The iPhone 11 and Galaxy S10e fight over cameras and battery life; the Pixel 4 quietly shows up with worse endurance, fewer lenses – and one of the most useful software features we’ve seen in years.
The hardware story is familiar and a bit tired. The software story, especially around Google’s Recorder app, is where things actually get interesting.
A Compact Flagship with 2019 Priorities – and Problems
On paper, the smaller Pixel 4 is basically a shrunken Pixel 4 XL.
You get a 5.7-inch P‑OLED at 1080×2280 in a 19:9 aspect ratio, which works out to 444ppi. That’s plenty sharp for this size and more detailed than the iPhone 11’s lower‑res LCD. It also supports a 90Hz refresh rate, giving it a smoother feel than the Galaxy S10e and iPhone 11, which are stuck at 60Hz.
The tradeoffs show up fast.
Battery capacity is just 2,800mAh. That’s tiny next to similarly small phones like the Galaxy S10e and Xperia 5, which sit in the ~3,100mAh range. In testing, the Pixel 4 couldn’t crack 10 hours of web browsing and managed a little over 11 hours of video playback, landing at an overall 62-hour endurance rating – well behind the iPhone 11’s 15:29 of browsing and 18:43 of video.
So you’re getting smooth UI and pure Android 10, but you’re paying for it with below‑average stamina.
Design vs Competition: Forehead Over Notch and Holes
Pixels have never been beauty-pageant winners, and the 4 doesn’t change that. Instead of a notch or hole‑punch, you get a chunky forehead packed with hardware: a regular selfie cam, 3D ToF camera, ambient and proximity sensors, an earpiece/second speaker, and radar for Motion Sense gestures.
The bezels aren’t flagship‑thin, but they’re not a disaster either. They’re thicker than recent Galaxies, but roughly on par with an iPhone 11 (minus the notch) and arguably cleaner than the S10e’s corner hole‑punch. The square rear camera block is more recognizable than pretty, but at least it’s consistent across colors.
Color choices are classic Pixel: Oh So Orange, Clearly White, and Just Black. The orange and white models get a frosted matte Gorilla Glass 5 back that resists fingerprints but is slippery; the black version is glossy and smudge‑prone. All three share a matte black aluminum frame and IP68 water and dust resistance.
Physically, the phone is compact at 147.1 x 68.8 x 8.2mm. In the hand it matches the Galaxy S10e’s feel and makes the iPhone 11 look bulky. If you miss genuinely small high‑end phones, the Pixel 4 is one of the few left.
Snapdragon 855, 6GB RAM, and the Price of Being Late
Under the hood, the Pixel 4 runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 with 6GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of storage.
By late 2019 standards, that’s conservative. Many Android flagships moved to 8GB as a baseline and some to the slightly faster Snapdragon 855+. Storage is also stingy: 64GB as a base, 128GB max, and no microSD expansion.
Performance is fine, but benchmarks show it trailing many peers on the same silicon. In GeekBench 5 and AnTuTu, it ends up near the bottom of the Snapdragon 855 pack. AnTuTu scores also drop after repeated runs, suggesting limited sustained performance. Translation: general usage is snappy, but heavy gaming and long benchmark loops aren’t this phone’s strength.
The bigger problem is psychological: you’re paying premium money while “superior hardware is around the corner,” as always with Google’s fall schedule relative to Qualcomm’s.
Cameras: Telephoto Instead of Ultra‑Wide
Google finally gave in to the multi‑camera trend, but only halfway.
The Pixel 4 adds a 16MP telephoto camera (f/2.4, OIS, ~45mm equivalent) next to the familiar 12.2MP main sensor (f/1.7, 1.4µm pixels, OIS). Technically it’s not a excellent 2x jump in focal length, but since the tele captures 16MP and outputs 12MP, the effective output sits right in the usual 2x ballpark.
What you don’t get is an ultra‑wide camera.
That’s a tough sell when competitors are happy to give you all three. The iPhone 11 pairs a main and ultra‑wide; the Galaxy S10 and many others have wide, ultra‑wide, and tele. Google argues that most people zoom more than they shoot ultra‑wide, but many brands manage to avoid that decision entirely.
To Google’s credit, the dual‑camera setup delivers.
Daylight images from the main camera are classic Pixel: wide dynamic range with a focus on preserving highlights, slightly cooler colors, and very good detail. Noise is managed better than the previous generation, and Live HDR+ now shows you a near‑final look in the viewfinder instead of surprising you in the gallery.
The telephoto produces detailed 2x shots with slightly warmer tones and only minor loss in micro‑contrast when you zoom in. Super Res Zoom helps fill in detail beyond optical range. Portrait mode is excellent, with strong subject isolation and convincing background blur on both people and non‑human subjects.
Low‑light, regular Photo mode already delivers usable shots, though noise is more visible than on some competitors and blur can creep in if shutter speeds drop. Night Sight substantially brightens shadows and recovers highlights, especially in dark scenes and neon‑heavy environments, though certain warm light sources can give photos a bleached look.
Video is where the spec sheet loses to almost every other flagship. There’s no 4K60; you’re limited to 4K30 and 1080p at 30/60fps on both cameras. 4K30 from the main sensor is detailed but a bit noisy with heavy sharpening halos. The telephoto’s 4K is softer and warmer, but often more natural thanks to less aggressive sharpening. Stabilization is a highlight: it keeps footage steady across modes, smoothing walking and panning impressively.
Android 10 as Google Intended: Face Unlock, Gestures, Motion Sense
This is the first Pixel generation to go all‑in on face authentication.
