I’ve handled a lot of big Android slabs over the last decade, but the first time I picked up a Pixel 3 XL, my brain did a double-take. In the same second I thought, “that notch is hideous” and “this back feels incredible.” That split reaction never fully went away, and it sums up the Pixel 3 XL pretty well: genuinely smart ideas wrapped in some very questionable decisions.
Looking back at this phone now, without launch hype and marketing noise, you can see exactly where Google was aiming with hardware-as-a-service: sell you clever software first, bolt on just enough hardware to get away with it. Sometimes that works. On the Pixel 3 XL, it only half does.
Design: Giant Notch, Great Texture, Annoying Details
For a 2018 flagship, the Pixel 3 XL checks the basic modern design boxes: 6.3-inch OLED, tall 18.5:9 aspect ratio, glass back, and IP68 rating. But Google’s design team clearly got… creative.
The front is dominated by an unusually tall notch and a thick chin. Together they eat up two lines of status bar space at the top and a big slice of bezel at the bottom. Even after weeks of use you stop consciously seeing it, but that doesn’t magically turn it into a good design — it just becomes tolerable.
Google at least has a reason for the notch: dual front cameras, a large earpiece speaker, ambient light and proximity sensors all crammed into that space. The matching chin houses the second front speaker. Functional, sure, but this is easily one of the least attractive flagship fronts of its era.
Flip the phone over and things get much better. Google ditched the old glass-and-metal hybrid and went with a single sheet of glass on the back, etching the lower two-thirds to recreate the classic two-tone Pixel look. That etched glass has a silky, almost aluminum-like texture that feels fantastic and looks genuinely unique.
The catch: it scuffs absurdly easily. The black model in particular shows marks quickly, and washing under running water — a “fix” some YouTube videos push — doesn’t actually solve it long term. Realistically, you either buy the lighter colors or you put it in a case and forget you ever paid for that nice texture.
There are also small but annoying build details. The SIM tray on the bottom doesn’t sit flush with the frame and you can both see and feel it sticking out slightly. It probably won’t kill the IP68 rating, but on a premium device this expensive, sloppy tolerance like that is hard to forgive.
Display & Audio: Better Than Pixel 2 XL, Still Not Class-Leading
On paper, the 6.3-inch 2960×1440 OLED panel (from Samsung) is a big step up from the Pixel 2 XL, and in many ways it is. In the Natural color profile, accuracy is solid, and there’s a Boosted profile if you like a bit more saturation. No obvious burn-in, no dirty screen effect.
But there are clear compromises. Viewing angles are only okay; tilt it off-axis and the screen shifts to a noticeably cool tone. Dark grays tend to go greenish, a quirk that shows up on other Samsung OLED phones of that era as well. Outdoors, brightness is mediocre — you’ll be at max brightness just to keep things readable.
Google supports DCI-P3 and system-level color management, but Android apps largely ignore wide color. That’s a software ecosystem gap, not a panel problem, and it leaves the hardware underused compared to Apple’s wide-color pipeline where third-party apps actually take advantage of it.
HDR support exists, but the content story is underwhelming in this snapshot: only YouTube plays HDR, while Netflix and Prime Video don’t even do HD yet on this device. That’s a ridiculous limitation for a “flagship” when you’re trying to sell people on the screen.
Usability also takes a hit from poor palm rejection. With the display going right up into the corners around the notch, it’s extremely easy to trigger touches accidentally, especially in landscape.
The stereo speakers are loud and front-facing, but not balanced. The notch speaker is noticeably quieter than the chin one, so landscape orientation sounds lopsided. Worse, the entire chassis vibrates aggressively with audio, which gets tiring quickly even at moderate volumes.
No headphone jack, of course. Google includes a USB‑C to 3.5mm adapter that sounds fine and a pair of USB‑C earbuds that sound, frankly, terrible compared to what Samsung, LG, and HTC have bundled.
