I’ve carried compact Android flagships for years because I hate using a tablet-sized slab as a phone. On paper, the Pixel 9 Pro looked like the one I’ve been waiting for: full ‘XL-grade’ cameras, LTPO 120Hz panel, 16GB RAM, all in a smaller body. But a week in, between heat, throttling, and AI-first decisions, the honeymoon ended fast.
Google finally took the compact flagship space seriously. The problem is they still shipped a $1,000 phone with 2023-level silicon and some very 2020-era compromises.
Design: Pixel DNA with iPhone cosplay and smudges
The Pixel 9 Pro ditches the old visor for a big centered camera island, but it still looks unmistakably Pixel. The back is matte, the frame is glossy, and the whole package lands squarely in the “premium slab” category: aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 front and back, IP68, and four colors (Porcelain, Rose Quartz, Hazel, Obsidian).
It also lands squarely in the “you need a case” category. The phone is a fingerprint magnet and slippery enough that I didn’t feel comfortable using it bare. The camera island sticks out a lot and makes the phone rock on a table, though at least the centered layout looks cleaner than most asymmetric camera bumps.
That island packs the 50MP main, 48MP ultrawide, 48MP 5x periscope, laser AF, flash, and even the thermometer sensor. Visually, the flat-ish frame and overall silhouette lean heavily toward Apple’s current design language. You’re basically getting an Android-flavored iPhone 16 Pro outline, for better or worse.
Usability is mostly good. The ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner finally feels like it belongs on a flagship: fast, accurate, and placed at a comfortable height. Buttons are clicky, but Google still insists on the power button sitting above the volume rocker, which will annoy muscle memory from every other Android. There’s a single nano-SIM slot with eSIM for dual SIM, no microSD, no headphone jack.
Display: ‘Super Actua’ actually delivers
The 6.3-inch OLED is where the Pixel 9 Pro feels genuinely high-end. Resolution jumps to 1280 x 2856 with a dense 495 ppi, and brightness is genuinely impressive: around 1,298 nits manually and roughly 2,331 nits with auto boost. This is well into “no problem under harsh sun” territory.
Google’s “Super Actua” branding at least maps to something real: LTPO from 1Hz to 120Hz. That means you get the proper dynamic refresh rate the vanilla Pixel 9 doesn’t have. There’s only a simple “Smooth display” toggle and it’s off by default, which is annoying on a $1,000 device, but once enabled the phone happily stays at 120Hz in apps, games, and scrolling, and ramps down for static content.
HDR support is HDR10/HDR10+ only — no Dolby Vision — but HDR works fine in YouTube and Netflix, with Widevine L1 and Full HD streams. Ultra HDR photo support is on board, so your high-contrast photos pop in the gallery and compatible apps.
Overall, the display is one of the Pixel 9 Pro’s strongest points. If the phone shipped with a more competent SoC behind it, this would be a clear win. As is, the screen is arguably overqualified for the silicon.
Tensor G4: hot, throttled, and just barely keeping up
Tensor G4 should have been Google’s chance to finally escape the “good enough but hot” trap. Instead, they doubled down. The CPU layout moves to 1x Cortex-X4 at 3.1 GHz, 3x Cortex-A720 at 2.6 GHz, and 4x Cortex-A520 at 1.92 GHz, all current-gen cores, paired with a Mali-G715 MC7 GPU clocked higher than last gen.
Benchmarks paint a very unflattering picture. CPU performance is only slightly ahead of Tensor G3 and roughly in line with Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 — not Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and definitely not the newer top-tier chips. AnTuTu scores sit near last year’s Tensor G3 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 devices. GPU performance trails badly in 3DMark, and the GPU doesn’t even support the Vulkan features needed for the Solar Bay test.
The bigger issue: thermals. Under sustained load, the Pixel 9 Pro heats up fast and then slams into aggressive throttling. Performance drops hard and stays there. On the plus side, it doesn’t yo-yo up and down, so you don’t get stutter spikes. On the minus side, we’re talking “severely crippled” performance in stress tests on a so-called Pro flagship.
In day-to-day use, the UI is smooth and typical apps are fine, but you’re paying four figures for something that behaves like a midrange SoC under pressure. Google clearly prioritized AI workloads and modem efficiency (Exynos 5400 with satellite support) over raw mobile performance. That’s a choice; it’s just not a very consumer-friendly one at this price.
