I’ve been daily-driving compact phones for years, and most of them come with a catch: weak battery, mid-range cameras, or a thermal meltdown every time you open a game. After a week of carrying the Galaxy S23, it finally felt like someone remembered that small phones don’t have to be compromised.

This isn’t a radical reboot. It’s a hard refresh of the S22 with smarter decisions where they matter: chipset, battery, display brightness, and durability. If you’re on anything older than an S21, this is basically the compact Android you’ve been waiting for.

Design: No-Nonsense, Actually Pocket-Friendly Flagship

The S23 sticks to a 6.1-inch footprint and proves again that you don’t need a tablet in your pocket to get a flagship experience. The front and back are now Gorilla Glass Victus 2, tied together with an armored aluminum frame and IP68 water resistance. In normal-human language: this thing is built to take more abuse from concrete, tiles, and whatever your floor is made of.

Samsung killed the contour-cut camera housing from the S22 and replaced it with three clean metal rings for the lenses. It looks simpler, wobbles less on a desk, and finally stops pretending to be some overly designed camera island. The back stays flat, the frame has just enough curve for grip, and the whole package feels light and easy to one-hand.

Colors are more restrained this year—Phantom Black, Cream, Green, Lavender, Graphite, Lime. The Lavender unit looks genuinely subtle instead of toy-like, which is not something you can say about a lot of “fun” colorways on flagships.

This is still one of the most compact modern Android phones you can actually live with all day. If you’re tired of 6.7-inch slabs, Samsung is basically one of the last big players still taking this size seriously.

Display: Same Panel, Much Brighter, Still 8-bit

On paper, the S23’s 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X is the same 2340 x 1080 panel as the S22. In practice, Samsung cranked the brightness hard. You still get 120Hz adaptive refresh, HDR10+ support, and very thin bezels, but peak brightness jumps by 35%.

Manual brightness tops out at around the same levels as the S22, but auto can now hit roughly 1200 nits across the panel, and around 1750 nits in small HDR highlights. HDR streaming looks better, outdoor visibility gets a real bump, and the minimum brightness dropping to about 1 nit makes night use less eye-searing.

Color profiles are typical Samsung: Vivid mode targeting DCI-P3 with a slightly cool bias you can warm up, and Natural mode closer to sRGB. Both are accurate enough that only people obsessing over calibration graphs will care.

The annoying part: this is still an 8-bit display while plenty of high-end phones are on 10-bit or even 12-bit color. Most people won’t see it, but in the €950–€1,000 bracket, you shouldn’t be behind competitors on panel depth.

Performance: Exclusive Snapdragon Power, Average Thermals

This is the big story: no Exynos anywhere. Every Galaxy S23 ships with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and Samsung gets its own overclocked version. You’re looking at a 1+2+2+3 CPU layout with a Cortex-X3 prime core pushed to 3.36GHz, paired with an Adreno 740 GPU bumped to 719MHz.

In benchmarks, it’s exactly what you’d expect: one of the fastest Android phones out there. Single-core CPU scores lead because of the higher X3 clock, and the GPU chews through 1080p workloads with ease. Games that support high frame rates run beautifully on the 120Hz panel.

But this is a compact phone with passive cooling, and physics still wins. In stress tests, CPU stability settles around 68%, with performance dropping to ~70% after about 15 minutes and then holding there. GPU is more aggressive: it drops after about 6 minutes and sits around 60% of peak.

Translation: the S23 is insanely fast in bursts and more than fast enough sustained, but if you’re hammering it with long gaming sessions, you’ll see it step down. The phone gets borderline hot at full tilt, and a case will only make heat dissipation worse.

Storage and memory are another area where Samsung plays a slightly dirty game. RAM is fixed at 8GB LPDDR5X, which is fine. But only the 256GB and 512GB variants get UFS 4.0. The 128GB base model uses older UFS 3.1. Because some regions were offering the 256GB at the same price at launch, the 128GB SKU is basically a trap for anyone who cares about long-term speed.

