The Galaxy Nexus Wasn’t excellent – But It Rewired Android

Everyone talks about the Galaxy Nexus like it was just a buggy developer toy for Ice Cream Sandwich, but that completely undersells how hard this thing reshaped Android – and where it quietly failed users.

It’s not some mythic flawless Nexus; it’s a phone that nailed the future of Android UX while making some brutal trade-offs in hardware, battery, and everyday usability.

Design: Minimalist Brilliance, Practical Compromises

The Galaxy Nexus arrived in a plain white box with the basics: charger, USB cable, and a pair of “premium” Samsung earbuds. No case, no MHL adapter, nothing extra – straight to the point, but also very barebones for what was supposed to be Android’s reference phone.

Physically, Samsung did something bold for the time. The 135.5 x 67.9 x 8.9 mm body with its 135g weight wrapped a 4.65″ Super AMOLED HD display and still stayed just a bit larger than the Galaxy S II. The trick: no hardware keys on the front, only two physical buttons total (power and volume). Everything else moved on-screen.

The curved glass and dark gray color scheme made it look almost anonymous – no chrome, no fake metal, just an understated slab. The back used a grippy plastic Samsung called “Hyper Skin” and the oleophobic front basically laughed at fingerprints. No metal frame, but you got light weight and genuinely good in-hand feel with one-hand use actually realistic for a 4.65″ phone.

Then the compromises start. Under the thin battery cover: a 1750mAh cell, SIM slot, and that’s it – no microSD expansion at all. The phone handled well, felt solid, looked unique. But Samsung clearly protected the Galaxy S II line by keeping storage and camera ambitions in check.

The 720p AMOLED Screen: Gorgeous, Dim, and Direction-Setting

On paper and in person, the 4.65″ Super AMOLED HD panel was the Galaxy Nexus’ headline spec. 720p resolution on a phone, around 316ppi, with the classic AMOLED infinite contrast and wide viewing angles. For an Android 4.0 UI that leaned into typography and dark themes, it was a excellent showcase.

The PenTile matrix is technically there, but at this pixel density it’s effectively invisible in normal use. Text looks sharp, photos look crisp, and 720p video can map 1:1 to the panel. This was the first globally available Android that made 720p feel native, not aspirational.

But the measurements tell a less flattering story: brightness was surprisingly low compared to something like the Galaxy Note. Side-by-side, the difference doesn’t look like the 73% gap the numbers suggest, but the screen simply wasn’t a brightness champion. Outdoors and in harsh lighting, this mattered.

For media, you got excellent black bars, rich colors, and that cinematic contrast – then ran straight into another limitation: Google’s half-baked video player. Basic controls only, poor codec support, and trouble even with some DivX/XviD files. The hardware screen was ready for serious media; the software clearly wasn’t.

ICS: The Moment Android Grew Up

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on the Galaxy Nexus wasn’t just a skin change; it rewired how the platform thought about phones.

The lockscreen brought a circular unlock control with two fixed actions: unlock and camera, plus Face Unlock as a very early, very insecure, but very fast biometric option. This wasn’t just a gimmick; it was Google signaling that phones are personal computers with personal identities, not SIM cards with screens.

The real revolution was killing hardware keys. Back, Home, and Recent apps became on-screen buttons anchored to a persistent navigation bar. A cramped Menu icon only appeared for legacy apps that still depended on it. From here on, Android’s navigation paradigm was fluid, software-first, and adaptable to orientation.

The rest of the UI followed this philosophy:
– A persistent Google Search bar locked to the top of all homescreens
– A configurable favorites tray dock at the bottom, including folder support
– A revamped notification shade with contact photos, a quick Settings shortcut, and per-notification swipe-to-dismiss
– Resizable widgets, drag-to-create folders, and a new Roboto typeface across the system

The app drawer split into Apps and Widgets, both side-scrollable, with long-press gestures to place shortcuts and quick access to uninstall or app info. The Recent apps list switched to scrollable thumbnails you could flick away to close.

This wasn’t a minor facelift – this is the DNA you still see, with tweaks, in modern Android.

