Galaxy S8 Review in 2026: Infinity Display, Finite Patience

Samsung once bragged that the Galaxy S8 fits roughly 40% more screen than an iPhone 7 into a body just 1mm wider. That stat still sounds wild, even years later.

The S8 is one of those phones you can look at in 2026 and immediately see the moment everything changed: bezels shrank, aspect ratios got weird, buttons died, and Samsung pushed software harder than it probably should have. It’s also a great reminder that sleek design doesn’t automatically equal good UX.

Below, I’m breaking the S8 down by the stuff that still matters: screen, performance, camera, software, and all the hardware quirks Samsung nailed — and the ones it absolutely didn’t.

Design & Ergonomics: Gorgeous, Narrow, and Slightly Annoying

On paper, the Galaxy S8 is basically a geometry flex. It measures 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0mm and weighs 155g, which makes it narrower than almost everything from its era, including Samsung’s own 5.1-inch S7. Yet Samsung squeezed in a 5.8-inch dual-curved “Infinity Display” with a 2960×1440 resolution and 18.5:9 aspect ratio.

That tall 18.5:9 panel is the whole point of this phone. You’re getting flagship screen area in a footprint that’s close to a 4.7-inch iPhone 7, and only about 3mm wider than a Sony Xperia Z5 Compact. In the hand, it actually feels small by modern standards, and single-handed use is realistic unless you’re constantly dragging down the notification shade.

The tradeoffs are obvious the second you flip it over. The physical Home button is gone, replaced with software keys and a pressure-sensitive virtual Home that triggers a localized haptic buzz when you hard-press that area. It’s clever, but also a reminder that, yes, you’re just poking glass.

The fingerprint sensor move, though, is flat-out bad. It’s shoved high up on the back, off-center next to the camera, and you will smudge the lens while blindly hunting for it. On the smaller S8 it’s merely irritating; on the S8+ it’s reach gymnastics. Samsung clearly wanted an under-display reader and punted when it didn’t land in time.

On the plus side, the glass-and-metal body is IP68 water resistant, front and back are Gorilla Glass 5, and there’s still a 3.5mm headphone jack next to USB-C. Color-matched polished aluminum frames and all-black fronts make the thing look like a pure slab of screen when it’s off. It’s fragile art, but it is art.

Display & HDR: The Panel That Set the Benchmark

Samsung’s 5.8-inch Super AMOLED here is not just hype copy — it was objectively one of the best phone displays ever tested at launch, and the numbers back that up.

Resolution is 2960×1440 in a 18.5:9 ratio, with a Diamond Pixel subpixel layout. Measured brightness hits about 440 nits in manual mode and ramps up to ~620 nits in auto under bright light. Minimum brightness is an eye-friendly 1.8 nits. Outdoor visibility is where it really pulls away: it topped previous sunlight legibility records, beating even the legendary Nokia 808 PureView in controlled tests.

Color-wise, Samsung went wide-gamut and then gave you actual control. The panel covers about 113% of DCI-P3 and 142% of sRGB and even grabbed the UHD Alliance “Mobile HDR Premium” certification. DisplayMate gave it an A+ rating. You get multiple color modes: AMOLED Cinema for accurate DCI-P3, Photo for near-Adobe RGB, and Basic for near-sRGB. In Basic mode, average deltaE is around 2 with a max of ~3.2 — that’s serious calibration for anyone who hates neon oversaturation.

HDR10 is supported (not Dolby Vision like the LG G6), and the hardware is ready for high dynamic range content even if the services took time to catch up. Early on, Netflix HDR was locked behind UHD devices, so the S8 didn’t qualify despite QHD+ resolution. Amazon promised to adjust its backend to support the S8 and G6.

The only real downside is content scaling. Standard 16:9 video means pillarboxing, 21:9 movies get some letterboxing, and you can choose between original aspect, stretch, or crop-to-fill. Cropping to 18.5:9 looks great but costs you some framing. For games, Samsung’s Game Tools can force full-screen, but that sometimes means UI edges get clipped.

Still, as a display to stare at all day — browsing, video, games — this panel basically defined what high-end OLED on a phone should look like.

Performance, Connectivity & Gaming: 10nm Muscle in a Tall Body

Inside, Samsung went all-in on 10nm silicon. Depending on the region you either get a Snapdragon 835 (Kryo 280 CPU + Adreno 540 GPU) or Exynos 8895 (custom Mongoose V2 cores + Cortex-A53 cluster, Mali-G71 MP20 GPU). RAM is 4GB in most markets, with some regions getting 6GB.

In synthetic tests, the Exynos S8/S8+ units land at or near the top of Android charts in GeekBench, Basemark OS II, and AnTuTu 6, trailing only Apple’s A10 in single-core. Multi-core benchmarks give the S8 a lead over Huawei’s Kirin 960, with Apple still dominating single-threaded.