Software & Features: Smart Ideas, Half-Measure Gestures
The Pixel 3 XL ships with Android 9 Pie and Google’s Pixel UI — not true “stock Android”, but a clean, opinionated skin on top. Even in this snapshot, the phone is already lagging on security patches (stuck on September while competitors like the OnePlus 6T are on November), which is not what you expect from Google’s own device.
Pie brings the gesture-ish navigation bar: a home pill, a back button, and a bunch of swipes. Swipe up once for Overview, again for the app drawer, or long-swipe for the drawer directly. It’s different, but not clearly better. The navigation bar still eats screen space, and the whole system feels like a halfway stop instead of a proper all-gesture approach.
Where Google flexes is in the smart features. Call Screen lets the Assistant answer calls for you and shows a live transcript so you can decide to pick up, hang up, or mark spam — extremely useful in the spam-call era. Duplex restaurant and appointment booking is slated to roll out to Pixels next, automating those annoying calls.
There’s also Now Playing (offline song recognition on the lockscreen), Active Edge squeeze gestures for Assistant and silencing calls/alarms, and Digital Wellbeing tools like app timers, Wind Down, and grayscale.
The always-on display is simple but actually useful, with time, date, weather, and tiny notification icons. Haptics are another highlight: the vibration motor delivers precise, subtle feedback for UI actions, much closer to iPhone-level than most Android phones of that time.
Oddly, there’s no face unlock at all — not even a basic one — so you’re fully reliant on the rear fingerprint reader. The sensor itself is fast and accurate, and you can swipe down on it to pull down the notification shade, which is handy on a tall phone.
Performance, RAM, and Storage: Fast Until It Isn’t
Under the hood, the Pixel 3 XL runs a slightly underclocked Snapdragon 845: 2.5GHz performance cores and 1.6GHz efficiency cores instead of the usual 2.8GHz/1.8GHz. Day-to-day UI performance is generally smooth and responsive thanks to Google’s software tuning.
The real problem isn’t CPU, it’s memory. Google ships this “flagship” with 4GB of RAM, and it shows. The phone is extremely aggressive about killing background apps. Keep four or five apps open and you’re at the limit; open the Camera app and it behaves like a full system clear-all. You don’t even need to shoot — launching the camera alone is enough to flush your last-used app out of memory.
For users who multitask heavily or bounce between messaging, media, and productivity apps, that’s not just a spec sheet nitpick — it actively drags down the experience.
Storage is similarly conservative at 64GB or 128GB, with no microSD slot. Competitors at the time were shipping up to 512GB plus expansion. Google’s answer is unlimited full-quality cloud backup for photos and videos shot on the phone for three years, which helps if your biggest files are from the camera. But if you keep local lossless music, large offline libraries, or big files, it’s easy to hit the ceiling.
Thermals are another weak spot. Under heavy loads like AR effects in the camera, the phone heats up quickly enough to start throttling, and video frame rates drop. That’s a repeat of the Pixel 2’s behavior and not something you want on a device that heavily markets its AR tricks.
Camera: Google’s Software Magic Carries Hard
The main reason people still talk about the Pixel 3 XL is its camera. On the back you get a single 12MP f/1.8 sensor with dual-pixel phase detection autofocus and OIS, capable of 4K 30fps video. No telephoto, no ultra-wide — this phone leans completely on computational photography.
Google’s HDR+ pipeline continuously captures frames, stacks them when you hit the shutter, and underexposes to protect highlights, then lifts shadows while using stacking to crush noise. The result is that signature Pixel look: slightly darker exposure, strong contrast, cooler white balance, and high dynamic range that still looks more natural than earlier generations.
Image quality is excellent overall and a refinement over Pixel 2 rather than a huge leap. Low light shots are decent but not noise-free; zooming in on a bigger display exposes grain in the shadows, and heavy editing can push that noise over the edge.
