This is the compact Galaxy a lot of people say they want. But the way Samsung got there matters for your wallet, your charger drawer, and how long this thing actually feels flagship-grade.

Design: Premium Look, Strategic Plastic

After a couple years of safe, iterative slabs, the S21 family finally looked different. The camera island turned into a metal “peninsula” that flows into the frame, with those two-tone color options like Phantom Violet + gold frame that actually stand out without screaming.

On first touch, most people would call the S21 premium. Thin at 7.9mm, around 169–171g depending on 5G bands, IP68 rating, matte back that shrugs off fingerprints – the basics are covered.

But that back is polycarbonate, not glass. Samsung’s spin is obvious: lighter, more durable, more colors. And to be fair, they pulled off the illusion pretty well – in-hand it feels very close to frosted glass, closer to S20 FE than a cheap midranger.

The problem is positioning. This was launched as a full-fat flagship, priced like one, while Samsung used the materials downgrade to widen the gap to the Ultra and protect margins. You’re not getting a cheaper phone; you’re getting a cheaper bill of materials.

Flat display, slightly thicker bezels, no microSD slot, no headphone jack, SIM tray only for SIMs – this is the direction of travel for Samsung flagships. If you’re coming from an S10 or S20, it feels like a slow strip‑down disguised as minimalism.

Display: 1080p Is Fine, but It’s Still a Downgrade

On paper, the 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X looks strong: 1080 x 2400, 120Hz Adaptive refresh, HDR10+, Gorilla Glass Victus, claimed 1300 nits peak. In practice, it’s exactly what you’d expect from Samsung: punchy in Vivid mode, accurate in Natural, genuinely usable outdoors.

Brightness numbers back it up: around 416 nits manually indoors, ~856 nits when it boosts under harsh light. That’s in the same league as other high-end OLEDs from its generation.

The refresh logic is smarter than the S20’s. Adaptive mode pushes 120Hz while you’re interacting, then drops to 60Hz after a second or two of inactivity, and can go down to 48Hz in some scenarios. That helps the battery without killing the fluidity in the UI, browsers, or most social apps.

The weird bits: YouTube in the app sticks to 120Hz for 24fps video but locks to 60Hz for 30/60fps; watch YouTube in a browser and the display actually uses 48Hz. Netflix/Prime Video juggle between 120Hz UI and 60/120Hz during playback. Camera viewfinder and Google Maps are hard-capped at 60Hz. It’s clever enough, but also a patchwork of app-specific hacks.

The real consumer hit is resolution. S20 had 1440p; S21 drops to 1080p. Yes, on 6.2 inches 421ppi is sharp enough. No, most people won’t see pixels. But calling this an upgrade while shipping fewer pixels is just marketing gymnastics.

Performance: Exynos 2100 Is Better, Not Brilliant

Samsung shipped the S21 with two brains: Snapdragon 888 in the US/China, Exynos 2100 almost everywhere else. Both are 5nm, both use the same ARM core layout: 1x Cortex-X1, 3x Cortex-A78, 4x Cortex-A55.

On Exynos 2100, clocks are actually higher than Snapdragon’s: 1×2.9GHz + 3×2.8GHz + 4×2.2GHz, paired with Mali-G78 (14-core) GPU and LPDDR5 RAM. Storage is UFS 3.1, 128GB or 256GB, and that’s it – no microSD to bail you out later.

Benchmarks tell a mixed story:
– Big leap over the Exynos 990 from the S20
– Competitive in CPU, often in the SD865 / 865+ ballpark
– Excellent onscreen GFXBench results helped by 1080p resolution
– Middling in 3DMark versus 865+ devices

Translation: on paper, it was more evolution than domination. In real life, paired with 1080p/120Hz and a mature One UI 3.1, it feels fast and fluid. App launches, multitasking, gaming – no major pain points.

But there are trade-offs. The compact body and plastic back don’t help with heat dissipation; under sustained load or extended camera use, the area around the rear camera warms up. Not unusable, just a reminder that Samsung chased size and design more than sustained performance headroom.

Battery, Charging, and the Charger Samsung Took Away

Battery capacity stayed at 4,000mAh compared to S20, but real-world endurance jumped.

Tested in Adaptive 120Hz mode, the S21 hit:
– 27.5 hours of 3G voice calls
– ~11 hours of web browsing
– ~15 hours of offline video playback
– Overall endurance rating: 93 hours

That’s a huge improvement in calls, noticeable on video, and roughly flat on browsing versus S20. The combo of 5nm SoC and smarter refresh behavior clearly pays off.

Charging is where the consumer story gets ugly.

Samsung pulled an Apple:

The phone supports up to 25W USB Power Delivery with PPS. With Samsung’s 25W brick:

The speed itself is fine, not class-leading. The real issue is cost-shifting. Samsung talks carbon footprint while selling you the adapter separately, at wildly different MSRPs across regions. If greenwashing means more line items on your receipt, the environment isn’t the only thing being optimized.

Cameras: Same Hardware, Smarter Brains

On paper the S21 camera setup is basically a copy-paste from the S20:
– 12MP main, 1/1.76″, 1.8µm pixels, f/1.8, OIS
– 12MP ultra-wide, 1/2.55″, 1.4µm, 120° FOV, f/2.2, fixed focus
– 64MP “telephoto” with ~29mm equivalent lens, f/2.0, OIS, used for 3x hybrid zoom
– 10MP selfie, 1/3.24″, 1.22µm, f/2.2, autofocus

But image quality does shift thanks to the stronger ISP and Samsung’s newer processing.