The rear fingerprint scanner is gone; you only get Face Unlock, powered by IR hardware similar in concept to Apple’s Face ID. It’s fast and works from almost any angle, helped by Motion Sense, which starts the unlock process as your hand reaches for the phone.
There are catches.
First, the phone can unlock with your eyes closed, which is a security risk. Google has promised an update to tighten this but hasn’t delivered it yet on review units. Second, banking and payment apps haven’t caught up. Fingerprint support took years to roll out across financial apps; Face Unlock is at square one, aside from Google Pay and a handful of password managers.
Android 10 itself is Pixel‑clean.
Google’s 2‑button nav is gone, replaced with iPhone‑style gestures: swipe up to go Home, swipe from the sides for Back, swipe up and hold for multitasking, and swipe from the corners for Assistant. You can still trigger Assistant by squeezing the phone (Active Edge).
The Pixel launcher adds small but welcome tweaks: system‑wide accent colors and fonts, icon shape options, and new live wallpapers that respond to Motion Sense.
Motion Sense – Google’s radar‑based gesture system, built on Project Soli – is where expectation and reality diverge.
The initial Soli demos (tiny finger gestures controlling interfaces) never made it here. Instead, Motion Sense is mostly about skipping tracks, silencing alarms and calls with a wave, and waking Face Unlock as you approach. It can even trigger from you working near the phone on a desk, which can be annoying and doesn’t help battery life.
Useful? Sometimes. Transformative? Not really.
Recorder: The Pixel 4 Feature That Actually Matters
Buried under all the camera talk and Motion Sense marketing, Google quietly shipped something far more practical: the new Recorder app.
The first build on the Pixel 4 was a basic voice recorder – start, stop, play, share. Nothing special. Then, before the Pixel 4 even launched, Google pushed an update that changed the app entirely.
Recorder now does real‑time audio transcription on the device and makes those transcripts fully searchable.
Record a lecture, meeting, or interview and the app automatically turns speech into text as it’s happening. It also tries to classify sounds – speech vs music, plus tags like applause, animals, laughter, whistling, and more. Transcripts can be exported as text files to other apps like Google Drive.
The twist: all of this runs locally on the phone.
Search is where it gets powerful. Within Recorder, you can search your recordings for a specific word or phrase. The example image on the Play Store shows someone searching for “design,” with the app highlighting every instance of the word in the transcript and timeline. Tap a result and you jump straight to that moment in the audio.
For students, journalists, and anyone who lives in meetings, this is immediately useful. You no longer have to scrub through an hour‑long file hoping to land near the quote you need – you just search and jump.
Right now, there are constraints.
Recorder’s transcription only works in English. And while the updated app briefly rolled out through the Play Store, availability is limited; the APK can be sideloaded from places like APK Mirror and reportedly works on most Android devices, not just Pixels.
Even with those limits, this is the most genuinely helpful feature attached to the Pixel 4 story, and it doesn’t care how many camera sensors you have.
Audio, Speakers, and Everyday Tradeoffs
Audio is a mixed bag.
The Pixel 4’s stereo setup – bottom‑firing main speaker plus earpiece – is well balanced. It’s loud enough to land in the “Excellent” group in testing and beats the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and Galaxy S10e on sheer loudness, though the OnePlus 7T still wins for both volume and quality.
Wired audio is less impressive.
There’s no headphone jack, no USB‑C‑to‑3.5mm dongle in the box, and no bundled headphones. Using Google’s own USB‑C adapter, measured output into an external amp shows weak signal‑to‑noise, mediocre stereo separation, and lower volume than you’d expect from a 2019 flagship. Plugging in headphones worsens stereo crosstalk and drops loudness further. High‑impedance cans are a bad match here.
Charging is handled by an 18W USB Power Delivery adapter – basically the same brick from the original Pixel. A full charge takes about 1:27h, with 49% in 30 minutes. Considering the small 2,800mAh battery and modest endurance, that’s not exactly blazing.
Pricing, Value, and Why Discounts Decide Everything
On launch, the Pixel 4 started at $800 / €750 / £670.
That puts it above the iPhone 11 in Europe and the UK, and in the same ballpark as – or higher than – the Galaxy S10e in many markets, while delivering worse battery life, no ultra‑wide camera, limited storage options, and no 4K60 video.
Stacked up:
- iPhone 11: better battery life, main + ultra‑wide cameras, lower‑res LCD at 60Hz, no telephoto.
- Galaxy S10e: longer endurance, superior OLED brightness, wide + ultra‑wide cameras, but no telephoto and no 90Hz.
- Galaxy S10: often available at Pixel 4 prices, with all three cameras and a higher‑res display.
- OnePlus 7T: cheaper (~$600 / €600 / £550), 90Hz display without the weird refresh behavior, better battery life, higher performance, double the base storage, and a triple‑camera system. No official IP rating, but most enthusiasts will notice the value.
Pure Android and instant OS updates are still the Pixel’s unique selling point. If you care deeply about getting Android 11 and 12 the second they’re out, that weighs in its favor.
But the consensus even among reviewers who like the device is clear: at MSRP, the Pixel 4 is a tough recommendation.
Where the equation changes is discounts.
Pixels get price cuts, often aggressive ones. Knock $200 off and you’re suddenly looking at a compact phone with a 90Hz OLED, excellent stills camera, clean Android, and Recorder’s on‑device transcription, priced closer to its actual strengths.
Until those discounts hit, the Pixel 4 feels like a software showcase trapped in a battery‑constrained body.