Performance, Battery, and Gaming: Great Browser, Old GPU, Weak Stamina

Under the hood, the Galaxy Nexus used a TI OMAP 4460: dual Cortex-A9 cores at 1.2GHz and a PowerVR SGX540 GPU. CPU-wise, it sat roughly with the Galaxy S II – sometimes ahead (BenchmarkPi), sometimes behind (Linpack). Nothing wrong with raw CPU; it was the GPU that dated the device.

PowerVR SGX540 was already an old friend from the original Galaxy S era. Pair that with a 720p panel and you’ve got a GPU that has to work hard just to keep up. In NenaMark 2, it scored 24fps – not terrible for the time, but clearly not a performance monster.

3D games still ran, and developers target much slower hardware anyway, but you weren’t buying a spec monster. You were buying a reference device that happened to be good enough for gaming, not a gaming-first flagship.

The browser told a different story. Android 4.0’s browser engine made the Galaxy Nexus the fastest mobile browser benchmark device of its time in JavaScript-heavy tests like SunSpider and BrowserMark – even beating the iPhone 4S. More importantly, that performance uplift came from the software stack, not just the silicon, which meant other ICS devices would benefit, too.

Battery life is where the device absolutely let users down. In combined use, it only managed about 31 hours – one of the lowest sets of numbers tested at the time.
– Talk time: decent at 8 hours 23 minutes
– Video playback: average at just over 6 hours
– Web browsing: bad – just over 3 hours from full charge

So you bought a phone whose biggest strengths were a high-res screen and a super-fast browser, then watched those exact use cases drain the battery brutally. For a “reference” Android, that’s a painful mismatch between vision and practicality.

Camera: 5MP on Paper, Flagship-Grade Output in Practice

On spec sheets, the Galaxy Nexus looked under-armed: a 5MP main camera with LED flash when rivals were pushing 8MP modules. It clearly wasn’t meant to overshadow the Galaxy S II’s imaging.

The camera interface was aggressively functional, if a bit clumsy. You got:
– A big viewfinder, side panel controls, and a three-way mode switch (still, video, panorama)
– Tap-to-focus, face detection, virtual zoom, basic controls for flash, white balance, exposure, and scenes
– Instant shot-to-shot times – you could hammer the shutter and it kept up

The surprise was image quality. Despite its 5MP cap, detail was high, exposure and color rendition were accurate, and noise was well controlled. Synthetic charts showed clean resolution, controlled noise reduction, and neutral color patches.

Video followed the same pattern:
– Rear camera: 1080p at ~10Mbps, 24fps
– Rear camera 720p: ~8Mbps at 30fps, wider field of view
– Front camera: 720p at 30fps, 8Mbps

The 1080p footage held excellent detail and color, though low-light performance dropped off hard and compression could chew into the finer textures. 720p from the front cam was surprisingly usable compared to most front shooters of that era.

ICS layered on some genuinely user-facing features:
– Full-res still captures while recording video
– Time-lapse recording with intervals from 1 to 10 seconds
– Real-time face distortion effects and a “background” green-screen-style effect (fun, but glitchy and low-res at D1/16fps)

Was it the best camera phone you could buy then? No. But the narrative that “5MP = bad camera” simply didn’t hold up here. This was a conscious spec decision, not a lazy one – still a compromise, but not a crippling one for most people.

ICS Apps, Media, and Audio: Great Tools, Weird Limits

Samsung and Google packed the Galaxy Nexus with some actually useful first-party tools, especially for media creators.

The Gallery app was rebuilt around albums, locations, times, people, and tags, with deep integration for online albums like Picasa and offline download options. You could batch-mark online albums to cache over Wi‑Fi and keep them available offline, which is exactly the type of hybrid cloud/local workflow modern services now push.

The built-in image editor went far beyond basic crop and rotate. You got:
– Light adjustments (shadows, highlights)
– Effects and color styles
– Red-eye reduction, straightening, sharpening
– Face glow and intensity sliders for fine control

On the video side, Movie Studio let you:
– Trim multiple clips on a timeline
– Add titles, transitions, and background music
– Export with multiple quality and resolution options

For a stock phone, this removed a lot of the “I need a PC to finish this” excuses. You could actually shoot, edit, and export directly from the device.

Then the video playback story face-plants. There was no proper standalone video app; you went through the Gallery. DivX and XviD support existed but was flakey: some files played, some didn’t, some DivX clips even ran at half speed. No .MKV, no subtitles, and a bare-minimum interface.

