The Pixel 7 Pro is the most Google phone Google has ever shipped — and that’s both its biggest strength and its main limitation.
You’re not getting the fastest chip, the brightest screen, or the quickest charging in the class. You are getting one of the smartest Android experiences, a versatile camera system, and pricing that undercuts the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Galaxy S22 Ultra almost everywhere.
Design: Same Visor, Slightly Smarter
Google didn’t rip up the Pixel 6 Pro playbook. The Pixel 7 Pro keeps the large 6.7-inch form factor with curved glass front and back, Gorilla Glass Victus and an IP68 rating. In hand, it feels smaller than its dimensions suggest (162.9 x 76.6 x 8.9 mm, 212 g), especially next to the Galaxy S22 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The most visible change is the camera visor. It’s no longer a separate glass bar; it’s now part of the aluminum midframe, polished to a glossy finish that matches the frame. That should mean fewer cracked camera strips, but the trade-off is cosmetic: users are already scratching the visor, and it’s a fingerprint magnet in Obsidian. Hazel and Snow should hide smudges better, but the high-gloss metal is never going to look pristine.
There’s also a strange design wart: a plastic cap in the top frame where a mmWave antenna would normally sit, despite this unit not supporting mmWave. The cap doesn’t match the frame perfectly and looks out of place, especially since the non-Pro manages without it.
Button placement is still unconventional. Power sits above volume on the right side, the SIM tray is on the left, and USB-C plus the main loudspeaker live on the bottom. If you’re coming from almost any other Android phone, your muscle memory will need retraining.
Display and Biometrics: Great Panel, Weird Refresh Logic
On paper, the display is where you’d expect a flagship to be. The Pixel 7 Pro uses a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED at 1440 x 3120 (19.5:9), which works out to 512 ppi. It supports up to 120 Hz and should be able to drop to 10 Hz depending on content.
Brightness is properly flagship-tier. With Adaptive brightness, it hits 1090 nits in a standardized test (75% APL) and up to around 1460 nits on a small 10% window, in line with Google’s 1500-nit peak claim. Manual brightness tops out around 588 nits. It’s not chasing the extreme numbers of iPhone 14 Pro models, but it’s absolutely competitive.
Color handling is simple: Adaptive and Natural, with no fine-grained tuning. Adaptive targets a more vivid DCI-P3 look with decent accuracy; Natural nails sRGB and looks more restrained. There’s no obvious color shift in either mode, and HDR10/HDR10+ are supported across major streaming apps. Dolby Vision is absent.
Refresh rate is where things get strange. The spec sheet says 10–120 Hz LTPO, but Android only ever reports 60 Hz and 120 Hz, both in the Display.Mode API and with the “Show refresh rate” developer overlay. With Smooth Display enabled, the phone switches between 120 and 60 Hz, dropping for static content or when you’re not interacting, but there’s no visible evidence of intermediate steps.
The in-display optical fingerprint scanner is placed high enough to reach easily and works reliably for some users and less so for others. Across reviewers, accuracy reports are inconsistent, but everyone agrees it’s not fast by 2022–2023 flagship standards. The unlock animation likely contributes to the perception of slowness. On the plus side, the illumination is restrained at night.
Tensor G2, Battery and Charging: Smart Over Speed
Inside, the Pixel 7 Pro runs Google’s second-gen Tensor G2, co-designed with Samsung on a 5 nm process. The CPU configuration stays unusual: 2x Cortex-X1 (2.85 GHz), 2x Cortex-A78 (2.35 GHz), and 4x Cortex-A55 (1.8 GHz). The big change on paper is the move from A76 to A78 mid cores and a new Mali-G710 MP7 GPU. AI workloads lean on an updated TPU that Google claims is about 60% faster for ML tasks versus the first-gen Tensor.
In benchmarks, Tensor G2 trails Qualcomm, Samsung, and MediaTek flagships. That’s not new; Pixels have never dominated synthetic charts. Subjectively, the UI feels smooth and fluid, and Google is clearly optimizing for their own software pipeline and on-device AI features rather than chasing peak performance numbers.
Battery capacity technically drops from 5003 mAh on the 6 Pro to a flat 5000 mAh. In standardized tests, the Pixel 7 Pro manages an overall endurance rating of 83 hours, with over 12.5 hours of Wi‑Fi web browsing at 120–60 Hz and more than 17 hours of video playback at 60 Hz. That’s fine, but not class-leading. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is notably stronger in screen-on tests, and Galaxy/OnePlus rivals hold small but consistent leads.
Battery-saving tweaks help, but not dramatically. Dropping from 1440p to 1080p adds roughly an hour to web browsing (to about 13:49 h). Locking at 60 Hz in 1440p gives a similar gain (around 13.5 hours). Combining 1080p and 60 Hz stretches web browsing to just over 14 hours. Video playback barely moves between these modes.
Charging is where Google is clearly behind. Wired charging tops out around 23 W via USB Power Delivery, and a 0–100% charge takes roughly 1:49–1:52 hours depending on charger. That’s slow even compared to conservative brands: the Galaxy S22 Ultra reaches full in about 1:04, and there are 65 W PD phones that hit 100% in under 50 minutes on the same 5000 mAh capacity.
