-over 12MP ultra‑wide and 10MP selfie.
The main sensor is Samsung’s 50MP ISOCELL GN5 (1/1.56″), using Tetracell (Quad‑Bayer) binning down to 12MP output (4000 x 3000). Samsung layers in ISOCELL 2.0, which refines the reflective structures between color filters to improve light sensitivity, theoretically helping low-light shots. The lens adds “Super Clear Glass” to cut flare in dim, point-light scenes.
Daylight 12MP shots from the main camera are solid: very good detail, wide dynamic range, and colors that strike a decent balance between realistic and punchy. However, softness is an issue, especially in shadow regions, and Samsung leans on sharpening to compensate. Noise is visible in some surfaces where you’d expect that typical Samsung clean look.
A more worrying detail is sample variation. Some S22 units (including at least one S22+) show pronounced corner softness that looks a lot like lens inconsistency. The S22 unit covered here is less affected than that S22+ “lemon,” but the fact that inconsistency exists at all means buyers should test their cameras early and RMA if detail looks off.
Compared side by side, plenty of people may actually prefer the older 12MP main cam from the S21. It’s not that the S22 is bad—it’s that the upgrade is smaller and more nuanced than the 50MP number suggests.
You can force full 50MP shots, but they’re only slightly more detailed than the 12MP ones and still suffer from softness in places. They also introduce moiré artifacts on fine patterns. A new “Detail Enhancer” toggle helps by stacking multiple frames with AI processing; that mode finally delivers legitimately sharper 50MP shots that justify the resolution bump, at the cost of a few capture seconds per photo.
The 10MP 3x telephoto (about 70mm equiv.) is the quiet MVP. It outputs 12MP upscaled images like Samsung’s been doing for years, but the base detail is high, sharpening is more restrained than on the main cam, and noise is low. Color matching with the main camera is excellent. Even 10x and 30x digital zoom shots are surprisingly usable, with Samsung’s algorithms clearly doing a lot of “fill in the lines” work.
Portrait mode from the main camera is strong: accurate edge detection, good subject separation, and pleasant blur. Telephoto portraits are usable but softer and often feel too tight unless you’re standing farther back than usual.
The 12MP ultra‑wide (13mm, 120° FOV, f/2.2, fixed focus) is unchanged from the S21. That means decent sharpness for an ultra‑wide, some expected frame-wide softness, mild noise, and generally well-matched color with the main camera. There’s automatic distortion correction by default, with a toggle to disable if you want that barrel look.
The 10MP Dual Pixel AF selfie camera is also a carryover and still one of Samsung’s better moves: detailed, sharp 4K video and stills, good dynamic range, and reliable autofocus even in low light. Color science is a bit different from the rear cameras by design, and you can bias toward warmer tones with a setting if you prefer.
Nightography and Low‑Light Video: Good, Not Magic
Samsung’s marketing department coined “Nightography” for the S22 line, bundling improvements like the new lens coating, sensor tweaks, Night mode stacking, and the Auto FPS video feature under one buzzword.
In actual low light, the main camera does well. Detail and dynamic range remain strong, and the slightly aggressive processing that feels over the top in daytime shots makes more sense here. Noise is present but controlled, and lights are handled competently.
Switching to 50MP at night doesn’t help much. Detail gains are small and processing quirks become more obvious. Detail Enhancer can occasionally bring back more fine textures, but it’s inconsistent and can also oversmooth surfaces or clip highlights. For low light, you’re better off in the standard 12MP mode.
Scene Optimizer is generally unobtrusive and smart, automatically deciding when to kick in Night mode. Manual Night mode bumps exposure time to around 3–4 seconds on the main cam, with a visible payoff: brighter shadows, better highlight control, and more perceived detail, at the cost of a more processed look.
The telephoto behaves as you’d expect: in very low light the phone often falls back to cropping the main sensor instead of using the 3x module. When the telephoto does engage, it produces respectable low-light shots with decent detail but higher noise. Night mode helps a lot here, cleaning up softness and improving face clarity in tele-portraits.
The ultra‑wide remains the weak link at night. Without Night mode, many scenes are simply too dark and mushy. With Night mode on, things improve dramatically—more shadow detail, less noise, more usable shots for social media—but don’t expect miracles.
Selfies at night are a strong point: the front camera holds onto facial texture, keeps noise in check, and offers optional Night mode that consistently helps without obviously ruining images.
Video is where Samsung’s low-light pipeline really flexes. The S22 can shoot up to 8K@24fps on the main camera, but the visual difference versus 4K is marginal while file sizes explode. 8K is more of a spec sheet trophy than a practical upgrade.
4K from the main camera in low light is properly flagship-grade: good detail, very strong dynamic range, and noticeable real-time HDR stacking. Noise is well controlled and light sources stay readable. The ultra‑wide and telephoto both handle 4K decently too, though they’re clearly a step down: ultrawide is softer with narrower dynamic range, telephoto is sharp but a bit darker.