Graphics are where things get interesting. The Mali-G71 MP20 is a serious GPU, but it’s being asked to push more pixels than a standard QHD device thanks to the extra height. On-screen performance dips in synthetic tests versus lower-res rivals, which is expected, but real-world games remain smooth because most titles dynamically lower detail before dropping frames.

The S8 is also a connectivity showpiece: Gigabit LTE (Cat.16 down, Cat.13 up), dual-band Wi-Fi ac, full GNSS support (GPS, GLONASS, BDS, Galileo), and Bluetooth 5 with support for dual audio outputs. MST and NFC keep Samsung Pay alive even on older mag-stripe terminals. USB-C is wired as USB 3.1, capable of 10 Gbit/s transfers and 4K60 video out via DisplayPort Alternate Mode.

In short: for gaming and network-heavy tasks, the S8 still behaves like a flagship, not a mid-ranger with a nice screen.

Battery & Audio: Efficient Chip, Mediocre Speaker

Battery capacity sits at 3,000mAh — the same as the S7, despite the S8 having roughly 19% more display area. The upside is the move to 10nm silicon, which helps efficiency.

After retesting a second unit, endurance scores landed at an 84-hour overall rating. Video playback improved to about 14.5 hours (just ~20 minutes shy of the S7), web browsing slightly outlasted the S7 by around 30 minutes, and 3G call time broke the 24-hour mark. In practice, that’s solid one-day performance with some buffer, but not multi-day stamina.

Fast charging comes via Samsung’s Adaptive Fast Charger (9V/1.67A or 5V/2A), still essentially Quick Charge 2.0 class, not the newer spec levels. You also get USB-C to full-size USB-A and microUSB adapters in the box, plus AKG-branded wired earbuds — an actual upgrade over the usual throwaway in-box headphones.

Where Samsung cheaped out is speakers. This is a single bottom-firing driver, scoring “Average” in loudness tests. On a phone that’s so heavily pitched as a media and gaming device, skipping stereo — even the lazy “earpiece as second speaker” trick — feels like a miss.

The flip side: headphone output is excellent. Through the 3.5mm jack, the S8 delivers clean, loud audio with low distortion and minimal stereo crosstalk. Software features like SoundAlive (9-band EQ), Adapt Sound hearing calibration, UHQ upscaling, and virtual surround give you real tuning options if you care about audio quality.

Camera: Familiar Hardware, Smarter Processing

On paper, the rear camera looks like a copy-paste from the S7: 12MP, Dual Pixel phase-detect AF, f/1.7 lens around 26mm equiv., OIS, and single LED flash. Samsung chose not to chase dual-camera madness here, saving that for another day.

Under the hood, though, the processing changed. The big addition is “Multi-Frame Image Processing,” essentially stacking multiple frames into a single shot, similar in concept to Google’s HDR+ on the Pixel. Instead of needing to toggle anything, the S8 quietly captures several images, compares them pixel by pixel, and merges for higher detail and lower noise.

Daylight shots are what you’d expect from a Samsung flagship: sharp (sometimes aggressively sharpened), with strong dynamic range and generally punchy colors. HDR is conservative — often “On” and “Off” look similar unless you’re dealing with savage contrast — but the Auto mode tends to pick the right scenes.

Low light is where the stacking actually matters. With the right shutter speeds (Samsung’s lab scene uses 1/10s on a tripod), detail stays high and noise stays under control. It’s not night-vision magic, but it’s forward progress on an already solid S7 baseline.

Pro mode is properly done: manual ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure comp, metering, and manual focus with focus peaking. RAW capture is available if you want to fix Samsung’s color and sharpening decisions yourself.

The 8MP front camera is a real upgrade over the old 5MP fixed-focus module. You get autofocus, f/1.7 aperture, Auto HDR, and a laundry list of face-smoothing and face-warping tricks (Large Eyes, Slim Face, spotlight effects). Out of the box, some beautification is enabled; you’ll want to dial it back unless you like the airbrushed look.

Video capture hits 4K30 at ~48 Mbps with stereo audio, plus 1080p60 at ~28 Mbps. EIS now works up to 4K, layered on top of OIS, which cleans up handheld clips significantly versus the S7 at 4K. Full HD looks even more stable and drops the wobble artifacts seen in stabilized 4K. The downside? All modes are capped at 10 minutes per clip, a limit the S7 series didn’t have.

Overall, the S8 camera isn’t a massive spec leap, but the smarter processing keeps it in flagship territory.

Software, Bixby & DeX: Ambition Meets Reality

The S8 launched on Android Nougat with Samsung’s refreshed “Samsung UX” (Grace UX quietly retired with the Note7). The interface is flatter, whiter, and more cohesive than the old TouchWiz era, and Samsung actually takes advantage of the tall screen instead of just stretching old layouts.

Always On Display returns with multiple clock, calendar, and image layouts, and it now doubles as a way to show the virtual Home hitbox even when the screen is off. The lockscreen supports rich Nougat-style bundled notifications with direct reply, and you can customize the two bottom shortcuts.