Daylight photos from the main camera are classic Samsung but somewhat toned down: wide dynamic range, controlled saturation, very good detail, slightly less punchy than S20/S20+. Noise is a bit more visible than on those older models, especially if you pixel-peep, but not in a way that ruins shots.

The ultra-wide is sharper than last gen, still with narrower dynamic range than the main camera and some tendency to blow highlights. Distortion correction is on by default and worth leaving that way.

The 64MP sensor can shoot full-res 64MP frames with impressive detail and similar dynamic range to the 12MP main cam, at the cost of lower contrast. For 2x and 3x zoom, Samsung crops and upscales from that 64MP feed. At 2x it looks good; at 3x, detail drops and noise rises, but it’s still very usable for social sharing.

Low light is where things get more polarizing. The main camera in auto mode:
– Exposes well, wide dynamic range
– Keeps colors realistic rather than hyper-saturated
– Leaves a lot of grain – you get detail, but a gritty look

Night mode cleans up that noise and brightens shadows, but like every multi-frame stacker, it can smear fine detail in bright areas. Some users will love the cleaner output; others will miss the texture.

Ultra-wide at night without Night mode is rough – dark, noisy, soft. Flip on Night mode and it becomes usable: brighter, cleaner, meaningfully sharper than S20’s ultra-wide in the same conditions.

Telephoto at night is predictably limited by pixel size, but Night mode can salvage decent shots at 3x if there’s at least some ambient light.

Portrait mode (formerly Live Focus) is one of the S21’s stronger tricks. Using both the main and the 64MP module, the camera nails subject separation more often than not, even with messy hair or complex outlines. The default zoomed portrait uses the 64MP crop, giving flattering perspective and great detail.

Selfies are where Samsung swings harder. Same hardware as S20, very different processing:
– Much sharper, almost aggressively so – “old Pixel” vibes
– Wide dynamic range, solid backlit performance
– New complexion toggle (Natural vs Bright) instead of old warm/cool tone control

Portrait selfies look good overall but aren’t as clean around edges as rear portraits.

Video is mostly an S20 remix:

Ultra-wide 4K30 is a highlight: sharp for the FOV, good dynamic range, usable stabilization. Zoom video at 3x is decent too.

Director’s View is one of the few genuinely fun software additions – live feeds from all cameras, quick switching, and picture-in-picture or split-screen with the selfie cam. Limited to 1080p30, but for vlogging-style clips it works.

Bottom line: the S21 camera system is more iterative than innovative, but it’s reliable and versatile. The problem isn’t quality – it’s that a discounted S20 can get you 90–95% of it for less.

Software: One UI 3.1 Grows Up, Still Heavy but Thoughtful

Out of the box, the S21 shipped with Android 11 and One UI 3.1, plus Samsung’s then-new promise of three major OS updates (up to Android 14) and ongoing security patches.

One UI 3.1 is familiar if you’ve used any recent Samsung:
– Visually tweaked notification shade that now fully covers the screen
– Lock screen shortcuts restyled, plus a wellbeing widget to guilt-trip your screen time
– Simplified Always-on Display options
– Bigger, faster in-display ultrasonic fingerprint reader (Qualcomm gen 2) with much better hit-rate

Android 11 features are properly integrated:

– Continue apps on other devices for Samsung browser/Notes handoff
– Edge panels for shortcuts and tools
– Game Launcher to corral your titles and manage distractions

One subtle but important change: Samsung started letting users pick Google Discover as the leftmost home screen feed instead of Samsung’s own content feed. For people already in the Google ecosystem, that’s the right move.

Stereo speakers get a shout: earpiece + bottom driver, clean highs, clear vocals, but light on bass compared to iPhones. Vibration motor feels more refined and precise than older Galaxies – a small but daily quality-of-life bump.

Pricing, Value, and Why the S20 Still Haunts It

The S21 launched cheaper than the S20 on paper, but the math is messier once you add back what Samsung quietly removed:
– No charger
– No headphones (except in countries like France where regulators forced their hand)
– No microSD expansion
– Plastic back instead of glass
– 1080p instead of 1440p

In return, you get:
– Better battery life
– Cleaner, bolder design
– Slightly better camera processing
– Meaningful performance uplift on Exynos
– Better fingerprint reader and more refined software

That’s a trade that might be fine at midrange pricing. At flagship launch prices, it feels like the consumer is doing Samsung a favor, not the other way around.

The real comparison isn’t S21 vs iPhone 12 series or OnePlus 8 Pro; it’s S21 vs a discounted S20. The S20 still offers:
– Higher-res 1440p display
– Glass back
– microSD slot
– Similar camera hardware and broadly comparable image quality
– Included charger and bundled accessories
– Lower street price

S21’s endurance win is real, and the design is nicer. But if you’re hunting value, the older model frequently undercuts it while giving you more flexibility and fewer hidden costs.

Who Should Still Buy a Galaxy S21 5G?

If you’re in 2026 looking at an S21 on sale or second-hand, the pitch is pretty specific:
– You want a compact-ish Android flagship from the 5G, high-refresh era
– You care more about real-world battery life than raw display resolution
– You’re fine with no microSD and no charger in the box
– You like Samsung’s design language and One UI software ecosystem

If you’re instead hunting pure value or long-term flexibility, a well-priced S20 (or even S20 FE) makes more sense. You trade some battery gains for more features and usually lower cost.

The S21 5G is a very good phone built out of a lot of small compromises. The problem is those compromises mostly benefit Samsung’s product segmentation and margins, not you.
