Huawei P30 Pro in 2025: Legendary Camera, Flawed Flagship

Everyone still calls the Huawei P30 Pro a camera legend. I’m not arguing with the photos – I’m arguing with everything Huawei sacrificed to get there.

Design: Gorgeous Curves, Practical Headaches

Huawei didn’t reinvent the wheel with the P30 Pro’s design. It’s the usual dual-glass sandwich with aggressively curved sides and a tall 158 x 73.4 x 8.41 mm footprint at 192g. In the hand it feels smaller than it is, but it’s also exactly what you’d expect from a 2019 glass flagship: slippery, fragile, and stunning until fingerprints take over.

The color options are admittedly striking. Aurora and Breathing Crystal lean hard into the gradient trend Huawei helped popularize, while Amber Sunrise, Pearl White, and Black cover the basics. The black model looks clean but smudges instantly; if you hate microfiber cloths, pick one of the lighter finishes.

Practicality is less impressive. The rear camera hump is massive and shoved into the top-left corner, causing serious wobble on a flat surface unless you throw a case on. The phone is IP68-rated and the front and back glass are curved, but Huawei still won’t say what glass supplier it’s using. That’s not confidence-inspiring when you’re dealing with this much exposed shiny surface.

Display & Acoustic Screen: Smart Idea, Real Trade-Offs

On paper, the 6.47″ HDR AMOLED looks solid: 2340 x 1080, 19.5:9, ~399ppi. It peaks at around 605 nits in auto mode and 570 nits manually – more than bright enough outdoors, with excellent contrast and very low 2-nit minimum brightness for night use. Color tuning is flexible with Normal vs Vivid profiles and warm/cold tweaks, though accuracy in DCI-P3 tops out at an average deltaE of 3.5, so this isn’t a color-critical panel.

Huawei’s decision to stick with 1080p instead of 1440p is defensible from a battery and GPU standpoint, but let’s not pretend it’s flagship-tier screen tech. Samsung and others were already shipping sharper QHD OLEDs at the same time.

The bigger experiment is the so-called “acoustic” display – no physical earpiece, the whole screen vibrates via bone conduction to handle calls. The upside: cleaner top bezel and surprisingly deep, clear call audio that actually holds up in noisy places like clubs. The sweet spot is a couple of centimeters below the selfie camera, but volume is fairly consistent even if you don’t hit it perfectly.

The downside? No earpiece means no stereo speakers. You get a single bottom-firing loudspeaker. It’s loud and relatively rich, but mono is mono, especially when Samsung was pushing proper stereo setups in the same era. Sound still leaks at high volumes, too – not worse than most regular earpieces, but certainly not the privacy win the marketing implies.

The under-display optical fingerprint scanner is one of the few clear wins. It’s fast, accurate, and lights up when you pick up the phone so you don’t have to chase the target area. Face unlock exists but is just camera-based, so anyone who cares about security should ignore it.

Performance, Battery, and Audio: Strong Numbers, Odd Decisions

Kirin 980 is no slouch. The 7nm SoC combines 2x Cortex-A76 at 2.6GHz, 2x A76 at 1.92GHz, and 4x A55 at 1.8GHz, paired with a Mali-G76 MP10 GPU. In multi-core workloads it hangs with contemporary Snapdragon 855 and Exynos 9820 phones, though single-core lags behind Apple and Samsung’s custom cores.

GPU performance isn’t chart-topping, but paired with a 1080p display, it’s enough to keep every current title smooth. GPU Turbo 2.0 support is limited to a handful of games like PUBG Mobile, Arena of Valor, and Vainglory; Huawei claims steady 60fps, but the feature list is short and very much a marketing checkbox.

Performance Mode adds about 10–12% in benchmarks for the first few minutes before thermal limits kick in, after which you get a more realistic ~5% gain. In return you get extra heat and more battery drain. There’s no magic here – just a brute-force boost that’s marginal in real use.

Battery life is the opposite story: genuinely excellent. The 4,200 mAh cell plus 40W SuperCharge delivers 0–70% in 30 minutes, ~90% in 45, and a full charge in about an hour. Endurance testing lands around 20+ hours of looping video, 14+ hours of web browsing, and 27 hours of 3G calls, yielding a 100-hour endurance rating. That’s flagship-grade even by 2025 standards.

Wireless charging goes up to 15W, and reverse wireless charging is there for topping up accessories or another phone in a pinch. It’s not something you’ll use daily, but it works as advertised.

Then we hit the audio and expansion compromises. There’s no 3.5mm jack, and Huawei doesn’t even include a USB-C-to-3.5mm dongle in the box. The analog-out performance via a passive adapter is just okay: good clarity but middling loudness, more crosstalk with headphones, and a light hit to distortion. For a premium device, that’s underwhelming.

Storage expansion uses Huawei’s proprietary NM (Nano Memory) card format, not microSD. That means worse availability, higher prices, and vendor lock-in – all for very little consumer benefit.

EMUI 9.1 and EROFS: Faster, Still Fussy

The P30 Pro ships with EMUI 9.1 on top of Android 9 Pie. Visually, it’s the same EMUI you know: iOS-style single-layer home screen by default (with an optional app drawer), Magazine lockscreen, heavy theming options, and Huawei’s particular approach to notifications and settings organization.

The interesting change is under the hood: the EROFS file system. Huawei claims up to 3x faster random reads, 10% quicker app launches, and 20% less storage consumed by system files. In practice, the phone feels snappy and responsive, but this is evolutionary smoothness, not some night-and-day leap.