Auto FPS is Samsung’s attempt to make video smarter at night. With it enabled, the phone can drop frame rates from 60 to 30, then 24 (and supposedly 15) based on ambient light, while running a “Super Night Solution” stacking process at 24fps and below. In testing, you can see clips switch between 60, 30 and 24fps in a predictable way as light drops, but the feature is hard to quantify in terms of quality gains. It’s a potentially useful lever, but not something to buy the phone for.
Stabilization works across all cameras, including at 8K on the main cam. The basic stabilization is already good enough that Samsung’s more aggressive 1080p “Super Steady” mode is only really needed for active movement.
Software, Extras and Long‑Term Outlook
The S22 ships with One UI 4.1 on top of Android 12. It’s a minor evolution over One UI 4 on the S21 line, so anyone already on a recent Samsung flagship will feel right at home.
The genuinely big software story is Samsung’s update policy: four OS upgrades and five years of security patches for 2021 and 2022 flagships, including the S21 line, S21 FE, Z Fold3, and Z Flip3. For Android users who care about longevity and don’t want to jump to iOS, this is a serious reason to stick with Samsung.
Feature-wise, One UI 4.1 brings the usual mix of heavy customization and useful extras. You get:
- Android 12-style Color Palettes that theme system accents and icons based on your wallpaper.
- An improved Privacy Dashboard for permission tracking, camera/mic toggles, and clipboard access alerts.
- Smart Widgets that stack multiple widgets into one slot.
- A flexible Always-On Display with clock and image options.
- DeX (wired and wireless), which still leads the pack for desktop-style phone use.
- Link to Windows integration for notifications, calls, and app streaming on PC.
- “Continue apps on other devices” for Samsung browser and Notes across devices signed into the same account.
- Edge Panels, Game Launcher, Samsung’s Gallery and Internet apps, plus extras like Object Eraser for removing subjects, shadows, and reflections from photos.
Most preloaded Samsung, Microsoft, and Google apps can be uninstalled or at least disabled. It’s not bloat-free, but it’s manageable.
Biometrics are handled by an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and camera-based face unlock. The fingerprint reader is as good as ultrasonic gets—accurate and reasonably quick—but still not quite as snappy as the best optical readers. Face unlock is convenient but less secure.
One small red flag hiding in user feedback: one owner mentions using an S22 for three years and running into a black spot on the display and One UI issues after an update to Android 16. We don’t have enough data to call this a pattern, but it’s a reminder that long update windows are only as good as the quality of those updates.
On the sustainability side, Samsung is recycling ocean-bound plastics for internal button brackets and S Pen parts, and using more post-consumer materials in small components. These are tiny pieces in a very big production run, but scaled up they’re not meaningless.
Price, Positioning and Who the S22 Is Really For
The Galaxy S22 launched at essentially the same price as the S21: around $800 / €850 / £770 for 128GB and $850 / €900 / £820 for 256GB. For a flagship in a messy supply chain era, holding the line on MSRP is an achievement. Street prices have since dipped in many regions, which only helps its case.
Crucially, Samsung’s segmentation is clean. The S22+ mainly adds size, a 4,500mAh battery, 45W charging support, UWB, and a brighter panel; the experience is otherwise nearly identical. For most buyers, the real decision is size and budget, not features.
The S22 Ultra is a different beast entirely: essentially the resurrected Note with S Pen housing and a far more advanced camera system. If you don’t need those, the vanilla S22 feels like the true “default” Galaxy flagship.
Against older Samsungs, the S21 and S21 FE are strong value options if you can live with a larger footprint and last-gen silicon. Both now benefit from Samsung’s extended update promise.
Outside Samsung’s world, real compact Android flagships are rare. Asus Zenfone 8 and Sony Xperia 5 III scratch that itch with different trade-offs, but they’re niche compared to a Galaxy or an iPhone. Speaking of which, the iPhone 13 Pro is the natural cross-platform comparison: similar size, premium build, strong cameras, long support. The S22 compares as a more incremental Android answer rather than a spec monster.
So where does that leave the Galaxy S22 in 2025 and beyond? It’s a compact, premium, fairly conservative flagship that:
- Improves display brightness, camera flexibility, and long-term software support over the S21.
- Backslides on battery capacity and doesn’t fully cash in on its fancy GPU hardware yet.
- Keeps pricing and feature trade-offs grounded instead of chasing wild spec-sheet headlines.
If you want a reliable, small-ish Android flagship with long software life and don’t care about bleeding-edge charging speeds or experimental hardware, the S22 still makes sense—especially at reduced prices.
Just go in with calibrated expectations: this is the safe choice, not the exciting one.