Battery and Charging: Efficient, Not Fast

Battery capacity finally gets nudged in the right direction: 3,900mAh, up 200mAh from the S22. That doesn’t sound like much, but combined with the more efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the S23 posts a 101h endurance rating in testing, with strong call, web, and video results.

Active use time of around 11.5 hours puts it roughly in line with a Pixel 8 despite the smaller cell, and it even outlasts older iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models in those specific tests. Standby is improved versus the S22, though still behind the Exynos-based S21.

Charging is where Samsung refuses to join the spec war. You’re capped at 25W wired while the S23+ and Ultra do 45W. With Samsung’s 25W PPS adapter, you’re looking at ~30% in 15 minutes, ~57% in 30 minutes, and a full charge in about 71 minutes.

You still get wireless charging and reverse wireless, which is useful for accessories, but if you’re coming from brands boasting 50–80% in 15 minutes, this will feel slow. And no, there’s no charger in the box—just a USB-C cable and a SIM tool.

Cameras: Same Hardware, Reliable Output, Better Selfies

Samsung didn’t mess with the rear camera setup: 50MP main (1/1.57″ GN3, OIS), 10MP 3x telephoto (OIS), and 12MP ultrawide (Sony IMX564). On the front, you finally get a higher-res 12MP selfie sensor with dual-pixel AF and Super HDR.

Daylight performance from the main camera is very familiar: 12MP binned shots with plenty of detail, high contrast, wide dynamic range, and Samsung’s usual slightly boosted colors and polished look. It’s not “natural,” but it’s consistent and very usable. Noise is mostly kept in the shadows without smearing everything.

There’s a 50MP mode buried in the aspect ratio menu that actually produces more detailed, more natural-looking images if you downscale them back to 12MP. It’s not just a marketing toggle—if you’re willing to handle bigger files, it’s worth using.

The 3x telephoto still outputs 12MP images from a 10MP sensor, so yes, there’s upscaling, but you’d be hard-pressed to spot it. Detail is strong, colors are accurate, and noise reduction is restrained enough to keep fine textures intact. 2x is just a digital crop from the main camera, so don’t expect Apple-style hybrid 2x magic here.

The 12MP ultrawide remains one of the better ones in the Android world: sharp enough across most of the frame, controlled corners, and decent dynamic range. Colors can lean a bit cool versus the main lens, which is annoying if you care about perfectly matched shots across lenses.

Portrait mode can use either the main or the 3x telephoto. Both produce convincing separation, strong detail, and pleasant background blur—though Samsung still ships it with more blur than most people need. You can dial it back.

The new 12MP selfie camera is a legitimate upgrade. You get sharper, cleaner images with excellent dynamic range, minimal noise, and reliable exposure. Super HDR pays off in tough lighting where older Samsung front cameras used to blow the background or crush shadows.

Low-light is where the S23 quietly improves over the S22 without changing hardware. Auto Night mode kicks in when needed and, combined with the more efficient image pipeline, gives you faster captures and fewer blurred shots.

The main camera produces clean, detailed night shots with realistic colors and well-managed highlights. Ultrawide and telephoto hold up surprisingly well in Night mode too—much better than the usual “just don’t” advice that applies to a lot of rival phones’ auxiliary lenses after dark.

Video is comprehensive: all four cameras can shoot up to 4K60, and the main sensor adds 8K30 (up from 8K24 on the S22). OIS is available on the main and telephoto; EIS can be enabled across all lenses and frame rates, plus a Super Steady 1440p mode.

Daytime 4K from the main and telephoto is sharp, with accurate color and high dynamic range. Ultrawide 4K is also very solid with low noise. 8K is usable but looks more like a mild step up from 4K than a true resolution leap. Low-light video is fine on the main and ultrawide, pretty mediocre on the telephoto.

Stereo audio at 256Kbps/48kHz sounds clean, and Samsung’s zoom-in audio and 360 audio features are there if you care about those tricks.

Software: One UI 5.1 on Android 13, Finally Faster

The S23 ships with Android 13 and One UI 5.1, which is basically Samsung’s refined take on Material You plus a pile of useful extras. The core Android 13 stuff is all here: notification permission prompts, improved per-app notification controls, per-app language settings, and automatic clipboard clearing for privacy.

