Unofficial LineageOS 17.1 Brings Android 10 to Galaxy S8 and Note 8

Can a three-year-old flagship really get a new life with an unofficial Android 10 ROM, or is it just pain disguised as an update?

Samsung Moves On, But the Hardware Hasn’t

Samsung has been busy pushing Android 10 to its more recent flagships. The Galaxy S10 series was first in line with the One UI 2.0 beta back in November, and the Galaxy S9 and S9+ just picked up their stable Android 10 builds.

If you’re on a Galaxy S8, S8+, or Galaxy Note 8, you’re not on that list. None of these devices appear in Samsung’s One UI 2.0 update schedule, and that lines up with the company’s standard two-year major update window. The S8 and Note 8 families have already seen two big Android version jumps during their supported lifespan.

So from Samsung’s side, Android 10 for these phones is effectively off the table. For a lot of users, though, the hardware is still fast enough and the displays are more than good enough for daily use. Dropping $800+ on a new flagship just to get Android 10 isn’t exactly a compelling proposition for everyone.

Enter LineageOS 17.1: Android 10, Unofficially

For those users, there is another path. XDA Recognized Developer Stricted has released unofficial ports of LineageOS 17.1 for three Exynos-based devices:

  • Samsung Galaxy S8
  • Samsung Galaxy S8+
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8

LineageOS 17.1 is based on Android 10, so flashing these builds lets you experience the newer OS version even though Samsung has walked away. This isn’t a vendor-skinned build like One UI 2.0; it’s the LineageOS take on Android, which is much closer to what you’d expect from a more stock-style UI.

These builds are targeted at users who are comfortable with custom ROMs and who understand the trade-offs: you get newer software, but you lose the official software support and warranty safety net. And in this case, there are also some major functional gaps you have to accept.

What’s Broken: The Dealbreakers You Need to Know

These LineageOS 17.1 builds are explicitly described as very early. That’s not just a label; there are several serious issues that affect daily usability:

  • The signal indicator is broken. You may still have cellular connectivity, but you won’t reliably see your signal status from the system UI.
  • Video recording in the stock camera app doesn’t work. If you rely on your S8 or Note 8 for video capture, this alone can rule out the ROM.
  • Bluetooth headphones can’t be used for listening to music. For anyone who has already moved on from wired audio, this is a major setback.
  • Screen Cast functionality is broken. If you mirror your phone’s display to a TV or monitor, you’ll lose that option for now.
  • SELinux is in Permissive mode. From a security standpoint, this is significantly weaker than Enforcing, reducing protection against certain classes of exploits and misbehaving apps.

Individually, some of these could be tolerable depending on your usage. Taken together, they clearly mark this as a ROM for testers and enthusiasts, not for someone who wants a rock-solid daily driver. If you need your phone to “just work” for calls, multimedia, and casting, you’ll want to stay far away from this build for now.

Requirements: Exynos Models Only, and an Unlocked Bootloader

Before you even think about flashing, there are strict hardware and configuration requirements.

First, these LineageOS 17.1 builds are intended only for Exynos models of the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8. Trying to flash them to incompatible hardware is a fast way to brick a device or end up in recovery loops.

Second, you need an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery such as TWRP installed. The ROM is flashed via that recovery, not via any official Samsung update tool. If you’re still on a completely stock setup and have never touched Odin or TWRP before, you’ll have a learning curve ahead of you.

There’s also a regional restriction embedded in Samsung’s own policies. Unlocking the bootloader is only possible on:

  • Exynos variants of the Galaxy S8 / S8+ / Note 8
  • Snapdragon variants purchased outside the U.S.

All Snapdragon-based Galaxy phones sold in the U.S. come with bootloaders that can’t be unlocked through official means. That means most U.S. buyers are effectively locked out of this LineageOS route.

Who Should Consider Flashing This ROM?

With all the caveats out of the way, there is still a clear audience for these unofficial LineageOS builds.

If your S8, S8+, or Note 8 is a secondary device, and you’re comfortable with the possibility of bugs, breakage, or even having to reflash back to stock firmware, this ROM gives you a way to experiment with Android 10. You can get a feel for newer APIs, UI behavior, and features in a leaner environment than Samsung’s stock software.

If your phone is your main communications and media device, the broken Bluetooth audio, screen cast, and camera video recording are serious red flags. Android 10 isn’t a small visual refresh; it brings under-the-hood changes that can affect how apps behave, and coupling that with early-ROM bugs just multiplies the risks for a daily driver.

The security angle also matters. Running SELinux in Permissive mode weakens one of Android’s core security layers. For a lab phone or a test device, that might be acceptable. For a phone carrying personal messages, banking apps, and sensitive data, you’re making a trade-off that you should be fully aware of.

How to Try It (If You Still Want To)

If those limitations don’t scare you off, flashing is the usual custom ROM process. You’ll need to:

  1. Confirm you have a compatible Exynos model.
  2. Ensure your bootloader is unlocked.
  3. Install a custom recovery such as TWRP.
  4. Follow the detailed flashing instructions provided alongside the ROM downloads.

Stricted has provided separate download links and guides for the Galaxy S8/S8+ and the Galaxy Note 8. Sticking closely to those instructions is important; skipping steps or improvising can easily lead to boot failures or data loss.

As always with custom ROMs, backing up your data is non-negotiable. The flashing process can require a full wipe, and early builds can sometimes force you to wipe again or revert to stock firmware if a bug makes the phone unusable.

The Bigger Picture: Community Support vs. Vendor Support

These LineageOS 17.1 ports highlight the gap between hardware capability and vendor support timelines. The Galaxy S8 and Note 8 series still have more than enough power for typical tasks, yet official software support has effectively ended.

Community projects like this provide a way to extend functional life for people who are willing to tinker and live with early bugs. For everyone else, this is more of a proof of concept: yes, Android 10 can run on these phones, but not in a state that matches the stability and integration of Samsung’s own firmware.

If you’re still happy with your S8 or Note 8 on its current software and you need reliability more than new features, staying on stock is the rational choice. If you have a spare device and a high tolerance for bugs, LineageOS 17.1 gives you something new to play with while Samsung focuses on its newer flagships.