EMUI keeps throwing features at you: GPU Turbo 2.0, Password Vault, Digital Balance for screen-time management, HiVision for AR-ish translation and food/landmark recognition, Huawei Share for PC and printer integration, and a full suite of in-house apps (Music, Health, Files, Smart Remote for the IR blaster). Some are actually useful, like Smart Remote and Huawei Share; others are classic feature-bloat.

Gesture navigation mimics Apple: swipe up for Home, up-and-hold for multitasking, and swipe from either edge for Back. It works, but Huawei still wastes the viewfinder in the camera app by not using more intuitive swipe gestures there. Face unlock, again, is convenience-first with obvious security trade-offs.

Camera: Brilliant Results, Marketing Fog

Here’s where the P30 Pro earns its reputation – and where Huawei also plays the hardest with numbers.

The rear setup combines:
– 40MP Sony IMX600y “SuperSensing” main camera (RYYB Quad-Bayer), f/1.6, OIS, 27mm
– 20MP ultra-wide, f/2.2, 16mm, AF + Super Macro
– 8MP periscope telephoto, ~125mm f/3.4, OIS, marketed as 5x optical
– ToF sensor for depth and AF assistance

The main 40MP sensor outputs 10MP images by default via pixel binning. The new RYYB filter swaps green for yellow sub-pixels, with Huawei claiming up to 40% more light capture versus RGGB. Combined with the brighter f/1.6 lens and OIS, low-light shots are excellent: clean, detailed, with well-controlled noise and strong dynamic range. Night Mode stacks multiple frames handheld to brighten skies and recover shadows; in many scenes, the difference vs auto isn’t huge, but when it kicks in, it’s genuinely useful.

Daylight shots from the main camera are among the best in their generation: high detail, mature processing, and a toned-down Master AI that no longer turns grass nuclear green or skies cartoon blue. If you really want resolution, 40MP mode can sometimes pull out more texture, but results are inconsistent enough that you’re better off shooting both 10MP and 40MP on important shots.

The ultra-wide 20MP shooter is good in daylight: pleasing colors, solid dynamic range, and manageable distortion. As usual, corners are softer and chromatic aberration is visible if you pixel-peep. Low light is where this lens struggles – f/2.2 and no OIS translate to smeared detail and frequent blur in regular auto mode. Night Mode, however, rescues a lot with longer multi-second stacks that output 10MP images. Colors get a bit washed out, but if you absolutely need a night ultra-wide, Night Mode is mandatory.

The periscope telephoto is the headline feature and the most over-marketed. Huawei sells it as 5x optical (and 10x hybrid, 50x digital), but the actual 35mm equivalent is around 125mm – roughly 4.6x over the 27mm main lens. EXIF sometimes reports 135mm, which doesn’t help the confusion. In practice, though, the 5x images are legitimately impressive at 10MP: sharp, detailed, and color-matched well to the main sensor when there’s enough light.

10x hybrid is where quality starts to slide. You can reproduce similar results by cropping the 5x shot yourself, but in-camera zooming can help with metering and exposure for distant subjects. 50x is pure novelty – fine for reading far-away signs, unusable as actual photography.

Portraits benefit heavily from the ToF sensor. Subject separation is among the cleanest on any phone of its era, with consistent edge detection on hair and more complex outlines. Portrait mode locks blur strength but offers gimmicky bokeh shapes and lighting presets, while Aperture mode lets you refocus and adjust simulated f/0.95–f/16 after the fact, even on non-human subjects. For anyone who cares about flexibility over filters, Aperture mode is the smarter choice.

The 32MP front camera delivers detailed, well-exposed selfies with effective AI HDR+. But it’s fixed-focus, and the sweet spot isn’t exactly arm’s length for taller users – you may have to tweak your pose to avoid softness. Portrait separation from the front camera is clearly worse than the rear: expect missing hair strands and clipped ears when effects get aggressive.

Video is a mixed bag. You get up to 4K30 and 1080p60, with EIS + OIS on the main and tele lenses and EIS-only on ultra-wide. 4K from the main camera has great dynamic range and color, but detail isn’t class-leading, partly due to a conservative ~26Mbps bitrate and potentially always-on EIS. 1080p30 looks fine; 1080p60 drops detail.

Low-light video is where the RYYB sensor and OIS really pay off. Clips are bright, detailed for the conditions, and relatively clean. Telephoto 4K and 1080p30 video is usable and uniquely capable in terms of reach, but 4K sharpness is soft – almost certainly upscaled, given the 8MP sensor. Ultra-wide video trails behind in detail and dynamic range, with 60fps modes essentially not worth using.

Verdict: Camera King, Consumer Compromises

Strip away the hype and the Huawei P30 Pro is exactly this: one of the most versatile and capable smartphone cameras of its generation, bolted onto a flagship that makes too many trade-offs.

You get:
– Excellent main camera photos and low-light performance
– Genuinely useful 5x telephoto and solid 0.6x ultra-wide
– Strong battery life and very fast 40W charging
– IP68 protection and a premium-feeling design

You also give up or live with:
– No stereo speakers thanks to the acoustic display experiment
– No headphone jack and no bundled USB-C audio adapter
– Mediocre analog audio output via dongle
– Proprietary NM card expansion instead of simple microSD
– Ultra-wide camera that’s shaky in low light without Night Mode

If camera versatility is your top priority, the P30 Pro still delivers in 2025. But as a complete flagship package, it’s far from flawless – and a lot of its pain points come from choices Huawei didn’t have to make.