The bigger story is that Samsung finally took performance seriously again. One UI has a long history of feeling a half-beat behind competitors, but with One UI 5.x, animations and transitions are faster and smoother. On this hardware, the phone finally feels as quick as the spec sheet suggests.

You still get the usual customization: wallpaper-based color palettes extended to app icons, stacked widgets, and a deeply tweakable lock screen and always-on display (with 24Hz AOD refresh). There’s proper split-screen and pop-up window multitasking, now with quicker gestures—like a two-finger swipe up to start split-screen.

Modes and Routines are Samsung’s Focus Mode alternative, letting you automate profiles for driving, work, sleep, etc., controlling notifications, connectivity, sound profiles, and even wallpapers per mode. If you’re willing to invest a bit of setup time, it’s powerful.

DeX is fully supported, so you can plug into a monitor or TV and get a desktop-like interface. Connected devices are easier to manage, with better discovery for Smart View, DeX, and Chromecast targets, plus an option to hide notifications while casting.

Game Launcher and Game Booster are still here, with one interesting upcoming feature: the option to power the phone directly over USB without charging the battery during gaming. That should help reduce heat and long-term battery wear once it lands on the S23.

There’s also tighter integration of Expert RAW directly in the camera app, AI-based image clipping in the gallery (think Apple’s Visual Lookup), more granular GIF and photo editing tools, and quality-of-life stuff like better Do Not Disturb exceptions, the ability to disable RAM Plus, and simplified performance profiles (Normal and Lite).

Audio and Speakers: Small Phone, Big Sound

The S23 uses a hybrid stereo setup: a dedicated bottom speaker plus the earpiece acting as the second channel through a tiny slit above the display. The result is “Good” measured loudness with surprisingly rich sound.

There’s actual bass, clear mids for voices, and strong high-frequency presence. Compared directly to the S22, output is deeper and fuller. Dolby Atmos is available with presets for movies, music, and games, but the core tuning is already solid without it.

Pricing, Competition, and Who Should Actually Buy This

Samsung wants around €950 for the 8/128GB Galaxy S23 and about €1,000 for the 8/256GB model. Given the UFS 4.0 advantage on 256GB, the base model is hard to recommend unless it’s heavily discounted.

In the compact flagship space, your main Android alternatives are thin on the ground:

  • Asus Zenfone 9 is about €200 cheaper, very similar in size with a 5.9-inch screen and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. It lacks a dedicated telephoto and leans on lossless-ish zoom from the main sensor. If budget is tight and you can live without a 3x camera, it’s a strong value play.
  • Galaxy S22 is now roughly €350 cheaper than the S23. Same display, same cameras, same 25W charging, just worse battery life and less efficient silicon. If you don’t care about Exynos vs Snapdragon and can live with shorter endurance, it’s easily the better value.
  • iPhone 14 sits around €900, but with a 60Hz OLED and no telephoto at all. Performance and battery are good, but on pure hardware-for-money, it’s behind.
  • iPhone 14 Pro is heavier and about €350 more than the S23, but you get a brighter adaptive display with Dolby Vision and both 2x and 3x optical-equivalent zoom plus UWB and LiDAR.
  • Xiaomi 13 (when widely available) undercuts the S23 with a rumored €700–€800 price, larger 6.36-inch Dolby Vision OLED, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, IP68, and rear cameras that generally match Samsung’s. Its selfie system is weaker, and the phone is less compact.

So who should actually buy the Galaxy S23?

If you’re on an S22, don’t. This is a refinement, not an upgrade. You’d be paying serious money for small quality-of-life gains.

If you’re on an S21 or older—or you’ve been avoiding Galaxy flagships because of Exynos—the S23 is finally the compact Snapdragon Galaxy that doesn’t compromise. You get elite performance (with honest thermal limits), one of the best small-phone camera packages, excellent battery life for the size, IP68, and a mature software stack.

Is it exciting? Not really. But for people who want a compact Android flagship that just does everything well without weird trade-offs, it’s exactly what the market has been missing.