On the plus side, MHL over microUSB meant you could output HD video to a TV – assuming you transcoded files or installed a better third-party player. Stock software was blocking hardware potential yet again.

Audio, ironically, was where the Galaxy Nexus over-delivered. The music app used a tabbed UI (Recent, Artists, Albums, Songs, Playlists, Genres) and offered:
– A now playing screen with extended controls
– An equalizer with presets and a custom mode
– Bass boost and 3D effects when headphones were plugged in

In audio testing, the phone came out as one of the loudest and cleanest devices, with virtually excellent output into an external amp and only mild degradation on headphones (some intermodulation distortion and stereo crosstalk rise, but still better than most rivals). For a device that marketed almost nothing about audio, this was quietly one of its strongest technical areas.

Phone, Messaging, Connectivity: Smart UX, Some Annoying Gaps

The phonebook was rebuilt to look more like the then-new Android Market: three tabs (Contacts, Groups, Favorites) with swipe navigation, persistent scroll bar, and quick search. Quick contacts opened as a tabbed popup (phone and email) with side swipes.

Per-contact controls let you:
– Assign custom ringtones
– Edit, share, delete
– Redirect specific contacts straight to voicemail

Contact sources could be filtered by service and group, with contact joining across multiple services. Facebook, even though preinstalled, refused to sync its contacts – a direct result of Google’s long-running policy on how Facebook stored data. That’s not a hardware issue; that’s platform politics spilling into user experience.

The dialer had the clean neon-blue-on-black ICS styling but skipped smart dialing and didn’t allow deleting individual call log entries – only batches. Loudspeaker performance rated Below Average, and call quality dropped when signal weakened, sometimes to the point of breaking up.

Messaging stayed familiar: thread-based SMS/MMS with lockable messages, batch thread delete, and optional auto-pruning (default 500 SMS and 50 MMS per thread). The compose box was still annoyingly small – three lines max on a 4.65″ display is just lazy UI design.

Email was split between a powerful but Gmail-only app (multiple accounts, batch ops, swipe between messages, but no unified inbox) and a generic IMAP/POP client with a combined inbox but fewer gestures.

Connectivity was stacked:
– Quad-band GSM/EDGE, penta-band 3G with HSPA+ (21Mbps down / 5.76Mbps up)
– LTE variant for certain markets (like Verizon’s CDMA/LTE version)
– Dual-band Wi‑Fi b/g/n with Wi‑Fi Direct, hotspot, and DLNA
– Bluetooth 3.0 and NFC
– A-GPS with digital compass and barometer for faster locks

Wi‑Fi reception, however, ran weak under low signal, dragging down speeds. The microUSB port ditched traditional USB mass storage in favor of MTP only, which mostly worked but could hide certain file types (like .ZIP) when you desperately needed to grab them.

The ICS browser delivered desktop-style features: request desktop site, save pages for offline reading, text size controls, inverted rendering for high-contrast dark mode, Chrome-style preloading of likely search results, Incognito tabs, and a Chrome-like tab switcher you could swipe away.

Flash support remained strong, with 1080p YouTube playback and Flash games running fine. Turn on Quick Controls from Labs and you finally got a sane way to access navigation without hunting for the missing Menu key.

Why the Galaxy Nexus Still Matters – and Where It Let Users Down

Strip away the nostalgia and the Galaxy Nexus looks like this:
– A design template for future Android phones: on-screen keys, clean lines, and a big, high-res AMOLED display
– A software milestone where Android finally looked intentional instead of a patchwork of menus and legacy buttons
– A reference browser and UI performance showcase that other ICS phones would inherit

But it also:
– Shipped with mediocre battery life, especially for web – the single thing Android 4.0 made you want to use more
– Dropped expandable storage and a higher-res camera to protect Samsung’s Galaxy S II line
– Came with a half-baked video playback story and some annoying telephony/messaging gaps

Everyone loves to remember it as “the ICS phone,” but the reality is more nuanced. The Galaxy Nexus was a vision device: it solved the OS and UX problems decisively, then exposed how far behind parts of the hardware and app stack still were.

You can argue about whether those trade-offs were worth it, but you can’t pretend this phone didn’t drag Android, kicking and screaming, into its modern UI era.
