Apple Health launched in 2014 and became the central repository for health data on iOS. Fitbit, MyFitnessPal, Strava, and hundreds of other apps fed data into it. Android had no equivalent — health data was siloed in individual apps with no cross-app sharing.

For 14 years, every Android app could send you notifications by default. Install a weather app, and it could spam you with alerts. Install a game, and it could ping you hourly to “claim your reward.” The only way to stop it was to dig through Settings and disable notifications per-app.

Android 11 (2020) did something radical: it declared that messages from people are more important than notifications from apps. The “Conversations” section — a dedicated area at the top of the notification shade — prioritized messaging apps over everything else. Combined with Bubbles (floating chat heads), Android made communication the center of the experience.
