Introduction
Android tablets have been declared dead at least five times. The Motorola Xoom was supposed to be the iPad killer — it wasn’t. The Nexus 7 was supposed to prove that small, cheap tablets could work — it did, briefly, then Google abandoned the form factor. The Pixel C was supposed to be the premium Android tablet — it launched with a buggy software keyboard and no real tablet apps.
And yet, in 2025, Android tablets are having their best moment in a decade. The Pixel Tablet, Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, and OnePlus Pad are genuinely good. Android 12L and 14 have proper large-screen UIs. Foldables have blurred the line between phone and tablet. The category that Google neglected for years is finally getting attention.
This is the story of Android tablet design — every attempt, every failure, and what finally worked.
Phase 1: The Honeycomb Experiment (2011)
Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Android’s first tablet OS was Honeycomb — a tablet-only fork that ran parallel to Gingerbread on phones. It was designed by Matias Duarte’s team in eight months and introduced the holographic UI, Action Bar, fragments, and hardware acceleration.
The Motorola Xoom was the launch device: 10.1-inch 1280×800 LCD, Nvidia Tegra 2, 1 GB RAM, $599 (Wi-Fi) / $799 (Verizon 3G). It was heavy (730g), buggy, and had fewer than 100 tablet-optimized apps at launch. The iPad 2 outsold it roughly 30-to-1.
Honeycomb’s design was ambitious — the combined status/navigation bar at the bottom, the holographic blue accents, the card-based UI — but the hardware was underpowered and the app ecosystem was nonexistent. Google kept the source code closed, infuriating the open-source community. Honeycomb was a prototype shipped to production, and it failed.
But its design DNA — fragments, Action Bar, hardware acceleration — became the foundation of Ice Cream Sandwich and every Android tablet that followed.
Phase 2: The Nexus 7 Era (2012–2013)

Google changed strategy: instead of competing with the iPad on size and price, compete on value. The Nexus 7 was a 7-inch tablet priced at $199 — half the cost of an iPad mini. It ran stock Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, had a Tegra 3 processor, and was fast, well-built, and genuinely good.
The Nexus 7 sold an estimated 4.5–6 million units, making it Google’s best-selling Nexus device. It proved that Android tablets could succeed if the price was right.
The 2013 Nexus 7 refined the formula: 1920×1200 display, Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2 GB RAM, $229. It was the best small Android tablet ever made and remains a beloved device among enthusiasts.
The Nexus 10 (2012) was Samsung-built, with a 2560×1600 display that was sharper than the iPad’s Retina display. It was a good tablet that nobody bought — the $399 price was too close to the iPad, and the 10-inch Android tablet market was already dominated by Samsung’s own Galaxy Tab line.
Phase 3: The Premium Pivot (2014–2015)
Nexus 9, Pixel C
Google tried to go premium. The Nexus 9 (2014) was an 8.9-inch tablet with a 4:3 aspect ratio (matching the iPad), Tegra K1 processor, and a $399 price. It was built by HTC and suffered from light bleed, mushy buttons, and inconsistent build quality. The software — Android 5.0 Lollipop — was buggy. The Nexus 9 was a critical and commercial disappointment.
The Pixel C (2015) was Google’s first self-designed tablet. It had a 10.2-inch 2560×1800 display, Nvidia Tegra X1, 3 GB RAM, and a magnetic keyboard dock. The hardware was beautiful — aluminum unibody, clean lines, premium feel. The software was Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which had no meaningful tablet optimizations. The keyboard dock used Bluetooth instead of a physical connector, introducing latency. The Pixel C was a great laptop replacement that wasn’t a great tablet and wasn’t a great laptop.
Google stopped making tablets after the Pixel C. The conventional wisdom was that Android tablets were dead.
Phase 4: Samsung Carries the Torch (2016–2021)
While Google abandoned tablets, Samsung kept building them. The Galaxy Tab S series — S2, S3, S4, S5e, S6, S7, S8 — improved every year. Samsung’s DeX mode turned tablets into desktop-like environments with windowed apps, a taskbar, and keyboard/mouse support.
Samsung also pioneered the foldable-as-tablet: the Galaxy Z Fold series (2019–present) blurred the line between phone and tablet, with a 7.6-inch inner display that functioned as a small tablet when unfolded.
By 2021, Samsung was the only company taking Android tablets seriously. Google’s neglect had ceded the category to Apple, and the iPad dominated premium tablets with 55%+ market share.
Phase 5: The Android 12L Revival (2022–Present)
Android 12L, Pixel Tablet, Galaxy Tab S9, OnePlus Pad
Google finally acknowledged that Android tablets existed. Android 12L (2022) was a large-screen-optimized release with:
- Taskbar: A persistent dock at the bottom for quick app switching
- Two-column layouts: Settings, notifications, and launcher adapted to wider screens
- Improved letterboxing: Apps that didn’t support tablets were displayed with better scaling
- Drag and drop: System-wide drag and drop between apps in split-screen
The Pixel Tablet (2023) was Google’s return to tablets. It had a 10.95-inch 2560×1600 LCD, Tensor G2, 8 GB RAM, and a magnetic speaker dock that turned it into a smart display. It wasn’t a flagship — the 60Hz display and mid-range processor were compromises — but it was a competent, well-designed tablet that showed Google was serious again.
Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 series (2023) was the best Android tablet hardware ever: 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, IP68 water resistance, S Pen included. One UI 5.1’s tablet features — DeX, multi-window, taskbar — were more mature than stock Android’s.
The OnePlus Pad (2023) brought premium design to the mid-range: 11.6-inch 144Hz display, Dimensity 9000, $479. It proved that Android tablets could be premium without costing $800+.
What Android Tablets Still Get Wrong
- App ecosystem: Many apps still don’t have tablet layouts. Instagram, Twitter, and even some Google apps are stretched phone UIs.
- Performance: Non-Samsung Android tablets often use mid-range processors that struggle with multitasking.
- Update longevity: Samsung offers 4 years of OS updates; Google offers 5 for the Pixel Tablet. Apple offers 7+ for iPads.
- Accessory ecosystem: Keyboards, cases, and styluses for Android tablets are inconsistent and often low-quality compared to iPad accessories.
Final Thoughts
Android tablets have been declared dead so many times that their continued existence is an act of defiance. The Honeycomb Xoom was a prototype. The Nexus 7 was a value play. The Pixel C was a beautiful mistake. Samsung kept the category alive through sheer persistence.
Android 12L and the Pixel Tablet represent Google’s renewed commitment. The taskbar, two-column layouts, and improved multitasking make Android tablets more usable than ever. But the app ecosystem still lags behind iPadOS, and the hardware ecosystem — outside Samsung — is inconsistent.
Foldables may be the ultimate Android tablet. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Pixel Fold are phones that become tablets when you need them. As foldable technology improves and prices drop, the dedicated tablet may become a niche device. But for now, Android tablets are better than they’ve ever been — and that’s worth acknowledging.
