Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: AI Ambition, Hardware Stagnation

Everyone’s hyping the Pixel 9 Pro XL as Google’s big AI flagship. I’m not convinced it’s a $1,200 phone that actually earns that price once you look past the Gemini demos.

Design: Premium, Slippery, and Very iPhone-Adjacent

Google has finally gone full “big slab” with the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Flat display, flat sides, glossy metal frame, matte glass back on the Pro, and the reverse finish on the non-Pro – it’s very Apple-coded whether Google admits it or not.

In hand, it’s basically the same size as the Pixel 8 Pro despite the XL branding, just 8g heavier at 221g. You still get Gorilla Glass Victus 2 front and back, an aluminum frame, IP68 rating, and that new oval camera bar. It’s less of a visor and more of a chunky brick stuck across the back.

The bar is thick, but it does at least look distinctive. The problem is the rest of the phone: the matte glass is nicely smudge-resistant yet extremely slippery. This is one of those devices that almost demands a case on day one, which also happens to help visually flatten that camera bump.

You get the usual four colors – Porcelain, Rose Quartz, Hazel, Obsidian – and a single nanoSIM slot plus eSIM if you want dual-SIM. Physically, it’s flagship-grade, just not original in the way older Pixels used to be.

Display: Brightness Champ, Still Behind on Color Depth

On paper, the Super Actua display is one of the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s clear wins. It’s a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED, 1344 x 2992, 20:9, with 486ppi and 1–120Hz adaptive refresh.

Google claims up to 3,000 nits peak, and lab testing backs up that they’re serious about brightness: around 2,365 nits in auto under harsh light on a 75% window, and more than 1,300 nits even on manual max. That’s significantly higher than most recent flagships and a real improvement over the 8 Pro.

The catch: this is still an 8‑bit panel. Meanwhile, a bunch of competitors have moved to 10‑bit or even 12‑bit for smoother gradients and better HDR tonality. If you care about color depth, that’s a weird corner to cut on a $1,200 “Pro” phone.

Refresh handling is at least smart. With Smooth Display enabled, it hangs at 120Hz in games, browsing, and social apps while dropping as low as 1Hz on static content. There’s no granular mode control, just a toggle, but the behavior is sensible.

HDR support covers HDR10 and HDR10+, plus Ultra HDR images, but there’s no Dolby Vision. Streaming works as expected: HDR in YouTube and Netflix, with Netflix at Full HD via Widevine L1.

Performance and Battery: Better Than Old Pixels, Still Not Class-Leading

Tensor G4 is supposed to be the brains behind all the AI talk. The CPU layout jumps to 1x Cortex‑X4 at 3.1GHz, 3x Cortex‑A720 at 2.6GHz, and 4x Cortex‑A520 at 1.92GHz. GPU is still Mali‑G715 MC7, just clocked higher (940MHz vs 890MHz on G3). RAM is now 16GB LPDDR5X.

On paper, that’s a decent generational bump. In practice, early benchmarking was a mess: scores so low they were initially worse than the Pixel 8 Pro, with Google’s own test unit apparently blocking normal benchmark installs. A later unit at least beats the 8 Pro now, but it’s still “way behind the competition.” That’s not what you want to hear about a $1,200 flagship in late 2024.

The TPU for AI tasks hasn’t changed from Tensor G3, which makes the “next-gen AI” marketing feel mostly like software and modem optimization rather than real silicon leap.

Battery is 5,060mAh – basically identical to the 8 Pro’s 5,050mAh and similar to Galaxy S24 Ultra’s 5,000mAh. Battery life has improved meaningfully versus the 8 Pro: browsing jumped from 10:34h to 12:18h, video playback from 12:18h to 14:35h, with a small gaming bump. Good for a Pixel, still behind rival flagships in overall endurance.

Charging finally creeps up: Google now sells a 45W PD charger to feed the phone’s 37W wired rating (up from 27W on 8 Pro). Using a Samsung 45W PD charger, the phone hit 67% in 30 minutes and 100% in about 1:18h. That’s fine, not impressive.

Wireless charging hits 23W on the Pixel Stand (2nd gen) or 12W on generic EPP Qi pads, with reverse wireless charging via Battery Share. Solid, but nothing you haven’t seen before.

Cameras: Excellent Photos, Mildly Outdated Hardware

Here’s where the disappointment really sets in. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is supposed to be the camera flagship, but most of the rear hardware is carried over from the 8 Pro.

You get:
– 50MP main with OIS (1/1.31″ sensor, 1x–2x range)
– 48MP ultrawide, now on a smaller 1/2.55″ sensor but with a brighter f/1.7 lens and AF
– 48MP 5x telephoto with OIS
– All rear cameras benefit from Multi-zone LDAF
– New 42MP selfie camera with AF and an ultrawide lens

On the main camera, daylight shots are very good: great dynamic range, low noise, natural sharpening, and generally lifelike color that falls somewhere between “muted Samsung” and “less flat than iPhone.” Skin tones and detail look strong, even if full 50MP mode is more gimmick than gain.

