The OnePlus 7T is the mid-cycle refresh that should’ve made a lot of 2019 flagships nervous—and six-plus years later, owners are still bragging about how it runs “like butter.” For a phone that launched at $599, that’s not nostalgia talking, that’s OnePlus nailing fundamentals better than many current “value flagships.”

Design: Flat, Practical, and Aging Gracefully

The OnePlus 7T’s design is basically a polished evolution of the OnePlus 6/6T formula, not a radical reboot. You get a 6.55-inch flat “Fluid AMOLED” panel with a smaller notch than before, thinner bezels, and a taller 20:9 aspect ratio. OnePlus resisted the urge to curve the screen like the 7 Pro, and honestly, that aged incredibly well for anyone who hates accidental touches and light streaking on curved glass.

On the back, OnePlus kept the matte glass finish with a new Glacier Blue gradient that sits visually between the 6T’s Thunder Purple and the 7 Pro’s darker Nebula Blue. It’s still premium without screaming for attention. The standout change is the circular triple-camera island—very on-trend for the 2019-2020 era—but it still looks coherent instead of gimmicky.

The frame is polished metal that picks up the gradient tone, and because the display is flat, the sides are chunkier and easier to grip. Button placement is dialed in, and the physical alert slider remains one of those “once you have it, you miss it everywhere else” features. There’s no official IP rating, but in typical OnePlus fashion, the overall build feels ready to fight in the same league as bigger brands.

You don’t get a headphone jack, and there’s no 3.5mm dongle in the box. What you do get is a decent bundled TPU case, the big red OnePlus box with its over-earnest slogan, and Warp Charge hardware in the box—something a lot of modern OEMs would love to upsell you on.

Display: 90Hz “Fluid AMOLED” Before It Was Trendy

The 7T’s main headline back in 2019 was simple: bring the 7 Pro’s 90Hz experience to a cheaper, smaller, flat panel. The 6.55-inch 2400 x 1080 AMOLED might only be FHD+, but it pushes a 90Hz refresh rate that makes OxygenOS animations feel faster and more immediate than the raw specs would suggest.

OnePlus doesn’t do magic here—YouTube is still 60fps, and only supported games render above that—but UI scrolling, system transitions, and supported titles genuinely feel more responsive. In 2026, 90Hz is standard even on midrangers, but back then this was a genuine differentiator at $599.

The panel itself is no slouch either. In testing, it hit up to 743 nits with adaptive brightness enabled and around 525 nits without it, easily good enough for outdoor use. Minimum brightness can drop down to 2.2 nits, and with OxygenOS Night Mode you can push it to a ridiculous 0.4 nits for pitch-dark rooms.

Color science is handled with options—sRGB, Display P3, and a wide-gamut mode. Natural mode lands an average deltaE around 2.1, which is very solid, while Vivid pushes saturation slightly without turning everything into neon signage. Whites lean a bit cool by default, but you get enough tuning to make it work for you.

Bonus nerd touch: OnePlus hid the ambient light and proximity sensors under the display, right below the notch. You’ll only see them if you look hard under direct light, and that small decision helped shrink the bezels a bit further.

Performance and Battery: Snapdragon 855+ Still Has Teeth

Under the hood, the OnePlus 7T stepped up from the Snapdragon 855 to the Snapdragon 855+, effectively a factory overclock. The prime CPU core jumps to 2.96GHz (from 2.84GHz), while the Adreno 640 GPU gets a ~100MHz bump. Paired with 8GB of RAM as the base configuration and UFS 3.0 2-lane storage, this thing was built to stay fast.

In real-world terms, you’re not hitting those peak clocks in every app, but heavier games and GPU-bound workloads do benefit. In GFXBench, the 7T sat at the top of the Qualcomm crowd when it launched, especially in offscreen tests. Apple’s iPhones still pushed higher raw frame rates, but among Android phones with Snapdragon chips, the 7T was right up there.

The 3,800 mAh battery isn’t massive by today’s 5,000 mAh norm, but it holds up. OnePlus tested endurance at both 90Hz and 60Hz. Web browsing at 90Hz clocked about 12:11h, stretching to 12:51h at 60Hz. Video playback hit 18:11h at 90Hz and 19:19h at 60Hz. Not chart-topping, but more than usable, and the hit from 90Hz is noticeable but not catastrophic.

Charging is where the 7T still embarrasses some newer phones. Warp Charge 30T (30W) took the phone from 0 to 72% in 30 minutes and to 100% in roughly 1:16h. Forget to charge overnight? Twenty minutes while you’re getting ready will easily cover a typical workday.

Stereo audio also got attention: OnePlus beefed up the earpiece speaker so much they had to move the SIM tray to the bottom. The result is a louder-than-7-Pro output with clear sound and minimal distortion, even if treble can sound a bit thin.

OxygenOS and Software: Fast, Minimal, and Actually Thoughtful

The OnePlus 7T shipped with Android 10 and OxygenOS on top—arguably peak OxygenOS for many fans. The skin sticks close to stock while adding stuff people actually use.

You get Google’s gesture system (swipe up to home, swipe-and-hold for recents, edge-swipe for back) and lose OnePlus’s older bottom gesture nav, but you can still use traditional three-button controls if you’re stubborn. Quick Gestures remain for screen-off actions like double-tap to wake or drawing gestures to control music.

Customization is deeper than stock Android: you can tweak icon shapes, quick toggle shapes, accent colors, fonts, icon packs, and choose from multiple Ambient Display clock styles. Ambient Display itself becomes smarter with weather, media, DND status, and calendar events.