Unlock options are overkill in quantity and underwhelming in ergonomics. You get:

  • Rear fingerprint sensor (always on, but badly placed and not the fastest)
  • Iris recognition (fast in most lighting, struggles in direct sunlight)
  • Face recognition (picky with backlighting)
  • Traditional PIN, pattern, password, or swipe

You can pair fingerprint with either iris or face, but not both at once. If you enable iris/face to auto-scan on wake, you skip the lockscreen and its notifications entirely, which kind of defeats the point of a rich lock UI.

Home and app drawer behavior is more flexible. Swiping up or down anywhere on the homescreen opens the app drawer; you can optionally bring back a classic Apps button. Grid size is configurable, icons get Samsung’s “Light and Line” look, and third-party icons can be dropped into shape masks if you care about visual consistency.

Multitasking is an area where Samsung was ahead of stock Android and still is. Split-screen lets you resize windows to pretty much any ratio, swap panes, and even float extra popup apps on top. There’s also a clever mode where you crop a strip of an app (say, a ticker or chat) and dock it to the top/bottom as a persistent mini-view.

Edge panels are still divisive. You can pull in app shortcuts, contacts, tasks, device maintenance, Smart Select for screen grabs and text recognition, and more. Edge feeds are gone; Edge lighting remains as a face-down notification halo along the curved sides.

Secure Folder is one of the more genuinely useful features: a hardware-backed encrypted environment with its own apps, files, accounts, and even call logs. You can clone apps into it, run a second Google account, and hide the folder itself for stealth.

For gamers, Game Launcher and Game Tools do real work. They collect all installed games in one place, suppress notifications while playing, block edge touches and the pressure-sensitive Home area, and let you capture screenshots or record gameplay up to 1080p. With the S8’s odd aspect ratio, Samsung also offers per-game forced fullscreen, which crops 16:9 content to fill 18.5:9.

Then there’s Bixby.

Bixby Home lives on the left-most home pane or behind the dedicated Bixby button. It’s a card-based feed similar to old-school Google Now, populated by Samsung and third-party apps like Spotify, Twitter, Foursquare, and Uber. Cards can be pinned, hidden, or disabled, and Bixby can surface them based on time, location, and activity.

Bixby Reminder doubles as a smart todo list and context-aware bookmark system. You can share photos, webpages, or videos to Reminder and have the S8 nudge you later at a time or place, then jump you straight back into that content at the right timestamp.

Bixby Vision is Samsung’s shot at AR object recognition. Categories include Shopping, Places, Text, Wine, Image search, and QR codes. Performance is mixed: text and QR are fine, image search can find similar shapes and patterns, and shopping/wine results are often all over the place. You usually need to manually adjust the detection box for anything useful.

Bixby Voice, outside Korea at launch, basically wasn’t there yet — which undercuts the whole “talk to your phone to do everything touch can” story Samsung was selling.

Lastly, DeX: the $150 desktop dock.

Plug the S8 into DeX and you get a 1080p desktop-style UI on an external monitor, complete with a taskbar, app drawer, windowed apps, keyboard shortcuts (Alt+Tab, Ctrl+C/V, Alt+F4), and proper notification handling. The dock itself offers HDMI 2.0 (up to 4K30 output, though DeX UI locks to 1080p), Ethernet (100Mbps), and two USB 2.0 ports for peripherals, plus a cooling fan that barely kicks in.

Most Android apps run in freeform windows, and Samsung’s own apps scale well. Microsoft Office apps look native, but there’s a catch: to actually create or edit documents on the external display, you need an Office 365 subscription. On the phone screen alone, those same apps let you edit for free, which makes the restriction feel like pure licensing nonsense.

Between the 1080p cap, USB 2.0 ports, 100Mbps Ethernet, and Office paywall, DeX ends up more tech demo than laptop replacement. It’s functional, occasionally impressive, but not the productivity revolution Samsung wanted it to be.

Verdict: Compact Flagship, Big Compromises

The Galaxy S8 was billed as the compact flagship that didn’t compromise. That’s only half-true.

What you do get is obvious: one of the best AMOLED panels of its time, flagship 10nm SoCs, still-competitive cameras with smarter multi-frame processing, IP68 water resistance, a headphone jack with excellent audio output, and a legitimately pocketable body that crams in as much screen as physics would reasonably allow.

What you trade away is just as clear: a well-placed fingerprint reader, stereo speakers, and the peace of mind that comes with less glass and fewer curves. You also get drafted into Samsung’s software experiments — Bixby and DeX — that feel more like long-term bets than must-use features right now.

If you strip the Infinity Display hype and color options away, the S8’s core experience is closer to a refined S7 than a true generational leap. The design is new; the fundamentals are incremental. That’s not a bad thing, but it is a different story than the marketing.
