If you’re trying to make sense of where OnePlus is going next, the company just handed you a messy roadmap: an overstuffed OnePlus 15, a value-focused Nord 4, lingering memories of the 7T era, and some China-only AI updates for the 11 and 12.
On paper, this lineup looks strong. In reality, it’s a reminder that OnePlus still loves headline specs more than coherent, globally consistent features.
From 7T Smoothness to Today: What OnePlus Used to Get Right
The long-term look at the OnePlus 7T is a good baseline for judging where the brand stands now.
The 7T’s Snapdragon 855, OxygenOS 10.0.6, and 90Hz Fluid AMOLED display made it feel insanely fast in real-world use. No visible lag, no micro-stutters, and no thermal throttling under heavy loads. It wasn’t just benchmark numbers; the phone actually felt like one of the fastest Android devices at the time.
Battery life, though, was already a warning sign. A 3,800 mAh cell plus a 90Hz panel meant 5–6 hours of screen-on time in a typical 12–16 hour day. Acceptable, but nothing special, and already behind rivals that were pushing bigger batteries.
The camera setup was a highlight for flexibility, not for outright image quality. A 48 MP main, an ultrawide, and a 2x telephoto finally gave OnePlus users the standard three-lens array. Daytime shots had decent dynamic range and color, but details were just “good enough,” with aggressive noise reduction smearing fine textures.
Low light performance was fine but clearly below the best from Huawei, Google, and Apple. Nightscape helped but couldn’t match true class leaders. The story was similar across ultrawide and zoom: usable, but not flagship-leading.
That’s the old OnePlus formula in a nutshell: fantastic speed and smoothness, okay battery life, and a camera that was versatile but not class-best.
OnePlus Nord 4: Strong Specs, Familiar Corners Cut
Fast forward to 2024 and the Nord 4, which is clearly positioned as a premium mid-ranger.
You get a 6.74-inch Fluid AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh, HDR10+, and up to 2,150 nits peak brightness. Resolution is 1240 x 2772 with around 450 ppi, so it’s sharper than the old 1080p era but not chasing meaningless QHD+ numbers.
The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 (4 nm) with an Adreno 732 GPU is paired with up to 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. Storage is UFS 3.1 on the base 128GB model and UFS 4.0 on higher trims, which is a weirdly fragmented approach. You’re punished with slower storage if you go for the cheapest version.
Battery is where OnePlus finally seems to be listening. The Nord 4 packs a 5,500 mAh cell with 100W wired charging (PPS-supported), rated to fully charge in 28 minutes. GSMArena’s test shows an active use score of 14:41 hours, which is a massive improvement over the 7T’s “good enough” endurance.
The camera system, though, screams cost-cutting. Just two rear cameras: a 50 MP main (1/1.95″ sensor, OIS) and an 8 MP ultrawide. No telephoto at all. Video tops out at 4K60 on the rear and 1080p30 on the selfie cam.
For around €394 / £419, the value is decent, but the compromises are predictable: no telephoto, mid-tier camera hardware, no microSD, and USB Type‑C 2.0 instead of 3.x. Stereo speakers are “very good” in loudness tests at -24.6 LUFS, but this isn’t a full flagship experience.
So yes, it’s fast enough, bright enough, and lasts long enough. But OnePlus is still relying on speed and charging to distract from the camera and I/O shortcuts.
OnePlus 15: Huge Battery, Big Numbers, Same Playbook
The OnePlus 15 is the 2025 flagship meant to reset the narrative, and on the spec sheet, it almost does.
The 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display runs at up to 165Hz with 1B colors, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR Vivid, and a 1272 x 2772 resolution at ~450 ppi. Typical brightness is 800 nits with 1,800 nits HBM. Protection is Gorilla Glass Victus 2, with Mohs level 5 hardness listed.