At 2x crop, it does decently but doesn’t rival true optical zoom. Against Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max, it’s roughly on par with the iPhone and behind the Galaxy, nowhere near the big-camera Chinese phones (vivo X-series, Xiaomi 14 Ultra).

The 5x telephoto is sharp enough in daylight but never spectacular. Minimum focus distance around 75cm limits tele macro potential and puts it behind the S24 Ultra’s close-focusing zoom. Detail is competitive with iPhone and Galaxy, but nothing stands out.

The ultrawide might actually be the most interesting rear camera: despite the downsized sensor, it resolves excellent detail and can out-resolve both S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max in good light. Again, it’s a Quad Bayer 48MP vs their more conventional 1/2.55″ setups.

Macro is handled by the ultrawide, which can focus down to ~15mm. You can get dramatic closeups, but depth of field is razor thin and field curvature means sharpness is mostly centered. It’s better than nothing, but a telephoto that focuses close would be more useful.

The selfie camera is one of the big wins. The 42MP sensor outputs detailed 10.5MP shots with AF, wide FOV, accurate skin tones, and strong HDR. In direct comparison, it arguably beats both S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max overall.

Low-light performance is where the rear system shows its age. The main camera produces pleasing, bright images, but shadow detail is mushier than the Galaxy’s. The Pixel tends to boost shadows and manage highlights well, but the S24 Ultra is sharper; versus iPhone, Pixel usually has a slight edge, but it’s not dramatic.

At 2x in low light, it’s “fine if there’s enough light” – not a confidence-inspiring verdict. At 5x, the Pixel often looks like it’s leaning on the main camera plus digital zoom, especially compared to the Galaxy and iPhone. The S24 Ultra clearly wins detail and sharpness; the iPhone also edges out the Pixel more often than not.

Ultrawide night shots are bright and clean but soft at pixel level, trading sharpness for lower noise. Samsung errs the other way – more detail, more noise. Neither is excellent, but again, the Pixel doesn’t lead.

Video is the real weak point. All rear cameras can shoot 4K60, the front can do 4K60 as well, and main plus tele support cloud-processed 8K30 via Video Boost. Stabilization is excellent, with Standard, Active (1080p30 on ultrawide), and Locked modes.

But detail just isn’t there. 4K footage from the main camera is softer than both S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max – and, disturbingly, softer than the Pixel 8 Pro. Ultrawide and tele follow the same pattern: acceptable, not class-leading. Low light narrows the gap slightly but still doesn’t flip the script.

For a brand whose identity is built on camera quality, “solid photos, mediocre video, and last year’s hardware” is not a great narrative.

Gemini, AI Tricks, and the Seven-Year Promise

Software is where Google is clearly spending its energy. The Pixel 9 Pro XL ships with Android 14, clean Pixel UI, and seven years of full software support – major OS updates, security patches, and even spare parts availability.

Gemini is deeply baked in. There’s a dedicated Gemini app for chat-style assistance, text generation, call summaries, cooking ideas from fridge photos, and email drafting. Magic Editor can rewrite entire scenes in photos – remove distractions, generate skies, or move subjects. Zoom Enhance tries to hallucinate detail in crops. Add Me lets you shoot the photographer into a group shot. Best Take swaps faces between frames.

Pixel Studio handles AI image generation (no people yet), and a new Screenshots app turns your chaotic screenshot archive into a searchable database powered by Gemini. Circle to Search makes on-screen object lookup much easier, and you still get Magic Eraser, Blur/Unblur, Zoom Enhancer and all the familiar Pixel AI camera tricks.

Gemini Advanced, the higher-tier AI model, is free for one year for Pixel 9 Pro XL owners (as with Pixel 8 Pro). After that it’s a paid subscription, though many of the on-device or basic features work without it.

There’s also Satellite SOS, currently US-only, powered by Garmin Response and Skylo’s NTN satellite network. In theory, coverage can go global over time, though right now it’s strictly emergency use in the US on Pixel 9 series devices.

This software story is strong, but it also underlines the hardware problem. Most of these AI features are cloud-heavy and not meaningfully tied to Tensor G4’s unchanged TPU.

Should You Buy It?

The Pixel 9 Pro XL is obviously a capable flagship. The display is superbly bright, design and build are premium, the new ultrasonic fingerprint reader finally fixes a long-standing annoyance, and the cameras still take excellent stills even if they’re not best-in-class anymore. Seven years of support and deep AI integration are genuinely consumer-friendly.

The problem is the value proposition. For $1,200/€1,200, you’re getting:
– A camera stack mostly recycled from last year
– Video quality that’s a step back from the 8 Pro
– Battery life that’s better for a Pixel but behind rivals
– Performance that still trails other flagships by a wide margin

If you’re buying into the Pixel ecosystem specifically for Google’s AI toys and long-term updates, this might make sense. But if you care about camera hardware progress, raw performance, or battery dominance, this is not the phone that pushes anything forward.