Battery, charging, and speakers: strong endurance, mediocre charging
Battery life is one of the rare unqualified wins. With a 4,700 mAh cell, the Pixel 9 Pro posts an Active Use Score of 13:11 hours, beating both the Galaxy S24 and iPhone 15 Pro in the process. For a compact flagship, that’s impressive.
Charging, though, is stuck in 2022. You get 27W wired via USB Power Delivery and up to 15W wireless on the Pixel Stand (12W on generic Qi). Google claims 1–55% in 30 minutes with its 45W adapter; using a Samsung 45W PD brick hit roughly the same numbers. Respectable, but nothing special when $400 phones are pushing far faster.
There’s no charger in the box — just a USB-C cable — which Google tries to offset with eco-friendly all-cardboard packaging. Recycling is good, but eco narratives don’t change the fact that you’re buying a $1,000 phone and immediately shopping for a charger.
Speakers are more encouraging. The dual-speaker setup (bottom-firing plus earpiece) is loud enough to earn a “very good” rating and actually louder than the bigger Pixel 9 Pro XL. Tuning is clean, with clear mids and no distortion at max volume, though bass has been dialed back compared to older Pixels. It sounds more balanced than boomy.
Cameras: full Pro hardware, AI everywhere, and some odd trade-offs
Camera hardware is essentially Pixel 9 Pro XL in a smaller shell:
– 50MP main, 1/1.31″ sensor
– 48MP ultrawide (now on a smaller 1/2.55″ sensor but brighter f/1.7 lens, still with AF)
– 48MP 5x periscope telephoto
– 42MP selfie with an ultrawide lens and autofocus
Daylight shots from the main camera are classic Pixel: high contrast, excellent dynamic range, mostly restrained colors, and near-zero noise. Detail is strong without looking like a sharpening filter exploded over your photos. Shadows can go a bit too dark, but it’s a stylistic choice more than a flaw.
The 5x telephoto is solid but not class-leading. Detail is good, color and dynamic range are consistent with the main, but the minimum focus distance (around 75cm) is weaker than something like a Galaxy S24 Ultra. You lose out on those tight near-macro-type zoom shots. 10x–30x zoom looks surprisingly usable, with low noise, though it’s clearly leaning on binning and heavy processing.
The ultrawide is a sidegrade: smaller sensor, brighter glass. It captures very detailed, natural-looking shots in good light and doubles as a pseudo-macro when you move in close. The macro behavior works, but sharpness falls off quickly away from the center, and the extreme close distance means you’ll often cast shadows on your subject. It’s fine, but a closer-focusing telephoto would have been cleaner.
The selfie camera is genuinely great. The 42MP sensor, AF, and ultrawide field of view combine for sharp, detailed selfies with accurate skin tones and strong dynamic range. There is a bit of pixelation in fine detail if you zoom in, but not enough to spoil the output.
Low light keeps the Pixel character: aggressive auto night processing, bright exposures, controlled highlights, and boosted shadows that sometimes turn a bit mushy. There can be minor white balance shifts shot-to-shot. The telephoto holds up reasonably well, though fine detail is often more AI reconstruction than optical reality. Ultrawide low-light shots are bright and usable, but you will see softness at 1:1.
The annoying part is inconsistency on video. All cameras can do up to 4K60, with the main and telephoto supporting 8K30 via cloud-processed Video Boost. In ideal conditions, 1x and 5x footage has plenty of detail and very strong stabilization, but sharpness and texture can swing from crisp to mushy depending on the scene. Colors and contrast are often pushed a bit too far. It feels like the image pipeline is trying to do too much.
Then there are the AI toys: Magic Editor, Zoom Enhance, Best Take, Add Me, Unblur, and more. Some are fun and occasionally useful, but they’re also a reminder that Google is putting a lot of effort into fixing photos after the fact instead of pushing the sensor stack forward. If you just want consistently great point-and-shoot results, this is still a very good camera system — but it’s not clearly ahead of the pack anymore.
Android 14, Gemini, and seven years of support
The Pixel 9 Pro ships with Android 14 and Google’s usual clean UI. You get the familiar setup: customizable lockscreen, widgets, app drawer, and Material You theming for accent colors and icon shapes. It’s stable, fast, and doesn’t try to be clever for the sake of it.
