Introduction
For years, the Android lock screen was functional and forgettable. A clock. Notifications. A PIN pad. You swiped, you unlocked, you moved on.
iOS 16 (2022) made the lock screen a canvas for personalization — custom clocks, widgets, color theming. Android’s lock screen, by comparison, was static and dull.
Android 14 (2023) responded with a lock screen picker that matched and exceeded iOS. Customizable clocks, color theming, shortcut choices, and Material You dynamic color integration made the lock screen personal for the first time.
What Changed
Android 14’s lock screen picker lets users customize:
- Clock style: 9 clock styles with customizable color and size
- Shortcuts: Two shortcut slots (bottom left and right) for Camera, Flashlight, Do Not Disturb, Google Home, QR Scanner, and more
- Color: Material You dynamic color or custom color selection
- Monochrome theme: Optional black-and-white aesthetic
The picker is a single screen — simpler than iOS 16’s multi-step customization process. Changes preview in real time.
Why It Matters
The lock screen is the most-seen screen on any phone. You see it dozens of times a day. Making it personal — with your colors, your clock style, your shortcuts — transforms it from a gatekeeper to a reflection of the user.
Combined with lock screen notifications (Lollipop), always-on display, and the Pixel’s At a Glance widget, Android 14’s lock screen is the best it’s ever been.