The OnePlus Shelf is still here as a left-page hub for shortcuts, recent apps, and even a parking reminder. Zen Mode gets more control with timers from 20 to 60 minutes and optional reminders, locking you out of everything except calls and camera when enabled—no cheating, even with a reboot.

Digital Wellbeing and Screen Recorder are baked in, and the in-display fingerprint reader is fast with optional animations you’ll barely see because it unlocks so quickly. There’s also face unlock, but with no 3D sensors, it’s convenience-first and not suitable for payments.

For gaming, Fnatic Mode can block notifications, cut off the secondary SIM, and crank CPU/GPU/RAM behavior for more consistent performance. It’s not as aggressive as full-on gaming phones, but it shows OnePlus was thinking beyond synthetic benchmarks.

Camera: Versatile, But Software Holds It Back

Camera hardware is where the 7T tried to match the 7 Pro’s flexibility without fully matching its quality. The main sensor is the familiar 48MP Sony IMX586 at f/1.6, paired with a 16MP ultra-wide (f/2.2, 117°) and a new 12MP f/2.2 2x telephoto. Unlike the 7 Pro, the 7T drops OIS on the telephoto and moves from 3x to 2x zoom.

Daylight shots from the main camera are generally good: solid dynamic range, accurate colors, and overall pleasing images. The problem starts when you zoom in. OnePlus leans heavily on noise reduction and compression, which smears fine detail and can give that watercolor look in gradients and textures. You can shoot at native 48MP in Pro mode, but out of the box you’re getting 12MP binned shots with that tuning baked in.

The 2x telephoto is a mixed bag. At a glance, images look fine with decent color and DR, but up close you see aliasing and interpolation artifacts. It feels like OnePlus is upsampling from a slightly lower native resolution, similar to what they’ve done before. The end result isn’t massively better than just cropping into the 48MP main sensor. Compared to the 7 Pro’s 3x OIS telephoto, the 7T’s 2x feels like a downgrade in reach and precision.

The ultra-wide is exactly what you’d expect from that era: big field of view, but softer detail, visible noise in the shadows, and distortion at the edges. The good news is color, contrast, and dynamic range match the main camera well enough that you can mix focal lengths without your gallery looking like three different phones.

Low light tells a similar story. The main camera produces well-exposed shots with good color, but again, detail softness and aggressive processing keep it from challenging Huawei, Google, or Apple’s best efforts from that time. Nightscape helps in darker scenes, especially for indoor and city lighting, improving exposure and DR, but it trades even more fine detail for cleaner-looking images. Don’t pixel-peep and you’ll be happy.

Nightscape on the ultra-wide is actually a big win, pulling that lens from “barely usable” to “social-media fine” in low light. The telephoto, however, falls apart quickly once light drops; without OIS and with that processing pipeline, low-light zoom shots just aren’t worth your effort.

Portrait mode can use either the main or telephoto camera. The 2x portraits generally look better, with more flattering compression and less distortion. Edge detection is passable—not excellent—but good enough for most people shots. The front camera, shared with the 7 and 7 Pro, produces slightly soft but decent selfies with mostly accurate skin tones and a reasonably competent portrait mode powered by software-only depth detection.

Super Macro mode is a fun extra. It uses the ultra-wide’s autofocus to focus between 2.5cm and 8cm from your subject. When it locks focus correctly, you get sharp, colorful close-ups with natural bokeh. The problem is that autofocus on this lens is slow and occasionally misses, especially with moving subjects like flowers in the wind. Shooting a bit further away often gives better results than being at the minimum distance.

Video tops out at 4K 30/60 on the main camera, 4K 30 on the telephoto, and 1080p 30 on the ultra-wide. 4K 30 from the main sensor looks good in terms of detail and color; 1080p 30 is solid if you don’t strictly need 4K. Telephoto 4K looks suspiciously like upscaled 1080p, and the ultra-wide 1080p is soft but usable if you prioritize FOV over sharpness.

Value and Legacy: Half the Price of an iPhone, Full Flagship Attitude

When it launched at $599, the OnePlus 7T cost literally half as much as an iPhone 11 Pro Max in the US. That positioned it against phones like the Galaxy S10 and S10+, Asus Zenfone 6, Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro/Redmi K20 Pro, and even discounted Huawei P30 Pro units.

Against Samsung’s S10 line, the 7T gave you a larger 6.55-inch 90Hz AMOLED versus Samsung’s smaller QHD 60Hz panels. Samsung had the sharper screen and wireless charging; OnePlus countered with speed, price, and a smoother UI.

The Asus Zenfone 6 offered a 5,000 mAh battery, a flip-out camera, and Snapdragon 855 at the same $599 price, trading AMOLED and 90Hz for endurance and quirky hardware. Xiaomi’s Mi 9T Pro/Redmi K20 Pro undercut the 7T with similar specs plus a headphone jack, but MIUI is a love-it-or-hate-it skin.

The P30 Pro, once pushed down in price by the US-Huawei ban, delivered a more versatile camera setup with 5x optical zoom and larger battery, plus reverse wireless charging. But you also had to accept ongoing uncertainty around software and ecosystem.

In that crowd, the OnePlus 7T stood out because it didn’t try to win every spec war. Instead, it doubled down on speed, display quality, clean software, and fast charging. And based on 2026 owners calling it their “best investment in a phone” and still using it as a secondary device with minimal lag, that approach worked.

The camera never quite hit the consistency enthusiasts wanted, and the lack of OIS on the telephoto remains a head-scratcher. But the 7T delivered a flagship-like everyday experience at a non-flagship price—and that’s exactly the kind of device the current Android market doesn’t have enough of.