The big story is Gemini. Gemini is everywhere: a standalone app, screenshot search, camera features, call summaries, email/text drafting, cooking ideas from photos, and more. You also get Pixel Studio for generative images (minus humans for now) and a screenshot organizer that lets you search across every capture using AI. Circle to Search is the other star: long-press the navbar, scribble on what you want, and Google does the rest.
Gemini Advanced, Google’s higher-end AI tier, is included free for one year on the Pixel 9 Pro (and 8 Pro / 9 Pro XL) where available. Most features work without it, but power users will care about the upgrade. Google is clearly framing this phone as a pocket AI terminal, not just a camera.
On the boring-but-important side, you get seven years of updates — both OS and security — plus guaranteed spare parts availability over that same period. That’s huge for longevity and right now is one of the strongest arguments for buying this phone.
Satellite SOS also shows up here, via Garmin Response and Skylo, giving emergency connectivity beyond cell and Wi‑Fi in supported regions (currently US-only). It’s a good safety add if you hike or travel off-grid.
Connectivity and I/O: modern, but not generous
The Pixel 9 Pro covers most modern bases: 5G (Sub-6, with an mmWave variant for some carriers), Wi-Fi 7 with 6GHz support, Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX HD, NFC, and a full sensor suite for motion, light, proximity, compass, and barometer.
The USB-C port supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 (up to 5 Gbps) plus OTG and DisplayPort alt mode for wired video output. It’s nice to see desktop/monitor output via cable, something many Android OEMs still skimp on at non-Ultra tiers.
The usual annoyances remain: no headphone jack, no FM radio, no IR blaster, no microSD. None of that is surprising in 2024, but it still stings when you’re handing over $1,000 and Google is also pushing cloud storage while shipping UFS 3.1 instead of the faster UFS 4.0 you see on rivals.
Price and competition: why is this $1,000 again?
The base Pixel 9 Pro with 128GB storage and 16GB RAM sits at about $1,000 / £1,000 / €1,100. 256GB pushes you to around £1,100 / €1,200, and 512GB climbs to roughly $1,220 / £1,220 / €1,330. A 1TB version theoretically exists but is basically MIA at retail.
For a “compact flagship with everything,” this makes sense on a spec sheet: full Pro camera stack, Super Actua LTPO display, 16GB RAM, satellite support, seven years of updates, and all the AI extras. But stack it against alternatives and the cracks show.
Samsung’s Galaxy S24 is cheaper in most markets, still gives you a 50MP main, 3x telephoto, 12MP ultrawide, 120Hz LTPO panel, and a current flagship-class Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or Exynos 2400. You lose the 5x periscope and some AI flair, but you gain better performance and likely better sustained gaming thermals.
Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro is the obvious cross-platform rival: same 6.3-inch class, 5x periscope zoom this year, Apple’s A-series performance, and its own AI push. Even last year’s cheaper iPhone 15 Pro still looks competitive, with a more practical 3x zoom and a completely different ecosystem advantage.
Then you have Android players like Xiaomi 14, which pack Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, LTPO 120Hz, and strong cameras into a similar footprint, often for less money depending on region.
Against that backdrop, Tensor G4’s middling scores and thermal throttling are hard to forgive. Google is effectively asking you to pay full flagship pricing for a chip that behaves like a midrange under stress because you’re buying into seven years of updates and their AI story.
Verdict: great compact Pixel, underwhelming $1,000 flagship
The Pixel 9 Pro nails a bunch of things enthusiasts have been asking Google for: a genuinely compact Pro phone with the full camera system, a serious LTPO display, strong battery life, and long software support. On that narrow brief, this is easily the best compact Pixel Google has ever made.
But “best Pixel” isn’t the same as “best $1,000 Android.” Tensor G4’s weak sustained performance and thermal behavior, 27W charging, and inconsistent video quality feel out of place in this price bracket. The camera is very good, but no longer clearly ahead of the pack. And a lot of the phone’s appeal is tied up in AI features that may or may not matter to you once the novelty wears off.
If you specifically want a compact Android with a 5x periscope, clean Android, and Google’s full AI toolbox, the Pixel 9 Pro belongs on your shortlist. Just go in knowing you’re paying top dollar for a phone that’s excellent in some areas and noticeably behind in others.