The Pixel also “cheats” on the battery indicator more aggressively than most. It can take more than 25 extra minutes to reach a truly full state after showing 100%, which may matter if you rely on topping off quickly. Wireless charging hits the same 23 W only on Google’s Pixel Stand; generic Qi pads max at 12 W. There’s reverse wireless charging as well.
Software and AI: Where Tensor Actually Matters
The Pixel 7 Pro runs Android 13 the way Google wants Android to look. The UI is clean, animations are smooth, and there’s no heavy OEM skin. You get three years of major OS updates and five years of security patches, plus Pixel-first features that lean on the Tensor G2’s NPU and TPU.
Android 13 brings system-wide theming, including icons, and tweaks to media controls. Spatial Audio and Bluetooth LE Audio are supported when paired with compatible headphones. That’s standard for Android 13 devices, but Pixels layer on more unique “smart” tools:
- Call Screen: Google Assistant can pick up calls, tell you who’s calling and why, and surface options visually when dealing with business IVR menus. It can suggest better call times for busy lines. Some of this is region- and language-limited.
- On-device call captions and replies: You can answer a call in silence; the phone transcribes the caller’s speech and speaks your typed responses back. All of this runs locally, no data connection required.
- Noise suppression for calls: Tensor G2 reduces background noise at both ends of the call.
- Recorder app with live transcription and speaker labels: It can transcribe entire conversations with searchable text, even if the phone is in your pocket, again run locally for English.
- Now Playing: Always-on ambient song recognition that shows track info on the lockscreen.
- Smart text and image selection: In the recent apps view, a “Select” button lets you grab text or images from whatever’s on screen, even inside images.
- Photo Unblur and image cleanup: The Photos app can attempt to fix blurry shots using ML, with mixed but sometimes impressive results.
Face unlock returns, using only the selfie camera and ML. It’s fast in good light but less reliable in low light or when your face is partially obstructed. It’s not on the same level as hardware depth-based face systems.
None of this is about raw CPU/GPU muscle. It’s where Tensor’s AI blocks actually matter, and it’s the primary reason to pick a Pixel over a faster Snapdragon phone.
Cameras: Incremental Hardware, Heavy Software
The Pixel 6 Pro already did the big camera overhaul. The Pixel 7 Pro tweaks around the edges: same main sensor, an upgraded ultrawide with autofocus, and a new 5x telephoto that trades sensor size for extra reach.
- Main camera: 50 MP Samsung GN1 (most likely), 1/1.31″, 4‑to‑1 binning to 12.5 MP, ~24–25 mm equivalent, OIS.
- Ultrawide: 12 MP, 1/2.9″, 1.25 µm pixels, wider 125.8° FOV versus 114° on 6 Pro, now with autofocus for macro.
- Telephoto: 48 MP Samsung GM5 (very likely), 1/2.55″, 0.7 µm pixels, 5x optical at ~117–119 mm equivalent, f/3.5, OIS.
- Selfie: 10.8 MP, 92.8° FOV, f/2.2, fixed focus, outputs 10 MP.
In daylight, the main camera delivers the classic Pixel look: high microcontrast, gritty texture rendering, and deep midtones. Shadows are darker than on Galaxy and iPhone, giving a moodier, more dramatic image. Colors are vivid but not cartoonish. Dynamic range is wide, though not the absolute widest versus rivals that lift shadows more aggressively.
At 2x, Google leans on Super Res Zoom. The phone intentionally uses slight camera shake (or OIS micro-movements on a tripod) to capture extra detail. Results are solid, filling the gap between 1x and 5x without a dedicated mid-tele. They’re not as sharp as Apple’s 2x crop from the 48 MP main on iPhone 14 Pro, but competitive with Galaxy and Xiaomi’s approaches.
Between 2x and 5x, the Pixel composites frames from the main and telephoto: center from the tele, periphery from the main. When the whole frame has similar detail, you can see transitions between the zones if you look closely. At native 5x, the telephoto is good but not best-in-class. Detail is strong, but microcontrast is lower than top 5x shooters like Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra, and color skews a bit greener than the main camera.
At 10x, the Pixel holds its own against the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s periscope and Xiaomi’s long tele, but those phones retain a slight sharpness edge. At 30x, Samsung pulls away, with Google roughly matching Xiaomi but behind the S22 Ultra.
The ultrawide is a quiet success. Daylight shots are sharp, with very low noise and minimal purple fringing. Color and processing align closely with the main camera, unlike the telephoto. Compared to the S22 Ultra’s ultrawide, the Pixel’s is sharper with cleaner edges.
Ultrawide autofocus enables a macro mode that auto-triggers when you move close in the main camera. You can lock into macro or disable the auto-switching altogether. Close-up shots are detailed enough for casual use, but like most of Google’s imaging pipeline, they sharpen up a second or two after capture.