Super Res Zoom is one of the smarter tricks here. Using OIS micro-movements and computational processing, the phone produces 2x–5x digital zoom shots that look surprisingly close to true optical zoom at 2x. For casual viewing and social sharing, 2x zoom images often hold up as well as optical zoom from competing phones.
Portrait mode combines dual-pixel depth data with AI edge detection. Subject separation is excellent, often better than dual-camera implementations that rely purely on stereoscopic depth. It works on objects as well as people. The simulated background blur, however, can be too strong and less natural than the iPhone XS series, with less nuanced depth transitions and no live preview.
Google also auto-saves both the Portrait-processed shot and the original, with no option to change this, and each set gets its own folder on internal storage. If you use any third-party gallery or browse over USB, you end up with a mess of tiny folders for each Portrait shot.
Top Shot tries to save you from blink and weird-face photos by picking a better frame from the burst buffer if it detects an issue in your main shot. The suggested frame is lower resolution than the primary, but often better than keeping a ruined image.
Night Sight — Google’s heavily marketed extreme low-light mode — is referenced but not yet actually rolled out in this snapshot, so we don’t get real-world results here.
Video tops out at 4K 30fps. You can do 60fps at 720p or 1080p, but only via an Auto setting that switches between 30 and 60 depending on light; there’s no way to lock 60fps. Slow motion offers 1080p120 and 720p240 as 1/4x and 1/8x options. Stabilization is excellent in most cases, though fast pans can confuse the algorithm and cause jerkiness.
Overall, the Pixel 3 XL camera system still represents some of the best use of software to push a single sensor. But the missing 4K60, overly aggressive Portrait file handling, and unresolved low-frequency light flicker issues under 50Hz fluorescent lighting show there was still plenty of room for refinement.
Battery and Charging: Average Endurance, Painfully Slow “Fast” Charging
With a 3430mAh battery, the Pixel 3 XL lands squarely in “fine but unremarkable” territory. Expect around 4–5 hours of screen-on time and roughly 18–20 hours from unplug to recharge under typical mixed use. The big OLED panel and heavy camera compute clearly take their toll.
Where things really fall apart is charging speed. The included 18W USB Power Delivery brick is technically “fast charging”, but in practice it’s one of the slowest modern implementations.
In testing, 30 minutes on the charger nets only about 25% battery. An hour gets you around 45%. A full charge stretches close to three hours. That’s barely better than old-school charging and compares especially badly to OnePlus’ Dash Charge and even modern iPhones when paired with higher-wattage bricks.
Google’s charge curve is conservative — likely to preserve long-term battery health — but from a user standpoint, it makes topping up in a hurry a chore.
Wireless charging is supported, but with more caveats. You need Google’s own Pixel Stand to get the full 10W speed; third-party 10W chargers fall back to slower charging. That’s the opposite of what Apple is doing with the iPhones, which are more open with fast wireless support.
Value and Who This Phone Is Really For
Strip away the brand and this is how the Pixel 3 XL looks: excellent camera, smart software tricks, good (if imperfect) display, loud but flawed speakers, average battery, slow charging, weak RAM and storage story, and a polarizing design with real durability concerns on the back.
The price, however, is very much premium. Meanwhile, rivals offer more RAM, larger and more flexible storage options, faster charging, and more polished hardware for less money, or at least for the same price with better after-sales support and resale value.
That doesn’t make the Pixel 3 XL a bad phone, but it makes it a niche recommendation. You’d have to value Google’s camera pipeline, Call Screen, Duplex, Live HDR+ in third-party apps, Now Playing, and the general Pixel software experience enough to overlook the hardware compromises and long-term trade-offs.
If you live inside Google’s ecosystem, love computational photography, and don’t juggle a ton of apps at once, you can absolutely live happily with this phone — scuffed back, lopsided speakers, and all. For everyone else, especially value-focused buyers, the math just doesn’t land in Google’s favor.