Under the hood, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (3 nm, SM8850-AC) with Oryon V3 cores and an Adreno 840 GPU is paired with up to 16GB RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage. Benchmarks are predictably huge: up to 3.68M in AnTuTu v11 and 11,062 in GeekBench 6, plus 7,370 in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme.
Battery is finally treated like a first-class citizen: a 7,300 mAh Si/C Li-Ion pack with 120W wired charging (UFCS), 55W PPS, 36W PD/QC, 50W wireless, and reverse wireless/wired support. The active use score is 23:07 hours, and the EU label rates endurance at 74:25 hours with 1,100 cycles. That’s a massive leap from the 7T’s middling stamina.
Cameras are all-50 MP: main (1/1.56″, OIS), a 3.5x periscope telephoto (80mm, OIS), and a 116° ultrawide with PDAF. You get 8K30 and 4K up to 120fps, Dolby Vision, and LUT preview. The selfie camera is 32 MP with 4K60 video.
Connectivity ticks all modern boxes: Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 with aptX HD and LHDC 5, NFC, IR blaster, and USB Type‑C 3.2. There’s an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor and IP68/IP69K rating, with high-pressure water resistance.
So what’s the problem? OnePlus is still playing the same game: overbuild the spec sheet, but say nothing about addressing the known weaknesses exposed by phones like the 7T. The source data gives great stats for performance, display brightness (1,364 nits measured), loudness (-24.8 LUFS), and battery life. But nothing on real-world camera consistency, software stability, or overheating behavior.
If you remember how the 7T looked great on paper but fell short in low light camera performance, you’ve seen this movie before. The 15 might be a genuine all-day-plus brute with a flagship camera, or it might just be another “numbers first” iteration. The specs alone don’t answer that.
OnePlus 11 & 12: AI Features, Limited Reach
While the hardware story marches on, OnePlus is quietly testing its software future in China.
The OnePlus 11’s new firmware (PHB110_14.0.0.403(CN01)) and the OnePlus 12’s update (PJD110_14.0.0.405(CN01)) add several AI-driven tools: AI Summariser, AIGC Remover, and Article Summaries. These slot alongside upgrades to Breeno Touch.
The updates also introduce a new “Device motion & orientation” permission in Settings, and they finally let you unlock the phone with the fingerprint scanner without waking the screen first. You can control QQ Music from the Always-On Display and choose how screen recording indicators show (status bar or floating window).
For the OnePlus 12 specifically, the update also claims better Bluetooth, NFC, and WLAN stability and compatibility, plus a fix for network signals in subway-like environments.
All of that sounds useful, but there’s a catch: these are Chinese firmware builds. There’s no mention of timing or parity for global OxygenOS devices. So AI Summariser and AIGC Remover might shape the future of OnePlus’ software, but right now they’re regional experiments.
Once again, OnePlus is fragmenting the experience. Hardware is sold globally, but key software features and fixes roll out selectively.
OnePlus in 2025: Bigger Batteries, Bigger Specs, Same Blind Spots
If you line up the 7T, Nord 4, and OnePlus 15 plus the AI-updated 11 and 12, a pattern emerges.
OnePlus has finally fixed some of the obvious hardware complaints: tiny batteries are gone, charging is even faster, screens are brighter and smoother, and storage is faster on higher trims. The 15’s 7,300 mAh cell and the Nord 4’s 5,500 mAh pack are a clear response to years of criticism.
But the brand still leans heavily on spec sheet shock value instead of proving real-world gains. The 7T showed how OnePlus nails performance and smoothness but sits behind in camera and battery leadership. The Nord 4 repeats that trade-off in mid-range form. The 15 escalates everything but leaves the real questions unanswered.
Meanwhile, AI features land first in China with no clear global roadmap, and some of the basics—like storage tier segmentation and USB 2.0 on a 2024 mid-ranger—feel like deliberate cost decisions, not consumer-focused ones.
If you’re a power user, the message is mixed: OnePlus is absolutely capable of elite hardware, but it’s still not clear if it’s willing to deliver a truly balanced flagship experience worldwide.