In low light, the Pixel defaults to Auto Night Sight and behaves similarly whether you use the dedicated Night Sight mode or let it trigger automatically. Main-camera images keep the Pixel look: rich color, deep shadows, and solid detail with restrained noise. Galaxy and Xiaomi rivals often produce brighter, more lifted night shots with extra highlight protection; some users will prefer those. The Pixel tends to stay closer to what a scene actually looks like.
The 5x telephoto performs surprisingly well at night, especially in darker scenes where it can beat Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra for sharpness and color accuracy. In more moderately lit conditions, Mi’s larger sensor claws back some detail advantage. Turning Night Sight off on the tele is risky: dark scenes can become soft and underexposed.
The ultrawide at night is “fine.” It maintains color and dynamic range but is a step behind the Galaxy S22 Ultra in sharpness and doesn’t leverage its hardware perfectly in extremely dark scenes. Without Night Sight, it can produce near-black frames.
Portrait mode uses the main camera at two effective focal lengths (~38 mm and ~70–80 mm equivalent, despite the 1x/2x labels). The shorter one produces excellent subject separation, natural blur, and strong detail. The longer option can get noisy and soft, especially with close backgrounds that confuse the segmentation.
Selfies are decent when lighting cooperates, especially at the wider 0.7x FoV, but the camera is picky. Backlit and indoor shots soften quickly, despite low ISO. The cropped 1.0x view isn’t dramatically worse than the wide version, but neither is a standout. Portrait selfies are fine at glance level but not special.
Video: 4K60 Everywhere, Heavy Stabilization Options
The Pixel 7 Pro records up to 4K60 from all four cameras, using H.264 by default with an H.265 option in settings. There’s no 8K, which will be a relief for some and a deal-breaker for spec-chasers.
In daylight, 4K30 and 4K60 at 1x are sharp with a slightly processed look, essentially no noise, high contrast, and saturated but controlled color. The 2x digital zoom is clearly softer when you pixel-peep, but okay for casual use. The 5x tele video is close to the best long-zoom phones but sits just behind devices like the Mi 11 Ultra in fine detail, with the same greenish cast seen in stills.
The ultrawide delivers strong 4K30/60 footage with good detail and matching color. Low-light video from the main camera is very competent: detailed, with well-managed noise and controlled halos. The 2x crop gets softer and shows more flare; ultrawide and tele clips are usable but not impressive in isolation.
Stabilization is where Google experiments heavily. Four main modes exist:
- Standard: Default, works on all cameras and resolutions. It smooths panning well but doesn’t fully cancel walking-induced motion at 1x.
- Locked: Available at 2x and 5x for distant subjects. It keeps framing tighter but doesn’t radically change stabilization versus Standard in testing.
- Active: For action shots, limited to 1080p30, sourced from the ultrawide with 1x/2x views. It handles running-level movement better but forces you down to 1080p.
- Cinematic pan: Shoots at 60 fps and outputs at half-speed, with no audio, for smoother “cinematic” moves. Available on all rear cameras at 1080p and 4K.
There’s also a Cinematic video mode (not just pan) that records 1080p24 with portrait-style background blur on the main camera.
Value and Verdict: Who Is the Pixel 7 Pro For?
Pricing is where the Pixel 7 Pro quietly undercuts the usual suspects. The base model sits at $900 / €900 / INR 85,000, generally cheaper than both the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Galaxy S22 Ultra.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is about $200 more in the US, roughly €550 more in Europe, and around 65% more expensive in India. Even the smaller iPhone 14 Pro costs significantly more in all three regions. Apple gives you better battery life, stronger raw performance, and more aggressive water resistance claims (6 m vs the IP68 minimum 1.5 m), but the Pixel answers with lower weight, a more compact feel, and a camera system that can beat the iPhone in some scenarios.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s pricing is more variable, but real-world street prices still tend to land above the Pixel 7 Pro in major markets. Samsung’s flagship brings the S Pen, slightly better battery life, and faster charging. Camera trade-offs between the two are nuanced rather than one-sided.
The most direct competition might actually be inside Google’s own stable. A discounted Pixel 6 Pro covers most of the same bases — same main camera, similar design, and broadly similar software experience — for around $250 / €200 / INR 20,000 less. You give up the 5x tele redesign, ultrawide autofocus, and Tensor G2’s AI gains, but the core Pixel formula is intact.
The regular Pixel 7 sits close to last year’s 6 Pro on price. It shares Tensor G2 and software perks with the 7 Pro but loses the dedicated telephoto and some of the hardware luxuries, relying on 2x Super Res instead.
So where does that leave the Pixel 7 Pro? It’s a phone for people who care more about smart features, camera character, and clean Android than about benchmark charts and charging races. It’s not the battery king, not the fastest, and not the quickest to charge, but it offers a distinctive mix of AI-driven features, competitive imaging, and relatively aggressive pricing.
If you already own a Pixel 6 Pro, the jump is evolutionary, not transformative. If you’re on an older Pixel or coming from another Android brand — or looking for a cheaper alternative to an iPhone 14 Pro Max — the Pixel 7 Pro makes a strong, rational case without leaning on hype.
